Malignant melanoma, originating from pigment cells, is a highly aggressive tumour affecting patients of any age group. Its incidence is rapidly growing. The most common form can be easily diagnosed by any physician. There are some well-known genetic (skin-, eye-, hair colour, naevi, melanoma in the personal/family history) and environmental (ultraviolet radiation) predisposing factors. Treatment is based on early diagnosis and excision. When metastasis occurs, the traditional chemo- and radiotherapy gives a low response rate. Recently some newly approved targeted therapies and immunomodulant d

Epidermoid inclusion cysts are common lesions with unclear etiology. We sought to examine evidence for human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and ultraviolet light (UV) exposure as risk factors in the formation of epidermoid inclusion cysts. We performed HPV typing of biopsied cysts with polymerase chain reaction for a patient with darkly-pigmented skin, epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV) and more than 250 photodistributed cysts. HPV types 8 and 6 DNA was demonstrated within biopsy specimens of 3 cysts. In one biopsy specimen, abnormal keratinocytes bridging the follicular infundibulum were se

Parasites, especially Sarcoptes scabiei, may represent a difficult diagnostic problem. In many cases, the results of the usual methods for the diagnosis of scabies, such as microscopic identification, can be negative owing to the small number of parasites present in the cornified layer. Moreover, tape stripping or removal of mites with a needle is difficult and sometimes painful, and therefore, not well accepted. We have evaluated the applicability and usefulness of epiluminescence microscopy, a new technique frequently used for the study of pigmented lesions of the skin. Thirty seven patients

Sixty cases of stable and refractory depigmented skin conditions which include local vitiligo, segmental vitiligo, chemical leucoderma, vitiligo vulgaris, post-burn depigmentation etc constitute the study group. 39 of them were female and 21 male. Age ranged between 6 and 67 years. 1057 grafts were placed over 114 lesions and the cases were followed up to a period of 18 months. 70% to 100% repigmentation was observed in 56 lesions of 31 patients. Rate and extent of perigraft pigment spread was noted. Patients under PUVASOL showed a distinctly better response. Sequelae like cobble-stoning and p

Chromoblastomycosis and mycetoma are chronic infections caused by the repeated traumatic inoculation of organisms into the skin and subcutaneous tissue. Chromoblastomycosis is caused by several dematiaceous (pigmented) fungi, occurs in tropical regions, and usually affects the lower extremities. The lesions may be nodules, plaques, or tumorous masses. Mycetomas are caused by either true fungi (eumycetes) or filamentous bacteria (actinomycetes); they also occur predominantly in tropical areas and most frequently affect the foot or leg. Typically there is a firm swelling with multiple sinus trac

Two familial cases of acrodermatitis enteropathica began at the time of weaning, with characteristic dermatologic lesions and digestive signs, resulting in lack of weight gain: at 13 months of age growth future was evident in the elder child. The anatomic lesions were those of an exophagitis and, in the duodenal mucosa, a dilation of the capillaries of the chorion in the absence of villous atrophy. The ultrastructural study showed inclusions in Paneth's cells, and changes in keratin cells, with intra-cytoplasmic vacuoles and abnormal melanin pigment in the skin. The administration of zinc sulp

Reproductive hormonal factors may have a potential role in cutaneous melanoma. This study estimated the risk of melanoma in women related to self-reported changes in nevi during pregnancy, while using oral contraceptives and/or hormone replacement therapy. Trained interviewers administered a questionnaire obtaining information about oral contraceptive use, hormone replacement therapy, reproductive history, sun exposure, occupation, and medical history from 318 Caucasian women newly diagnosed between 1991 and 1992 from two pigmented lesion clinics in San Francisco, California, and Philadelphia,

Introduction: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently diagnosed skin cancer globally. Despite the well-established dermoscopic features of BCC, overlapping characteristics with other benign and malignant skin conditions cause challenges in differential diagnosis. Part III of this review highlights the role of dermoscopy in differential diagnosis, treatment planning, therapy monitoring and the integration of novel technologies including ultraviolet-induced fluorescence dermoscopy (UVFD) and optical super-high magnification dermoscopy (OSHMD). Methods: A search of the PubMed database w

BACKGROUND: Nevus of Ota is a benign bluish or gray-brown lesion of the eye and the surrounding skin that has been reported to occur in about 1 in 200 people in Japan. Prior treatments have either been ineffective or caused scarring. The Q-switched ruby laser can produce very short high-energy pulses and can selectively target cells that contain pigment, such as dermal melanocytes.
METHODS: We treated the skin lesions of 114 patients (25 male and 89 female) with nevi of Ota with a Q-switched ruby laser set to deliver pulses of 6 J per square centimeter of body-surface area at a wavelength of

Recently virologists and clinicians have focused attention on infections with human papillomaviruses (HPV). This is due to the ubiquity, the increasing frequency and the possible association of these viruses with the development of squamous cell carcinomas of the skin and of the mucous membranes of the respiratory, gastrointestinal, genitourinary and anorectal tracts. HPV represent a very heterogeneous group of DNA tumor viruses. By means of molecular-biological techniques, more than 40 HPV types have been recognized. In the urogenital and anal tract, papillomaviruses have been associated with

Sensitive skin has been described as a skin type showing higher reactivity than normal skin and developing exaggerated reactions when exposed to external factors. The stinging test, performed by applying lactic acid to the nasolabial fold and evaluating the intensity of subjective symptoms, is widely accepted as a marker of sensitivity and employed for the selection of subjects experiencing invisible cutaneous irritation. However, this test is based on self-perceived assessment and lacks objectivity. In order to contribute to the finding of objective descriptors, we assessed baseline biophysic

The color of urine, once considered by uroscopists to give the most important clues to the diagnosis, still can provide some diagnostic clues in modern medicine. Pigmented cells are an uncommon and surprising find in urine cytology and can at the same time provide important diagnostic clues or represent a dangerous pitfall. We present a review of the significance of pigmented cells in urine cytology. The presence of intracellular pigment granules; their color, size, shape, and variation in size and shape; as well as their staining reactions with special stains can provide useful diagnostic ins

A case of xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) group D in a 39-year-old Japanese man is reported. The patient had suffered from moderate to severe solar sensitivity and freckle-like pigmented macules in sun-exposed areas since 6 years of age, and developed skin malignancies such as squamous cell carcinoma, actinic keratosis, Bowen's disease and basal cell carcinoma. The minimal erythema dose for ultraviolet (UV) radiation was decreased with a delayed peak reaction. The level of unscheduled DNA synthesis of fibroblasts from the patient was 70% of normal, while they expressed POLH, a gene product responsi

Malignant melanoma is the most aggressive form of skin cancer showing extremely high metastatic rate and leading to high levels of lethality. The continually growing incidence of malignant melanoma in the world and his difficult early diagnosis are the occasion for numerous studies. The individual risk for malignant transformation of melanocytes is determined by a number of etiologic factors--endogenous and exogenous. Ultraviolet radiation has a leading role in the group of exogenous factors. Within the group of endogenous factors, besides the well-known photo type skin, as well as genes mutat

Lichen planus is a common papulosquamous disorder affecting about 1-2% of the population, neoplastic transformation of cutaneous lichen planus lesions occurs very rarely. A 40 year old female patient presented with a 1 year history of developing multiple, itchy, pigmented lesions over both lower legs which gradually spread to involve the whole body. A few tense bullae were seen on the extremities. An erythematous fleshy lesion was seen on the upper aspect of the left buttock. Skin biopsy from a plaque on the right forearm showed features suggestive of lichen planus. Skin biopsy of a bullae sho

We report the case of a woman who presented with several facial scars following a road accident. Treatment was carried out using combined laser treatment with pulsed dye laser (PDL) and the Q-switched neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser (QS Nd:YAG laser). No side effects or complications from treatment were noted or reported. The patient had very good cosmetic results with this combined technique. A variety of facial scars--erythematous, pigmented, atrophic and hypertrophic--may occur as a result of trauma, surgery, burns and skin disease. Surgery with other adjunctive methods including ra

A 10-year-old Kenyan girl presented with a 9-month history of a persistent, painful eruption of multiple, tender, non-ulcerated, pigmented nodules involving the calves, shins and soles of the feet. She had recurring fevers particularly at night, lethargy, weight loss and a persistent non-productive cough. The Mantoux test was positive. Chest X-ray revealed mild peribronchial thickening in the hilar region but no evidence of hilar lymphadenopathy, consolidation and/or cavitation suggestive of tuberculosis. Sputum and gastric washings were negative for acid-fast bacilli. Histology on a skin biop
