Droplets of black bile? Development of vulnerability and resilience to depression in young age.

Major depressive disorder is predicted by enduring anxiety-related personality traits, in particular by neuroticism, which have genetic foundations. Neuroticism in turn is strongly related with the genetic risk for depression. Search for gene variants associated with neuroticism and depression has led to some good candidates, but the consistency of findings is very far from ideal. Adverse life events are causal to development of mood disorders, and often the vulnerability genes can be detected only when environmental impact has been objectively assessed. Yet the continuity of depression diagno

Effects of yoga on impulsivity in patients with and without mental disorders: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Yoga can be used as a complementary intervention to conventional treatments, whether pharmacological or non-pharmacological. Sustained practice of yoga can generate a series of benefits for individuals' quality of life and improve their physical fitness. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the potential effects of yoga as an adjunct intervention in conditions involving impulse control issues, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), borderline personality disorder, bipolar affective disorder, and substance use disorders. METHODS: We performed a systematic review of placebo-

The factor structure of the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI) for psychiatric inpatients.

This study examines the factor structure of the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI) for a sample of psychiatric inpatients. The results are compared and contrasted with previous studies that have examined the factor structure of the MCMI. Factors identified for the inpatient sample include Interpersonal Withdrawal/Avoidance, Emotional Distress, Impulsivity/Negativism, Paranoid Distrust/Delusions, and Dependency/Submission. In general, results from this study are consistent with previous findings. However, there is evidence that the factor structure for this inpatient sample demonstrate

Substance-Induced Psychiatric Disorders, Epigenetic and Microbiome Alterations, and Potential for Therapeutic Interventions.

Substance use disorders (SUDs) are complex biopsychosocial diseases that cause neurocognitive deficits and neurological impairments by altering the gene expression in reward-related brain areas. Repeated drug use gives rise to alterations in DNA methylation, histone modifications, and the expression of microRNAs in several brain areas that may be associated with the development of psychotic symptoms. The first section of this review discusses how substance use contributes to the development of psychotic symptoms via epigenetic alterations. Then, we present more evidence about the link between

Impaired olfactory function in substance use disorder.

RATIONALE: The sense of smell plays a key role in guiding motivated behavior, and olfactory function is impaired in clinical populations with dysfunctional approach-avoidance behavior, including major depressive and alcohol use disorder (AUD). However, whether olfactory impairments are also observed in individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs) other than AUD is currently unknown. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between olfactory function and SUDs. METHODS: We tested olfaction in 40 individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs) other than AUD using the Sniffi

Examining the relationship of concurrent obesity and tobacco use disorder on the development of substance use disorders and psychiatric conditions: Findings from the NESARC-III.

BACKGROUND: Multimorbidity is linked to worse health outcomes than single health conditions. However, recent studies show that obesity may reduce the risk of developing substance use disorders (SUDs), particularly in vulnerable populations. We investigated how comorbid obesity and tobacco use disorder (TUD) relate to the risk of SUDs and psychiatric conditions. METHODS: Data was used from 36,309 individuals who completed the National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions - Wave III. Individuals who met the DSM-5 criteria for TUD in the last year were defined as the TUD grou

Substance and Alcohol Misuse, Drug Pathways, and Offending Behaviors in Association With ADHD in Prison Inmates.

Objective: The objective of the study is to quantify the extent of specific polysubstance use, drug transitions to current substances, and describe the association with alcohol use disorders among inmates with ADHD. We also examined health risk behaviors and patterns of offending in relation with ADHD. Method: A total of 387 male British prison inmates were screened and interviewed via the Diagnostic Interview for ADHD in Adults 2.0 (DIVA-2). Results: Male prisoners with ADHD endorse more methadone and amphetamine use. There was a significantly higher linear trend among those with ADHD for the

[Online-gambling - new hazard potential?].

Since the new American psychiatric classification, DSM V, was released, bringing together substance-related disorders and gambling disorder into one chapter, the addictive potential of gambling and sports wagering is beyond all question. Even the neurobiological processes of the brain show similarities in all addictive disorders. Gambling is more and more shifted into the cyberspace owing to the global expansion of the internet. The addictive potential of online-gambling seems to be higher than offline, though, which is also reflected by the patient population of the outpatient clinic for gamb…

Deficiency of the autologous mixed lymphocyte reaction in patients with autoimmune thyroid disease.

The proliferative response of T lymphocytes when cocultured with autologous non-T cells in the absence of any other stimulating substance has been termed the autologous mixed lymphocyte reaction (AMLR). The AMLR has been shown to be impaired in several autoimmune disorders, such as systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjögren's syndrome, and primary biliary cirrhosis. In this study we report marked deficiency in the AMLR in two autoimmune disorders: Hashimoto's and Graves' diseases. This impaired AMLR, probably related to previously described T cell subset imbalances, provides further evidence of alt

Mummy, daddy, and addiction: Implicit insecure attachment is associated with substance use in college students.

Indirect measures of cognition have become an important tool in research on addiction. To date, however, no research has examined whether indirect measures of parent attachment relate to substance use. To examine this issue, a sample of college students (N = 121) was asked to complete two measures of explicit attachment (the Relationship Questionnaire; Bartholomew & Horowitz, 1991, and the Adult Attachment Styles; Collins & Read, 1990), and a measure of implicit attachment (the Single Category Implicit Association Test, Karpinski & Steinman, 2006). The indirect attachment measure assessed the

Testing a social-cognitive model of intimate abusiveness among substance-dependent males.

Throughout history, the human race has been characterized by the use of physical and emotional aggression by individuals, particularly males, in their intimate relationships. Intimate abusiveness is particularly common among substance-dependent males. As a result of male intimate abusiveness, victims suffer a variety of problems, ranging from emotional trauma to death due to physical injury. Despite increased attention to this problem, our understanding of the process leading to intimate abusiveness is far from comprehensive. The primary purpose of the present study was to expand our understan

Self-reported PTSD is associated with increased use of MDMA in adolescents with substance use disorders.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent patients with a substance use disorder (SUD) often fulfil the criteria for a co-occurring post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, it is not clear if these dual-diagnosed adolescents present with unique levels of substance use and how their substance use relates to PTSD symptom clusters. OBJECTIVE: To investigate substance use in adolescents with co-occurring PTSD and SUD. Additionally, we explored how the use of specific substances is related to specific PTSD symptom clusters. METHOD: We recruited n = 121 German adolescent SUD patients, in three groups: no hist

A comparison of male and female cocaine abusers.

Little has been written about the differences between male and female cocaine abusers. We therefore compared sociodemographic characteristics, reasons for cocaine use, drug effects, depressive symptoms, and psychiatric diagnoses in 95 men and 34 women hospitalized for cocaine abuse. Men were more likely to be employed, to hold higher status jobs, and to be self-supporting. Women were more likely to cite specific reasons for drug use, while men tended to use cocaine as part of a larger pattern of antisocial behavior. Women were diagnosed more often as having major depression, and their depressi

An Exploratory Study of Overlapping Stigmas and Substance Use Stigma Among Women with Substance Use Histories Who are Incarcerated.

Despite the overwhelmingly negative impacts of substance use stigma, little is known about how multiple, overlapping stigmatized identities, experiences, or characteristics (henceforth stigmas) may be related to perceived substance use stigma, especially in a sample of women who are incarcerated. The current study profiled stigmas reported by women in jail with substance use histories and investigated the relationship between the number of overlapping stigmas reported and perceptions of substance use stigma. Exploratory analyses examined the relationship between each individual stigma and subs

Emotion regulation facets prospectively distinguish food addiction from substance misuse in women with binge eating, gambling, or both behaviours.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the degree of similarity between food addiction (FA) and substance addictions (SA), we prospectively compared emotion regulation deficits associated with FA and alcohol or drug misuse in women with binge eating, gambling, or both behaviours. METHOD: Participants were 202 community-recruited women who engaged in at-risk binge eating (39 %), at-risk gambling (18 %), or both (43 %). Participants completed online assessments every two months for six months. The baseline and six-month surveys assessed self-reported emotion regulation using the Difficulties in Emotion Regula

Effects of psychiatric care for dual diagnosis patients treated in a drug dependence clinic.

This study examines outcome of treatment for psychoactive substance dependence in a clinic which made psychiatric care readily available. Veterans entering outpatient treatment for substance dependence (n = 222) received psychiatric evaluation for additional Axis I disorders using DSM-III-R criteria. Patients provided urine toxicology specimens at least weekly. Outcome (urinalysis results and treatment retention) was compared for patients with dual diagnosis (n = 103, 46.4%) and with substance only diagnosis (n = 119, 53.6%). Psychotropic medications were prescribed for 80.4% of the dual diagn

Gender and ethnicity in first admissions to a psychiatric unit in Trinidad.

It has been recognized that there are gender disparities in the admission rates to psychiatric units. While the community prevalence of the major non-organic psychotic mental disorders are thought to have no gender bias, non-psychotic disorders such as depression are more commonly diagnosed in women. Gender differences in admission may indicate differences in severity or in presentation to psychiatric services and would have important implications for the targeting of preventative strategies. The case notes of all admissions to the psychiatric unit at the San Fernando General Hospital were obt

[Pharmacological treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder].

In addition to trauma-focussed psychotherapy, pharmacological treatment is often unavoidable, especially in patients with severe posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). As long as comorbid disorders do not dictate the pharmacotherapy approach, sertraline and paroxetine, along with other off-label prescribable substances approved in Germany, can be used for the treatment of PTSD. Venlafaxine, in particular, has shown good effectiveness in studies, whereas risperidone has shown lower effectiveness in augmentation. Overall, only a small to medium effect size is to be expected for all substances. Ps

Mental health outcome of unilateral lower limb amputee soldiers in two districts of Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: Thousands of armed forces personnel in Sri Lanka have undergone lower limb amputations due to war injuries. AIMS: The aims were to describe the mental health outcome of unilateral lower limb amputee male soldiers of the Sri Lanka Army in comparison with nonamputee males and to identify factors affecting the mental health outcome. METHODOLOGY: Selected amputee soldiers (n = 461) and controls (n = 461) were evaluated for psychological distress using self-administered versions of GHQ-30 and BSI. Alcohol and drug consumption patterns were compared. Probable addiction to alcohol and d
