Brain structure and function differences across varying levels of endurance training: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Although previous studies have shown that athletes engaged in endurance sports exhibit unique characteristics of brain plasticit … es exhibited significantly greater GMV in the left parahippocampal gyrus, bilateral thalamus, right temporal lobe, and bilateral cerebellum compared to both moderate-level endurance athletes and controls. The GMV in these regions showed an increasing trend with more years of endurance training and higher endurance capacity. Additionally, these athletes had sign …

Magnetic resonance imaging findings and clinical characteristics in mild malformation of cortical development with oligodendroglial hyperplasia and epilepsy in a predominantly adult cohort.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to better characterize the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of mild malformation of cortical development with o … bnormalities in all cases. The lesion was circumscribed in the frontal lobe in six (50%) and in the temporal lobe in three (25%) patients. In the remaining three patients (25%), the lesion was multilobar (frontotemporal and temporoparieto-occipital). Cortical thickening was mild in all patients, except in the 4.5-year-old patient, who had pronounced cortical th …

The Establishment of Pseudorandom Ecological Microexpression Recognition Test (PREMERT) and Its Relevant Resting-State Brain Activity.

The EMERT (ecological microexpression recognition test) by Zhang et al. (2017) used between-subjects Latin square block design for backgroun … ippocampus, amygdala, fusiform gyrus, parietal lobe, caudate nucleus, precuneus, thalamus, putamen, temporal lobe, and cerebellum. (3) ALFFs in both eyes-closed and eyes-open resting states and ALFF difference could predict microexpression SD, and the ALFF difference was more predictive. The relevant resting-state brain areas of microexpression SD were some fro …

Pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis presenting with pneumothorax.

A 47-year-old woman presented with spontaneous right side pneumothorax. Image studies showed consolidations and reticular opacities involving the pleural and subpleural regions of bilateral lungs. Wedge biopsy specimens of right upper, middle and lower lobes showed fibrosis of the visceral pleura and subpleural area in all three lobes, more significant in the upper lobe. Elastic Van Gieson stain showed a pattern of alveolar septal elastosis with intra-alveolar fibrosis. The clinical presentation and pathological findings are compatible with pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis, a rare and distinct

Intracranial recordings for non-lesional mesiotemporal epilepsy? Almost always, but not quite always.

•The majority of patients with non-lesional mesial TLE needs intracranial recordings.•This rule should not be rigid and there are some exceptions. Decisions should be individualized.•For bilateral mesial temporal lobe epilepsy, chronic ECoG with RNS may be preferable over "traditional" short-term intracranial recording.

Altered Brain Function in First-Episode and Recurrent Depression: A Resting-State Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study.

BACKGROUND: Studies on differences in brain function activity between the first depressive episode (FDE) and recurrent depressive episodes (RDE) are scarce. In this study, we used regional homogeneity (ReHo) and amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) as indices of abnormal brain function activity. We aimed to determine the differences in these indices between patients with FDE and those with RDE, and to investigate the correlation between areas of abnormal brain function and clinical symptoms. METHODS: A total of 29 patients with RDE, 28 patients with FDE, and 29 healthy controls (HCs

Morphological substrate of face matching in healthy ageing and mild cognitive impairment: a combined MRI-fMRI study.

Functional MRI during face matching shows activation of the ventral visual stream, including the ventral temporal lobes and fusiform gyrus. In contrast, a location-matching task activates the dorsal visual stream, compromising parietal lobe areas. The morphological basis of the functional coupling between brain regions may be related to the distribution of neuron numbers and neuropil density, but has not yet been demonstrated in the living human brain. Regional neuron density can indirectly be assessed in vivo using structural MRI. The progression of Alzheimer's disease pathology along specifi…

[Clinico-pathological investigation of two patients with dementia with motor neuron disease].

Dementia with motor neuron disease (D-MND) is characterized clinically by frontal and neurological signs, and pathologically by localized atrophy of the fronto-temporal lobes and neuronal ubiquitin(Ub)-positive inclusions. In this study, we compared the clinico-pathological findings of two patients with D-MND. Case 1 (55-year-old male): At the age of 51, he developed personality change and disinhibition, lacking neurological signs. Brain MRI exhibited localized atrophy of the frontal lobes. At the age of 54, he showed dysphagia and died after a disease duration of 4 years. Neuropathologically,…

Proprioceptive Stimuli as a Trigger for Leucine-Rich Glioma-Inactivated-1 (LGI1) IgG Associated Autoimmune Seizures, a Case Report.

Leucine-rich glioma-inactivated-1 (LGI1) IgG-associated autoimmune encephalitis typically presents with faciobrachial dystonic seizures, hyponatremia, and temporal lobe MRI abnormalities. However, the clinical spectrum of LGI1 IgG-associated AE extends beyond these classical features, with reports of diverse seizure semiologies and atypical presentations challenging traditional diagnostic paradigms. This study reports a male in his late 60s presenting with recurrent episodes of right foot cramping and electric shock-like pain, progressing to generalized tonic-clonic seizures. Initial workup su…

GABA-dependent microglial elimination of inhibitory synapses underlies neuronal hyperexcitability in epilepsy.

Neuronal hyperexcitability is a common pathophysiological feature of many neurological diseases. Neuron-glia interactions underlie this proc … Additionally, putative cell-cell interaction analyses of brain tissues from males and females with temporal lobe epilepsy reveal that inhibitory neurons induce microglial phagocytic states and inhibitory synapse loss. Our findings demonstrate that inhibitory neurons can directly instruct microglial states to control inhibitory synaptic transmission through a f …

Causal correlation between seizure activity and brain damage.

INTRODUCTION: The correlation between seizure activity and brain damage represents one of the critical issue in epilepsy. In spite of the extensive literature on the topic, very few studies addressed the causal relation between brain tissue worsening and seizure recurrence. We specifically address this issue in the present manuscript. We define potential scenarios and review evidence of causality between seizures recurrence and brain injury in focal structural epilepsies, such as temporal lobe epilepsy and focal cortical dysplasia and extend the analysis to the pathophysiology of the aging bra…

Multisensory Flicker Modulates Widespread Brain Networks and Reduces Interictal Epileptiform Discharges in Humans.

Modulating brain oscillations has strong therapeutic potential. However, commonly used non-invasive interventions such as transcranial magnetic or direct current stimulation have limited effects on deeper cortical structures like the medial temporal lobe. Repetitive audio-visual stimulation, or sensory flicker, modulates such structures in mice but little is known about its effects in humans. Using high spatiotemporal resolution, we mapped and quantified the neurophysiological effects of sensory flicker in human subjects undergoing presurgical intracranial seizure monitoring. We found that fli…

Scene memory and hippocampal volume in middle-aged women with early hormone loss.

The present study explored whether early midlife bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (BSO), a female-specific risk factor for dementia, is associated with reduced medial temporal lobe structure and function. Younger middle-aged women with the BRCA1/2 mutation and a BSO prior to spontaneous menopause (SM) were recruited. We determined the performance of women with BSO not taking estradiol-based hormone therapy (n = 18) on a task measuring object and scene recognition and quantified medial temporal lobe subregion volumes using manually segmented high-resolution T2-weighted MRI scans. Comparisons wer…

Isolated temporal infarct due traumatic vertebral artery dissecting pseudo-aneurysm: a rare case report.

The authors describe a rare case of traumatic vertebral artery dissecting pseudo-aneurysm with temporal lobe infarct in the pre-foramina segment of the left vertebral artery following knife injury of the left anterolateral neck area. A 40 years old man was admitted to the emergency department after a penetrating injury in the left anterolateral neck. On contrast-enhanced CT and Doppler ultrasonography in the neck, a dissecting pseudo-aneurysm of the vertebral artery was revealed. On day 2, MRI scanning revealed an ischemic infarct in the temporal lobe, which can be attributed to vertebral arte…

Trigeminal Numbness After Intracranial Repair of a Spontaneous Meningoencephalocele of the Lateral Wall of the Sphenoid Sinus.

A 58-year-old female with an eight-year history of rhinorrhea and a two-day history of subjective fever, chills, and vomiting presented to the emergency department for neurosurgical evaluation. Brain MRI demonstrated herniation of the meninges and portions of the inferomedial right temporal lobe through a defect of the lateral wall of the right sphenoid sinus, extending to the sphenoethmoidal recess and posterior right ethmoid air cells. A right pterional craniotomy was performed where the herniated part of the right temporal lobe, and its associated meninges, were excised. After surgery, she …

Theta-phase dependent neuronal coding during sequence learning in human single neurons.

The ability to maintain a sequence of items in memory is a fundamental cognitive function. In the rodent hippocampus, the representation of sequentially organized spatial locations is reflected by the phase of action potentials relative to the theta oscillation (phase precession). We investigated whether the timing of neuronal activity relative to the theta brain oscillation also reflects sequence order in the medial temporal lobe of humans. We used a task in which human participants learned a fixed sequence of pictures and recorded single neuron and local field potential activity with implant…

[Accuracy of VSRAD Analysis Using Scout Images: Comparison with Conventional 3D-T1WI].

The voxel-based specific regional analysis system for Alzheimer's disease (VSRAD), which targets volume loss in medial temporal lobe, was developed as a sensitive diagnostic tool to detect early stages of Alzheimer's disease. However, conventional three-dimensional T1 -weighted image (3D-T1WI) for VSRAD analysis acquires relatively long acquisition time. Recently, it became possible to acquire Scout images (Scout) for positioning as a 3D image in a short time. The aim of this study was to determine whether Scout was reliable in VSRAD. We measured voxel-based analysis of gray matter volume usin…
