Maxillary molar distalization using conventional versus skeletal anchorage devices: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to systematically review the evidence regarding conventional versus skeletal anchorage devices for molar distalization. METHOD: An electronic search was conducted. Hand searching was done in the reference lists of included studies and some journals. Studies comparing conventional and skeletal anchorage for molar distalization in Angle class I or II malocclusions were assessed. Presence of periodontal disease, second or third molar extraction and application of tooth accelerating methods led to exclusion of studies. Generic-inverse variance approach

The preventive and therapeutic application of garlic and other plant ingredients in the treatment of periodontal diseases.

Since ancient times, pharmacologically active ingredients derived from natural sources, including plants and microbials have been used in th … in the destruction of gingival connective tissue and in the resorption of alveolar bone, leading to tooth loss. There are a number of clinical reports showing the effectiveness of both herbal extracts and polyphenols on periodontal diseases when applied as a mouthwash or dentifrice into the oral cavity. However, to date, at least to the best of our knowledge …

Metformin facilitates the proliferation, migration, and osteogenic differentiation of periodontal ligament stem cells in vitro.

Periodontitis is one of the main causes of tooth loss and has been confirmed as the sixth complication of diabetes. Metformin promotes the osteogenic differentiation of stem cells. Periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) are the best candidate stem cells for periodontal tissue regeneration. Herein, we aimed to identify the effects of metformin on the proliferation, migration, and osteogenic differentiation of PDLSCs in vitro. PDLSCs were isolated by limiting dilution, and their characteristics were assessed by colony formation assay and flow cytometry. Cell counting and migration assays were …

Antagonistic interactions between osterix and pyrophosphate during cementum formation.

During cementum formation, the key roles of osterix (Osx) and inorganic pyrophosphate (PPi), mainly controlled by nucleotide pyrophosphatase 1 (Npp1; encoded by the Enpp1 gene) and progressive ankylosis protein (Ank), have been demonstrated by animal models displaying altered cementum formation. In this study, we analyzed the relationship of Osx and local PPi during cementum formation using compound mutant mice with their wildtype and corresponding single gene mutants. Importantly, functional defects in PPi regulation led to the induction of Osx expression at the cervical cementum as demonstra

Oral declines and mastication deficiencies cause alteration of food bolus properties.

In the elderly, masticatory function often presents failure in certain oral tasks due to impairment such as decline in muscular force, jaw or tongue motility, neuro-muscular coordination, tooth damage, malocclusion and saliva production. Great disparity is observed in the various and potentially cumulative oral declines that occur with ageing. Such difficulties may have an impact on food consumption and nutritional status. To obtain better understanding of the consequences of several oral deficiencies, a series of swallowable boluses were prepared in vitro with the AM2 masticator apparatus wit

Anti-inflammatory effect of ATB-352, a H2S -releasing ketoprofen derivative, on lipopolysaccharide-induced periodontitis in rats.

Periodontal disease is the most common cause of tooth loss in humans, is an inflammatory disease initiated by oral microbial biofilm. Given the involvement of the inflammatory pathway in this type of pathology, the main pharmacological strategy for the treatment of periodontitis, is the inhibition of the inflammatory process in order to prevent tissue destruction and bone resorption, a condition associated with a painful state. To do this, the best class of drugs are Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), however, the presence of side effects, especially at the gastrointestinal tract,…

The extent of pyroptosis varies in different stages of apical periodontitis.

Apical periodontitis (AP) is an inflammation affecting the periapical region of tooth root. Microbial pathogens activate inflammasomes and promote the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Caspase-1-mediated pyroptosis is a possible mechanism involved in the initiation and progression of AP. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of caspase-1 and pyroptosis on AP at different stages. Human periapical inflammatory tissue was collected to study chronic AP stage. Human periodontal ligament fibroblasts (hPDLFs) were stimulated with lipopolysaccharide in vitro for 24h to simulate ea

Bioprinting-Based PDLSC-ECM Screening for in Vivo Repair of Alveolar Bone Defect Using Cell-Laden, Injectable and Photocrosslinkable Hydrogels.

Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease worldwide that may result in periodontal defect (especially alveolar bone defect) and even tooth loss. Stem-cell-based approach combined with injectable hydrogels has been proposed as a promising strategy in periodontal treatments. Stem cells fate closely depends on their extracellular matrix (ECM) characteristics. Hence, it is necessary to engineer an appropriate injectable hydrogel to deliver stem cells into the defect while serving as the ECM during healing. Therefore, stem cell-ECM interaction should be studied for better stem cell transplantation. …

Saving the 2(nd) Molar from the 3(rd) Is it Really the Guilt of the Tilt?

INTRODUCTION: Clinicians often relate the distal caries in second molars to angulated third molars, which if left undetected can lead to gross decay that may further require removal of the tooth. Due to this fact, many third molars are advised for prophylactic removal to prevent decay in the second molar. But this approach would only be justified when the incidence of decay/loss of second molar due to third molar are reasonably high. We sought to determine incidence of caries experience and also sequel extraction in second molars associated with the third molars. AIM: The study was conducted

Interaction of spirochetes with the host fibrinolytic system and potential roles in pathogenesis.

The pathogenic spirochetes Borrelia burgdorferi, B. hermsii, B. recurrentis, Treponema denticola and Leptospira spp. are the etiologic agents of Lyme disease, relapsing fever, periodontitis and leptospirosis, respectively. Lyme borreliosis is a multi-systemic disorder and the most prevalent tick-borne disease in the northern hemisphere. Tick-borne relapsing fever is persistent in endemic areas worldwide, representing a significant burden in some African regions. Periodontal disease, a chronic inflammatory disorder that often leads to tooth loss, is caused by several potential pathogens found i…
