Interactions between hearing aid and patient in the individual fitting situation.

Due to individual variations in the auricle, meatus, middle ear, and the ear mould, identical hearing aids will yield different insertion gain in different ears. The present experiment was performed in order to introduce an adjusting factor for the individual ear mould-supplied patient compared with KEMAR data as a basis for the selection and fitting of the hearing aid. For different hearing aids tested on the same person the variation in the insertion gain compared with KEMAR data was, however, of such an extent that such a factor cannot be immediately introduced. The variation reflects diffe

Pleasantness in Eventfulness? Bayesian circumplex assessment for ISO soundscape prediction modelsa).

Many studies on predictability of soundscape perception apply the ISO/TS 12913-3 circumplex to derive Pleasantness and Eventfulness scores as targets in statistical models. The standard assumes a fixed geometry; its validation within prediction pipelines, however, remains uncommon. Therefore, a Bayesian framework was applied to three datasets under a shared set of acoustic and psychoacoustic predictors to assess ISO circumplex compliance. Bayesian mixed-effects ordered-logistic models were fitted to predict ratings of each perceived affective quality (PAQ) item and evaluated using participant-

Using Pitch Height and Pitch Strength to Characterize Type 1, 2, and 3 Voice Signals.

OBJECTIVE: Classifying dysphonic voices as type 1, 2, and 3 signals based on their periodicity enables researchers to determine the validity of acoustic measures derived from them. Existing methods of signal typing are commonly performed by listening to the voice sample and visualizing them on narrow-band spectrograms that require training, time, and are subjective in nature. The current study investigated pitch-based metrics (pitch height and pitch strength) as correlates to characterizing voice signal types. The computational estimates were validated with perceptual judgments of pitch height

Real-Space Hybrid Topological Singularities in Structured Elastic Waves.

Real-space singularities govern a broad spectrum of wave phenomena, yet they remain largely unexplored in elastic wave systems. Here, we report hybrid topological singularities that emerge on the surfaces of finite-sized solids due to the full vectorial character of elastic waves. These textures fuse spin-field singularities with displacement-field singularities and exhibit unique nonpairwise topological charge dynamics. Moreover, a subset of these singularities imprint dislocation lines onto the radiated acoustic field, generating robust acoustic vortices in free space from an otherwise achir

Time after time: neural codes of speech comprehension.

The acoustic signal of speech is fleeting and unfolds linearly; yet listeners must derive temporally extended and hierarchically organized linguistic structures to comprehend it. This article reviews evidence that the human brain transforms the transient auditory signal into neural representations that are persistent, parallel, and time-stamped. First, neural persistence allows information to remain available after it has disappeared from the acoustic input. Second, parallel encoding of recent inputs across multiple levels of language structure enables composition and interactions across the s

Numerical evaluation of high-intensity focused ultrasound- induced thermal lesions in atherosclerotic plaques.

The aim of this study is to estimate the effects of some acoustic parameters on thermal lesions of atherosclerotic plaques in high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) fields. A fluid-solid thermal coupling model is presented for describing the temperature elevation and thermal ablation of atherosclerotic plaque. A finite element approach is used to solve the coupling equations in cylindrical coordinates. The model considers the effect of the wall thickness of large arteries. The extent of the tissue lesion is determined by the accumulated thermal lesion with Arrhenius integral equation at each

High-fidelity continuum modeling predicts avian voiced sound production.

Voiced sound production is the primary form of acoustic communication in terrestrial vertebrates, particularly birds and mammals, including humans. Developing a causal physics-based model that ultimately links descending vocal motor control to tissue vibration and sound requires embodied approaches that include realistic representations of voice physiology. Here, we first implement and then experimentally test a high-fidelity three-dimensional (3D) continuum model for voiced sound production in birds. Driven by individual-based physiologically quantifiable inputs, combined with noninvasive inv

Wideband detection of middle ear muscle activation using swept-tone distortion product otoacoustic emissions.

The measurement of efferent-induced suppression of otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) using contralateral acoustic stimulation (CAS) is complicated by potential contamination by the middle ear muscle reflex (MEMR), particularly at moderate to high CAS levels. When logarithmically sweeping primaries are used to measure distortion product otoacoustic emissions, the level and phase of the primaries at the entrance of the ear canal may be monitored simultaneously along with the OAEs elicited by the swept-tones. A method of detecting MEMR activation using swept-tones is presented in which the differences

The locus equation as an index of coarticulation in syllables produced by speakers with profound hearing loss.

Locus equations (LEs) were derived from consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) syllables produced by four speakers with profound hearing loss. Group data indicated that LE functions obtained for the separate CVC productions initiated by /b/, /d/, and /g/ were less well-separated in acoustic space than those obtained from speakers with normal hearing. A general trend of reduced anticipatory coarticulation was obtained for contexts in which speakers with normal hearing ordinarily coarticulate. One speaker engaged more coarticulation than did speakers with normal hearing. Speakers' productions could be

High-frequency ultrasound sensors using polymer microring resonators.

Polymer microring resonators are demonstrated as high-frequency, ultrasound detectors. An optical microring resonator consists of a ring waveguide closely coupled to a straight bus waveguide, serving as light input and output. Acoustic waves irradiating the ring induce strain, deforming the waveguide dimensions and changing the refractive index of the waveguide via the elasto-optic effect. These effects modify the effective refractive index of the guided mode inside the waveguide. The sharp wavelength dependence of the microring resonance can enhance the optical response to acoustic strain. Su

Atrial septal defect: a diagnostic approach.

A simple objective screening method for diagnosis of the atrial septal defect (ASD) is needed. Acoustic signals were collected from 61 children with ASD and 60 with a physiological murmur. The second heart sound (S2) and the spectrum of systolic murmur were analysed. A statistical model was designed using stepwise logistic regression analysis. Significant variables distinguishing pathological form normal findings were the interval between the first heart sound and the beginning of systolic murmur or the respiratory variation of S2, and the frequency of the murmur at its maximum intensity. The

Possible new assessment of patulous Eustachian tube function: audiometry for tones presented in the nasal cavity.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the acoustic transfer function of the Eustachian tube by means of audiometric measurements in order to evaluate the severity of the patulous condition. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Detection thresholds for tones presented in the nasal cavity (at the nostril) were measured in subjects with a patulous Eustachian tube (PET) and in normal subjects. RESULTS: In typical cases, these thresholds were lower in the subjects with PET and were markedly elevated to the same level as those of normal subjects by the insufflation of Lugol's solution (iodine solution). The pre- versus post-insu

[Intraoperative electroneurophysiological monitoring of basal cranial nerve surgery].

INTRODUCTION: Since 1980 when intraoperative monitoring was introduced or acoustic nerve surgery, the technique rapidly was outspreaded to the other basal cranial nerves, and today is the most important and indispensable piece of work first of all because of its effectiveness in the prevention of the neurologic deficits. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work is to describe the basic requisites needed (personnel, equipment, stimulation and recording electrodes, patient handling), as well as to review the different techniques used (electromyography and electroneurography) in the motor cranial nerve m

Severe optic disc edema without hydrocephalus in neurofibromatosis 2.

A 26-year-old man who had neurofibromatosis type-2 with symptoms of unexplained optic disc edema is reported. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed bilateral acoustic schwannomas. Obstructive hydrocephalus, however, was not evident in spite of his severe disc edema and visual loss. After partial removal of the right acoustic schwannoma, symptoms of intracranial hypertension, such as vomiting and headache, developed and MRI demonstrated evidence of obstructive hydrocephalus. Placement of a ventricular-peritoneal shunt relieved the symptoms of intracranial hypertension, but visual acuity in

Physics of ultrasonic surgery using tissue fragmentation: Part I.

The ultrasonic surgical aspirator employs a vibrating metal tip to fragment tissue and then aspirates the debris through the hollow center of the tip. The mechanism of interaction has been stated to be poorly understood, most likely related to cavitation, possibly in concert with other mechanical actions. In Part I (of two parts), the role of stroke, suction, frequency, tissue type and tip area are examined with regard to tissue fragmentation rate. A tissue quantifier which can be used to relate the performance of the ultrasonic aspirator and a selected tissue is described. Suction is shown to

Solitary primary lymphoma of the cerebellopontine angle: case report.

A 27-year-old woman had a solitary primary B-cell lymphoma that involved the right cerebellopontine angle. The tumor invaded the ipsilateral acoustic nerve and produced profound sensory neural hearing loss. Surgical resection was promptly followed by radiotherapy and a concluding brief chemotherapy treatment. The patient survived 34 months after the initial onset of the disease or 22 months after the combined treatments. Only six lymphomas affecting the cerebellopontine angle, three primary and three secondary, have been recorded. The combination of surgical treatment and radiotherapy appeared

A continuous-flow model for phonatory reaction time.

The purpose of this study was to validate a proposed continuous-flow model of phonatory reaction time by investigating the temporal order of selected laryngeal and neurophysiological events involved in a phonatory reaction time task. Ten normal speakers participated in a phonatory reaction time task. Laryngeal positioning movements prior to vocal fold closure (laryngeal shift) and onset of vocal fold vibration (acoustic onset) were recorded with an electroglottograph. P300 brain potentials were collected simultaneously, and they served as an index of a central process underlying reaction time.

A discrete projection of the sacculus and lagena to a distinct brainstem nucleus in a catfish.

The projection of individual inner ear maculae of the catfish, Ancistrus spec. were labelled with horseradish peroxidases (HRP) or fluorescent dextran amines. In ostariophysans, fibres which innervate epithelia known or assumed to be sensitive to the pressure component of aquatic sound, i.e. acoustic fibres which come from the sacculus and lagena, have projections separate from those of the utriculus and canal organs. In Ancistrus afferents of sacculus and lagena terminate in an area which is distinct based on its cytoarchitecture. This area, previously believed to be a secondary auditory nucl
