Does preschool executive control mediate the impact of early environmental unpredictability and deprivation on the general factor of psychopathology a decade later?

BACKGROUND: Although deprivation has been consistently shown to increase risk for psychopathology through impaired executive control, the unique effects of other dimensions of early adversity, such as unpredictability, on executive control development are poorly understood. The current study evaluated whether deprivation and/or unpredictability early in life have unique effects on the general factor of psychopathology through impaired preschool executive control. METHODS: Participants included 312 children (51% female) oversampled for greater sociodemographic risk. Preschool executive control

Current clinical perspective of urological oncology in the adolescent and young adult generation.

Among adolescents and young adults, hematological tumors are the most common malignancies in younger patients; however, solid tumors also increase with advancing age. The pathogenesis of some of these tumors differs from that of tumors which develop in children, or middle-aged and older adults, and special care should be taken in their treatment and management. A treatment plan that takes into consideration future fertility is necessary for testicular tumors, and an educational campaign to encourage early detection is also essential. The treatment of adolescents with advanced testicular tumors

Adolescents' neural reactivity to acute psychosocial stress: dysfunctional regulation habits are linked to temporal gyrus response.

Mid-adolescence is a critical time for the development of stress-related disorders and it is associated with significant social vulnerability. However, little is known about normative neural processes accompanying psychosocial stress at this time. Previous research found that emotion regulation strategies critically influence the relationship between stress and the development of psychiatric symptoms during adolescence. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we examined neural responses to acute stress and analyzed whether the tendency to use adaptive or maladaptive emotion regula

Gynecologic Management of Adolescents and Young Women With Seizure Disorders: ACOG Committee Opinion, Number 806.

Seizure disorders frequently are diagnosed and managed during adolescence; therefore, obstetrician-gynecologists who care for adolescents should be familiar with epilepsy and other seizure disorders, as well as antiepileptic drugs. Patients diagnosed with seizure disorders during childhood may have increased seizure activity with puberty and menarche due to the neuroactive properties of endogenous steroid hormones. Compared with patients without epilepsy, patients with epilepsy are more likely to experience anovulatory cycles, irregular menstrual bleeding, and amenorrhea. Although hormonal sup

Association Between Age and Familial Risk for Alcoholism on Functional Connectivity in Adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: Youth with a family history of alcohol use disorder (family history positive [FHP]) are at increased risk for developing maladaptive substance use relative to family history negative (FHN) peers. Building on earlier studies demonstrating morphological differences and distinct patterns of neural activation in FHP, the purpose of the present study was to investigate differential intrinsic functional connectivity among brain networks indexing premorbid risk of developing alcohol use disorder (AUD). METHOD: The current study examined intrinsic functional connectivity using resting stat

Psychosocial interventions for responding to child sexual abuse: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: In this manuscript, we summarize the findings of a systematic review that informed the development of the World Health Organization's recommendations related to psychosocial interventions for child and adolescent sexual abuse. METHOD: Systematic searches across 14 databases were conducted to retrieve any published randomized controlled trials of psychosocial interventions addressing mental health outcomes among children and adolescents exposed to sexual abuse who have experienced symptoms. We assessed study risk of bias using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool and certainty of the evi

Bilateral alterations in somatosensory cortical processing in hemiplegic cerebral palsy.

AIM: In individuals with cerebral palsy (CP), cerebral insults during early development may induce profound reorganization of the motor representation. This study determined the extent of alterations in cortical somatosensory functions in adolescents with hemiplegic CP with subcortical brain lesions. METHOD: We recorded somatosensory evoked magnetic fields in response to hand area stimulation from eight adolescents with hemiplegic CP (five females and three males; mean age 14y 6mo, SD 2y 3mo) and eight age- and sex-matched healthy comparison adolescents (mean age 15y 4mo, SD 2y 4mo). The development of the corpus callosum in the healthy human brain.

The corpus callosum changes structurally throughout life, but most dramatically during childhood and adolescence. Even so, existing studies of callosal development tend to use parcellation schemes that may not capture the complex spatial profile of anatomical changes. Thus, more detailed mapping of callosal growth processes is desirable to create a normative reference. This will help to relate and interpret other structural, functional, and behavioral measurements, both from healthy subjects and pediatric patients. We applied computational surface-based mesh-modeling methods to analyze callosa

Developmental trajectories of male physical violence and theft: relations to neurocognitive performance.

CONTEXT: Neurocognitive mechanisms have long been hypothesized to influence developmental trajectories of antisocial behavior. However, studies examining this association tend to aggregate a variety of problem behaviors that may be differently affected by neurocognitive deficits. OBJECTIVE: To describe the developmental trajectories of physical violence and theft from adolescence to adulthood, their associations, and the neurocognitive characteristics of individuals following different patterns of trajectory association. DESIGN: Accelerated cohort-sequential, longitudinal design. SETTING: R

[Post-traumatic shoulder instability in adolescence].

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic shoulder instability in adolescence represents a very rare condition. However, most of these patients develop recurrent shoulder dislocations over time. METHODS: We report about a retrospective study, which included 32 patients younger than 16 years of age. The mean follow-up was 5 years. Our evaluation focussed on patients' age at the time of first shoulder dislocation, type of injury, and the results after conservative and operative treatment. RESULTS: After the first dislocation, all shoulders were immobilized for 3 weeks and were treated with physiotherapy afte

Assessing visual attention in young children and adolescents with severe mental retardation utilizing conditional-discrimination tasks and multiple testing procedures.

To effectively reduce overselective attention, a fine-grained analysis of the control exhibited by compound training cues is first needed. Computer software was developed in this study to administer two different stimulus control-testing procedures to assess how three young children of normal development and three adolescents with severe mental retardation attended to stimulus compounds when conditional-discrimination tasks were provided. One test assessed stimulus control by determining response accuracy for each component of the S+ compounds. The other testing procedure measured the response

Association of anthropometric measures with risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease in Hispanic and Caucasian adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Hispanics are disproportionately affected by the obesity epidemic in the United States. Obesity is a primary risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and Type 2 diabetes, which are problematic in Hispanic adults. There are limited data relating obesity status in Hispanic adolescents to diabetes and CVD risk. METHODS: We studied 115 lean and obese adolescents (89 Hispanic, 26 Caucasian), ranging in body mass index (BMI) from 15 to 52 kg/m(2). We assessed the relationships between four anthropometric indices of obesity and risk factors for Type 2 diabetes (ins

3' untranslated region A>C (rs3212227) polymorphism of Interleukin 12B gene as a potential risk factor for Hodgkin's lymphoma in Brazilian children and adolescents.

Interleukin 12 plays an important role in immunoregulation between the T helper 1/T helper 2 lymphocytes and in the antiviral and antitumor immune response. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible association between the interleukin 12B polymorphism rs3212227 and the risk to develop Hodgkin's lymphoma in childhood and adolescents. A total of 100 patients with Hodgkin's lymphoma and a group of 181 healthy controls were selected at random from a forensic laboratory of the University of Pernambuco. The AA genotype was detected in the controls (53.04%) and the AC genotype was found i

Longitudinal development of manual motor ability in autism spectrum disorder from childhood to mid-adulthood relates to adaptive daily living skills.

Many individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) exhibit motor difficulties, but it is unknown whether manual motor skills improve, plateau, or decline in ASD in the transition from childhood into adulthood. Atypical development of manual motor skills could impact the ability to learn and perform daily activities across the life span. This study examined longitudinal grip strength and finger tapping development in individuals with ASD (n = 90) compared to individuals with typical development (n = 56), ages 5 to 40 years old. We further examined manual motor performance as a possible correl

Longitudinal associations of childhood parenting and adolescent health: the mediating influence of social competence.

The current study examined a process through which parenting during the primary school transition contributes to cardiovascular health in adolescence, a foundational period for adult health trajectories. Using path analyses, social competence was tested as a mediator between parental sensitivity and adolescent health among 884 families. Results indicated that mothers' and fathers' sensitivity was associated with increasing social competence from first grade (age 7) to sixth grade (age 12), which was associated with higher awakening cortisol in ninth grade (age 15) and decreasing blood pressure

Facial emotion recognition in childhood-onset bipolar I disorder: an evaluation of developmental differences between youths and adults.

OBJECTIVES: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a severe mental illness with high healthcare costs and poor outcomes. Increasing numbers of youths are diagnosed with BD, and many adults with BD report that their symptoms started in childhood, suggesting that BD can be a developmental disorder. Studies advancing our understanding of BD have shown alterations in facial emotion recognition both in children and adults with BD compared to healthy comparison (HC) participants, but none have evaluated the development of these deficits. To address this, we examined the effect of age on facial emotion recognition

DSM-V diagnostic criteria for bereavement-related disorders in children and adolescents: developmental considerations.

Two bereavement-related disorders are proposed for the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V): Adjustment Disorder Related to Bereavement, to be located in the main body of the text as an official diagnostic entity; and Bereavement-Related Disorder, including a Traumatic Death Specifier, to be located in the Appendix as an invitation for further research. These diagnoses currently do not include developmentally informed criteria, despite the importance of developmental processes in the ways children and adolescents grieve. In this article, we draw up

Structure provided by parents in middle childhood predicts cortisol reactivity in adolescence among the offspring of parents with bipolar disorder and controls.

Recent studies suggest that childhood exposure to adversity influences later functioning of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Parenting style in childhood, a putative moderator of adversity, may be important in determining HPA reactivity in adolescence. As part of a prospective, longitudinal study, saliva was collected at awakening and 30 and 60 min later over 2 days among 27 offspring of parents with bipolar disorder (high risk; 16.7+/-1.5 years) and 26 offspring of parents with no mental disorders (low risk; 16.2+/-1.7 years). In addition, 24 of the high risk and 22 of the low r
