Perceptions of health professionals on pain in extremely low gestational age infants.

Extremely low gestational age infants (<28 weeks at birth) experience significant pain from repeated therapeutic procedures while hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit. As part of a program of research examining pain in preterm infants, we conducted a qualitatively driven mixed-methods design, supplemented with a qualitative and quantitative component, to understand how health care professionals (HCPs) assess and manage procedural pain for tiny and underdeveloped preterm infants. Fifty-nine HCPs from different disciplines across four tertiary-level neonatal units in Canada participa

Ecological and biomedical functions of parasitofauna: Mechanistic and evolutionary perspectives.

Parasites have traditionally been viewed primarily as pathogenic organisms associated with disease and economic burden. However, growing evidence indicates that parasitofauna-the diverse assemblage of parasitic organisms across ecosystems-plays fundamental roles in ecological regulation, host evolution, and biomedical innovation. Despite increasing recognition of these functions, existing literature largely treats ecological, immunological, and translational aspects of parasitism in isolation, lacking an integrated mechanistic framework that links these domains across biological scales. This r

Health-Damaging Climate Events Highlight the Need for Interdisciplinary, Engaged Research.

In 2023 human populations experienced multiple record-breaking climate events, with widespread impacts on human health and well-being. These events include extreme heat domes, drought, severe storms, flooding, and wildfires. Due to inherent lags in the climate system, we can expect such extremes to continue for multiple decades after reaching net zero carbon emissions. Unfortunately, despite these significant current and future impacts, funding for research in climate and health has lagged behind that for other geoscience and biomedical research. While some initial efforts from funding agencie…

Schizosaccharomyces pombe as a fundamental model for research on mitochondrial gene expression: Progress, achievements and outlooks.

Schizosaccharomyces pombe (fission yeast) is an attractive model for mitochondrial research. The organism resembles human cells in terms of mitochondrial inheritance, mitochondrial transport, sugar metabolism, mitogenome structure and dependence of viability on the mitogenome (the petite-negative phenotype). Transcriptions of these genomes produce only a few polycistronic transcripts, which then undergo processing as per the tRNA punctuation model. In general, the machinery for mitochondrial gene expression is structurally and functionally conserved between fission yeast and humans. Furthermor

A Rapid and Uniform Magnetization Method for Fe3O4 Nanoparticles Assisted by Rotating Magnetic Fields for Microrobots.

Micro/nanorobots have garnered significant attention due to their potential applications in biomedical fields such as minimally invasive surgery, targeted drug delivery, and cell manipulation. Magnetic field actuation, as a non-invasive and highly biocompatible driving method, has become a research hotspot. However, traditional magnetic functionalization methods like magnetron sputtering suffer from complex processes, high costs, and poor biocompatibility. Meanwhile, the mixture method combining magnetic particles with photoresist is constrained by particle dispersion and molding quality. To a

A decade-long retrospective analysis of cell line authentication in China using over 10,000 samples.

Since the 1951 establishment of the HeLa cell line, immortalized cell lines have served as indispensable in vitro models for basic and clinical biomedical research. However, misidentification and contamination continue to undermine experimental reproducibility and validity. Here, we authenticate 11,087 cell lines from 6,947 Chinese institutions between 2016 and 2025 using STR profiling. Decade-long analysis reveals steady annual increases in testing volume and accuracy, identifying HeLa, T24, K-562, HEK293T, and A-549 as the most frequent contaminants. We observe that mutation rates at core ST…

Fluorescent alginate fiber with super-strong and super-tough mechanical performances for biomedical applications.

Emerging research attentions are focused on the development of fluorescent biomaterials for various biomedical applications, including fluorescence-guided surgery. However, it is still challenging to prepare biomolecules-based fluorescent fibers with both satisfactory biocompatibility and optimal mechanical properties. Here, we develop a fluorescent robust biofiber through using a tetraphenylethene-containing surfactant as the contact points between polysaccharide chains of alginate. This newly developed contact points not only strengthen the cross-linking network of polysaccharide chains, but

Twenty years of sex and gender science in health research: a policy statement from the Organization for the Study of Sex Differences.

Sex and gender are fundamental determinants of health, disease risk, and treatment responses, yet they remain inconsistently and inadequately integrated into biomedical research. Despite major funding and regulatory policies over the past two decades, sex and gender continue to be treated primarily as descriptive variables rather than drivers of discovery. As the Organization for the Study of Sex Differences (OSSD) marks twenty years of leadership in this field, this policy statement articulates OSSD's position on best practices for the integration of sex and gender in health research. Drawing…

Genetically modified mouse models to help fight COVID-19.

The research community is in a race to understand the molecular mechanisms of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, to repurpose currently available antiviral drugs and to develop new therapies and vaccines against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). One major challenge in achieving these goals is the paucity of suitable preclinical animal models. Mice constitute ~70% of all the laboratory animal species used in biomedical research. Unfortunately, SARS-CoV-2 infects mice only if they have been genetically modified to express human ACE2. The inherent resistanc…
