The Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26): reliability and validity in Spanish female samples.

This paper focuses on the validation of the Spanish form of the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26; Garner, Olmsted, Bohr & Garfinkel, 1982) across two studies. Participants in Study 1 were 778 females recruited from community settings (aged 12-21). Study 2 included 86 females recruited from clinical and 86 females from community settings (aged 12-35). Results from Principal and Simultaneous Component Analyses showed a unidimensional structure of the EAT-26 item scores. Reliability analyses supported the internal consistency of the scale. Study 1 also explores the ability of the EAT-26 to discrimin

Eating disorders and signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders: a matched case-control study.

The aim of the study was to examine signs and symptoms related to temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in patients with eating disorders (ED) and to compare the prevalence with that in sex- and age-matched controls. During a 12-month period, all patients (n = 65) who accepted and initiated psychiatric/medical outpatient treatment in an Eating Disorder Clinic/Erikbergsgården, Orebro, Sweden were invited to participate in the study. Of the ED patients, 54 (83%) accepted participation. ED patients and controls underwent a comprehensive TMD questionnaire and clinical examination. Reported symptoms su

Binge eating disorder pharmacotherapy clinical trails--who is left out?

OBJECTIVE: This report examined the characteristics of subjects interested in binge eating disorder (BED) pharmacotherapy trails who were ineligible for participation. METHODS: Data on 2685 potential subjects interested in participating in five different placebo-controlled monotherapy trails of BED were analysed. RESULTS: Of the 2685 potential subjects, 1230 (45.8%) were ineligible because they did not meet entry criteria, 586 (21.8%) were eligible for participation, 531 (19.8%) were not interested in the study and 338 (12.6%) were not contacted. Among the 1230 ineligible candidates, 525 (42

Recruitment for a guided self-help binge eating trial: potential lessons for implementing programs in everyday practice settings.

OBJECTIVE: To explore effects of various recruitment strategies on randomized clinical trial (RCT)-entry characteristics for patients with eating disorders within an everyday health-plan practice setting. METHODS: Randomly selected women, aged 25-50, in a Pacific Northwest HMO were invited to complete a self-report binge-eating screener for two treatment trials. We publicized the trials within the health plan to allow self-referral. Here, we report differences on eating-disorder status by mode and nature of recruitment (online, mail, self-referred) and assessment (comprehensive versus abbrevi

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and obesity: two facets of the same disease?

We hypothesize that when two pathological conditions or personality traits share the same critical period for gene-environment interaction, we should expect further similarities, particularly from clinical and pathophysiological perspectives. They should therefore be considered as two facets of the same disease. To test this hypothesis we compiled data included in the Primal Health Research Database. This database (www.primalhealthresearch.com) is specialised in studies exploring correlations between what happens during the 'primal period' (fetal life, perinatal period and year following birth

Body Image Assessment Software: psychometric data.

The aim of the present study was to analyze the psychometric characteristics of the Body Image Assessment Software (BIAS), an innovative interactive computer program developed to assess body image disturbances. The program was tested on 252 psychology students at the University of Barcelona and 51 patients with an eating disorder (ED). The subjects filled in the Eating Attitudes Test-26, the Body Shape Questionnaire, the body dissatisfaction scale of the Eating Disorders Inventory-2, and the Body Image Assessment-Revised (a test of silhouettes). Results showed good validity and very high relia

Treatment emergent mania responding to valproate in a Chinese female adolescent population with eating disorders: a case series.

Eating disorders are commonly associated with depressive symptoms. In an adolescent and binge eating population fluoxetine is commonly used to treat co-morbid depression associated with eating disorders. In some patients this may precipitate treatment emergent mania (TEM). Risk factors in the adolescent population include being older, female, having a longer duration of illness, more previous mood episodes, a higher prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism, early-onset anxiety and recent exposure to a mood-elevating agent. Diagnosis and management of these co-morbid conditions is challenging d

Review of controlled psychotherapy treatment trials for binge eating disorder.

This paper reviews investigations of psychotherapy outcome studies for binge eating disorder, which has recently been intensively studied as several researchers have undertaken the task of delineating which treatment options are the most effective. Several randomized, controlled clinical trials have provided important findings. A current debate concerns what the initial course of treatment should be, reducing binge eating patterns or reducing weight. Several limitations to this literature are mentioned, including the dearth of studies investigating treatment for men and boys with binge eating

Validation of the Barcelona Bipolar Eating Disorder Scale for bipolar patients with eating disturbances.

BACKGROUND: Eating disturbances are frequent in bipolar disorder and are associated with poor outcome. Our objective is to assess the psychometric properties of a specific scale for the evaluation of eating disturbances in bipolar patients. SAMPLING AND METHODS: Validation study of 2 groups with a 6-month follow-up (90 patients diagnosed with bipolar and eating disturbances and 40 healthy controls). RESULTS: The scale showed: (1) adequate feasibility (non- response <2.5%); (2) adequate reliability (Cronbach's alpha coefficients = 0.79 and 0.57 in groups A and B; intraclass correlation coeffi

The prevalence of childhood trauma and parental caretaking quality among gastric surgery candidates.

In this study, we examined the prevalence of traumatic childhood experiences as well as the quality of parental caretaking among 121 individuals (85.9% of which were women) seeking surgical treatment for obesity (mean body mass index of 47.2). Among this sample, 43.0% reported emotional abuse, 39.0% the witnessing of violence, 19.0% sexual abuse, 17.4% physical abuse, and 9.1% physical neglect. While the overall quality of parental caretaking was skewed toward a positive rating, those respondents who indicated each form of childhood trauma rated the quality of parental caretaking lower than di

Self-presentational motives in eating disordered behavior: a known groups difference approach.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the role of self-presentation motivation across three groups with known differences in disordered eating behavior. METHODS: Female participants (N=131) were currently in-treatment for an eating disorder (n=39), deemed at-risk (n=46), or not-at-risk for an eating disorder (n=46). All participants completed general and physique-specific measures of self-presentation motivation. RESULTS: Results revealed significant moderate differences between groups. Those not-at-risk reported lower levels of self-presentation motivation across all measures compared to those

Detecting Binge Eating Risk With Naturalistic Data and Machine Learning: A Comparative Observational Study.

OBJECTIVE: Negative affect is a primary antecedent for binge eating (BE). Just-in-time adaptive interventions (JITAIs) prompt the use of therapy skills when at risk for maladaptive behaviors. JITAIs show promise for improving emotion regulation skill use and decreasing BE. Identifying momentary negative affect has relied on ecological momentary assessment (EMA). EMA surveys are typically delivered 4-6 times/day via smartphone and are self-report; accordingly, EMA is limited by temporal granularity, participant insight, and adherence. Wearable sensors which continuously, passively measure physi

A naturalistic, long-term follow-up of purging disorder.

BACKGROUND: The DSM-5 introduced purging disorder (PD) as an other specified feeding or eating disorder characterized by recurrent purging in the absence of binge eating. The current study sought to describe the long-term outcome of PD and to examine predictors of outcome. METHODS: Women (N = 84) who met research criteria for PD completed a comprehensive battery of baseline interview and questionnaire assessments. At an average of 10.24 (3.81) years follow-up, available records indicated all women were living, and over 95% were successfully located (n = 80) while over two-thirds (n = 58) comp

Intimate partner violence among women with eating disorders during the perinatal period.

OBJECTIVE: Prevalence of intimate partner violence (IPV) during pregnancy is estimated to be 4%-8%. Women with mental health difficulties are at increased risk for IPV during the perinatal period. Prevalence of IPV is high among women with eating disorders (ED); however, prevalence of IPV during the perinatal period among women with ED is unknown. METHOD: We studied women from a population-based cohort, the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children. Prevalence and odds of physical and emotional IPV during and after the perinatal period was investigated among women with lifetime ED, with

Eating disorder beliefs and behaviours across eating disorder diagnoses.

OBJECTIVE: To test for differences between diagnostic groups on the severity of eating disorder beliefs and behaviours, evaluate the clinical significance of such differences, and assess the extent to which these beliefs and behaviours may be present at clinically significant levels across eating disorder diagnoses. METHOD: 136 adult women outpatients (aged 18-65, with a BMI over 15) were diagnosed with an eating disorder and completed the Stirling Eating Disorder Scale. RESULTS: The expected pattern of statistically significant differences was found between diagnostic groups on anorexic die

An exploration of the main sources of shame in an eating-disordered population.

OBJECTIVES: Shame has received increased attention over recent years and has been shown to be a feature of many forms of psychopathology, including eating disorders. The current study contributes to this field by exploring relationships between shame and a variety of factors hypothesized to contribute to shame in a sample of 52 females with eating disorders. DESIGN: A cross-sectional questionnaire design was used. METHODS: Participants were 52 women with eating disorders. They completed six questionnaires: The Experience of Shame Scale, the Parental Bonding Inventory, the Social Isolation Su

[Personality disorders in eating disorder patients].

Personality disorders in eating disorder patients. A follow-up study was designed to analyze the relation between personality disorders (PD) and the course of eating disorders (ED) in 34 patients who required treatment over 4 years and half. 91% of the clinical sample met the criteria for PD at the initial assessment and 36% at the end of treatment, with a significant reduction in MCMI-II scores at follow-up. The outcome of the ED was significantly related to the PD outcome. There was a higher rate of improvement of PD in the bulimic group (61%) than in anorexic group (34%). The patients who p

Perceived parental psychological control and eating-disordered symptoms: maladaptive perfectionism as a possible intervening variable.

Recent developmental theorizing conceptualizes perfectionism as a mediator of the relation between intrusive parenting and psychopathology. Research addressing this hypothesis in relation to eating disorders (EDs), however, is lacking. This case-control study (a) examined mean-level differences between ED patients and normal controls in psychologically controlling parenting and perfectionism and (b) addressed the intervening role of perfectionism in associations between psychological control and ED symptoms, distinguishing between maladaptive and relatively more adaptive types of perfectionism
