ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Dengue virus (DENV) is a re-emerging mosquito-borne flavivirus that has recently engendered large epidemics around the world. Consequently antivirals with effective anti-DENV therapeutic activity are urgently required. In the 18th century, Europeans, as well as native inhabitants of North America, were known to adapt the medicinal property of the common perennial plant Eupatorium perfoliatum L. to treat fever and infections. Previous studies have shown that Eupatorium perfoliatum L. possesses anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, anti-plasmodial, anti-bacterial and

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Chikungunya disease (CHIKD) is caused by the alphavirus, chikungunya virus (CHIKV) and is characterized by acute fever and joint inflammation; the inflammation continues even after clearance of the virus from the system, persisting for several months to years. Currently, there are no modern medicines/vaccines available for its treatment and use of over-the-counter anti-inflammatory generic medicines to relieve symptoms is generally practiced. In India, Indian traditional medicines hold a lot of promise to treat this infection and are routinely used during outbre

Thamnolia subuliformis (Ehrh.) W. Culb is a species of lichen with edible and medicinal applications in China. Our previous studies demonstrated that the methanol extract of Thamnolia subuliformis (METS) exhibits broad antibacterial activity and stability against foodborne pathogens. This study aimed to investigate the antibacterial mechanism of METS against Staphylococcus aureus using nontargeted metabolomics, focusing on cell wall and membrane damage. The results revealed that the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was 0.625 mg ml-1 and that METS had good biosafety at this concentration.

Prunella vulgaris (PV), a perennial herb, has been used to treat thyroid diseases in China for over 2,000 years. In particular, its therapeutic effect has been described for Hashimoto's thyroiditis, including reducing titers autoantibodies against thyroid peroxidase and thyroglobulin of and T helper 17 (Th17) cells. However, the underlying mechanism for how PV exerts such effects has not been investigated. We examined the effects of PV on innate immune activation, which is thought to be one of the triggers for the development of autoimmune diseases, including Hashimoto's thyroiditis. In cultur
