Transcranial direct current stimulation and sporting performance: A systematic review and meta-analysis of transcranial direct current stimulation effects on physical endurance, muscular strength and visuomotor skills.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that has been linked with a range of physiological and cognitive enhancements relevant to sporting performance. As a number of positive and null findings have been reported in the literature, the present meta-analysis sought to synthesise results across endurance, strength and visuomotor skill domains to investigate if tDCS improves any aspect of sporting performance. Online database searches in August 2020 identified 43 full-text studies which examined the acute effects of tDCS compared to sham/contro

Executive Function Training for Deaf Children: Impact of a Music Intervention.

Several studies have reported poor executive function (EF) development in deaf children with subsequent impacts on their social and academic attainment. This paper describes the results of a music-based EF intervention designed for deaf children and carried out in two sets of primary schools. This is the first classroom-based EF training study with deaf children, and it also incorporates a replication phase. The intervention was a within-subject crossover design, with 29 deaf children aged 7-11 years who participated in both an EF and an art class control activity, each lasting 10 hours over 5

Associations between communication OSCE performance and admission interviews in medical education.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate associations between medical students' communication and other clinical skills assessed in OSCEs and MMIs performance upon admission by developing an assessment strategy based on an internationally acknowledged curriculum framework. METHODS: Between July 2019 and March 2020, 365 medical students in the 4th and 5th semester took two OSCEs containing 10 5-minute stations examining communication and other clinical skills. We used a European conceptual framework to determine the content validity of the communication score and calculated scores of communication and other

The Advantages of Retrieval-Based and Spaced Practice: Implications for Word Learning in Clinical and Educational Contexts.

Purpose Researchers in the cognitive sciences have identified several key training strategies that support good encoding and retention of target information. These strategies are retrieval-based practice, also known as learning through testing, and spaced practice. The recent resurgence of research on retrieval-based and spaced practice has been extended to investigate the effectiveness of these strategies to support learning in individuals with language disorders. The purpose of the current article is to review key principles of retrieval-based and spaced practice that can be used to support

Reversal learning impairments in the maternal immune activation rat model of schizophrenia.

One of the cognitive symptoms observed in schizophrenia is decreased flexibility in several tasks, including reversal learning. Reversal learning has previously been tested in rats following maternal immune activation (MIA), a risk factor for schizophrenia, with varying results. Whereas some previous studies have shown that MIA rats are slower to learn a reversal, others have reported more rapid learning compared with controls. Several of these latter studies have, however, used a T-maze task with aversive, negative reinforcement as a motivating factor. Because most human studies use positive

The effects of psychosocial interventions on death anxiety: A meta-analysis and systematic review of randomised controlled trials.

Death anxiety has been proposed as a transdiagnostic construct, underlying numerous mental disorders. Although it has been argued that treatments, which reduce death anxiety, are needed, research investigating the impact of interventions on death fears has produced mixed results. As such, the current meta-analysis aimed to examine the effect of psychosocial interventions on death anxiety. Overall, results from 15 randomised controlled trials suggested that psychosocial treatments produced significant reductions in death anxiety, with a small to medium effect size (g = .45). Intervention type (

Predictive connectome subnetwork extraction with anatomical and connectivity priors.

We present a new method to identify anatomical subnetworks of the human connectome that are optimally predictive of targeted clinical variables, developmental outcomes or disease states. Given a training set of structural or functional brain networks, derived from diffusion MRI (dMRI) or functional MRI (fMRI) scans respectively, our sparse linear regression model extracts a weighted subnetwork. By enforcing novel backbone network and connectivity based priors along with a non-negativity constraint, the discovered subnetworks are simultaneously anatomically plausible, well connected, positively

Poliomyelitis.

Poliomyelitis, often termed "polio," is an acute infectious disease caused by an enterovirus which damages the anterior horn cells of the spinal cord and brainstem. Progress to lower motor neurone cell death leads to disruption of motor units and subsequent muscle weakness or complete paralysis. Although the virus is mostly eradicated from the Western world, postpolio decline is prevalent among people aged 60 years and over. It is characterized primarily by fatigability and muscle weakness, but pain is also common. Reductions in lower-limb muscle strength, voluntary drive, and endurance are li

Virtual peer-delivered memory intervention: a single-case experimental design in an adolescent with chronic memory impairment.

BACKGROUND: Children and adolescents with chronic memory impairment may develop coping strategies that enable functioning, yet these often remain undetectable using traditional psychometric measures. Personalized intervention studies that promote the use of such strategies designed specifically for use by this young cohort are scarce. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of a novel virtual reality peer-delivered memory intervention on the everyday functioning and well-being of SE, a 17-year-old female with a history of chronic verbal memory issues, impaired autobiographical event recall and e

Thinking outside the boxes: Using current reading models to assess and treat developmental surface dyslexia.

Improving the reading performance of children with developmental surface dyslexia has proved challenging, with limited generalisation of reading skills typically reported after intervention. The aim of this study was to provide tailored, theoretically motivated intervention to two children with developmental surface dyslexia. Our objectives were to improve their reading performance, and to evaluate the utility of current reading models in therapeutic practice. Detailed reading and cognitive profiles for two male children with developmental surface dyslexia were compared to the results obtained

Salivary proteomics and biomarkers in neurology and psychiatry.

Biomarkers are greatly needed in the fields of neurology and psychiatry, to provide objective and earlier diagnoses of CNS conditions. Proteomics and other omics MS-based technologies are tools currently being utilized in much recent CNS research. Saliva is an interesting alternative biomaterial for the proteomic study of CNS disorders, with several advantages. Collection is noninvasive and saliva has many proteins. It is easier to collect than blood and can be collected by professionals without formal medical training. For psychiatric and neurological patients, supplying a saliva sample is le

Development of abstract thinking during childhood and adolescence: the role of rostrolateral prefrontal cortex.

Rostral prefrontal cortex (RPFC) has increased in size and changed in terms of its cellular organisation during primate evolution. In parallel emerged the ability to detach oneself from the immediate environment to process abstract thoughts and solve problems and to understand other individuals' thoughts and intentions. Rostrolateral prefrontal cortex (RLPFC) is thought to play an important role in supporting the integration of abstract, often self-generated, thoughts. Thoughts can be temporally abstract and relate to long term goals, or past or future events, or relationally abstract and focu

[From brain imaging to good teaching? implicating from neuroscience for research on learning and instruction].

Psychiatric disorders in childhood and adolescence, in particular attention deficit disorder or specific learning disorders like developmental dyslexia and developmental dyscalculia, affect academic performance and learning at school. Recent advances in neuroscientific research have incited an intensive debate both in the general public and in the field of educational and instructional science as well as to whether and to what extent these new findings in the field of neuroscience might be of importance for school-related learning and instruction. In this review, we first summarize neuroscient

A noncognitive temperament test to predict risk of mental disorders and attrition in U.S. Army recruits.

UNLABELLED: U.S. military accession mental health screening includes cognitive testing and questions regarding the applicants' past mental health history. This process relies on applicants' knowledge of and willingness to disclose symptoms and conditions. Applicants have a strong incentive to appear qualified, which has resulted in a long history of frequent mental health conditions presenting during recruit training. OBJECTIVE: To assess the predictive value of a pre-enlistment noncognitive temperament test score for risk of mental disorders and attrition in the first year of service. METHO

Iron deficiency anemia, active component, U.S. Armed Forces, 2002-2011.

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most common cause of anemia in the United States, and it particularly affects women of child-bearing age and black, non-Hispanic race/ethnicity. During the surveillance period there were 10,157 incident ("new") cases of IDA among active component service members; the overall incidence rate was 7.1 per 10,000 person-years. The annual incidence rates increased in both males and females during the period. Rates of IDA were higher among service members who were female, in the youngest (<20 years) and oldest age groups (40+ years), and of black, non-Hispanic race

The central amygdala projection to the substantia nigra reflects prediction error information in appetitive conditioning.

The central amygdala nucleus (CeA) plays a critical role in cognitive processes beyond fear conditioning. For example, intact CeA function is essential for enhancing attention to conditioned stimuli (CSs). Furthermore, this enhanced attention depends on the CeA's connections to the nigrostriatal system. In the current study, we examined the role of the CeA's connections to two midbrain dopamine regions, the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) and the ventral tegmental area (VTA), in processing CS information when predictions of reward or nonreward were confirmed or disconfirmed. Initially, tw
