AIM: This report summarises Australian passive surveillance data for adverse events following immunisation in NSW for 2010.
METHODS: Analysis of de-identified information on all adverse events following immunisation reported to the Therapeutic Goods Administration.
RESULTS: 424 adverse events following immunisation were reported for vaccines administered in 2010; this is 6% lower than 2009 but 24% higher than 2008 and the second highest number since 2003. A total of 274 (65%) adverse events involved seasonal or pandemic influenza vaccines. Reports were predominantly of mild transient events:

Streptococcal A infections are reemerging as a dangerous clinical problem. This particular infection is usually a problem for the postpartum mother and not usually associated with fetal or neonatal infections. Maternal morbidity and mortality are overwhelming when compared with other maternal infections. Historically, group A streptococcus was the cause of epidemic postpartum sepsis prior to the advent of proper hand-washing techniques. Currently, transmission can occur directly from a colonized healthcare provider, other patients, or a community-acquired source. The Joint Commission and the I

Potential side effects of antenatal administration of corticosteroids to prevent neonatal respiratory distress syndrome were studied in 10- to 12-year-old children whose mothers had participated in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of betamethasone. The children had a general physical examination; parents were interviewed about the medical history of their child with special attention to infectious diseases; growth data were collected; and a developmental neurological examination, an ophthalmological examination, and a lung function test were conducted. In the corticosteroid

BACKGROUND: The tobacco epidemic is one of the biggest public health threats and the world's leading cause of preventable death which is responsible for killing 8 million people every year. Adolescents are the vulnerable age group and are at greater risk of any tobacco use including smokeless tobacco (SLT) and nicotine addiction. Tobacco use at a young age increases the risk of various non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as respiratory illness, asthma, chronic obstructive respiratory disease (COPD), reduced pulmonary function, and cancers. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of smok

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D deficiency is increasingly recognised as a risk factor for non-communicable diseases, including hypertension. However, evidence on their relationship remains inconsistent, particularly in middle and low-income countries like Nepal. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among hypertensive and normotensive adults, and identify the demographic, anthropometric and clinical risk factors among hypertensive adults attending a tertiary care hospital in Kathmandu, Nepal.
METHODS: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 108 adults (54

BACKGROUND: Globally, one in four adults does not meet the WHO-recommended at least 150 min of moderate intensity physical activity per week. Insufficient physical activity is the fourth-leading risk factor, contributing to 9% of global premature mortality. Physical activity is effective in weight management, cardiorespiratory fitness, and enhancing the quality of life. A high proportion (43.1%) of people living in semi-urban areas of Nepal have insufficient physical activity. Limited evidence shows a lack of knowledge and motivation as major barriers to physical activity in Nepal. Female Comm

Introduction: While the effects of the US government's sudden pause of foreign aid on the global HIV response have been well documented, little is known about the likely impact on universal health coverage (UHC) in recipient countries. This study assesses the association between PEPFAR funding and the universal health service coverage index. Methods: Using data on PEPFAR investments in 24 countries between 2004 and 2020, the study applied fixed and time effects panel data regression on the main UHC index and its sub-indices for non-communicable diseases (NCDs), reproductive, maternal, newborn a

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are the most prevalent communicable diseases that impact people's health and wellbeing. One of the main obstacles to successful prevention and control of STIs is the delay in seeking healthcare, which can result in significant personal and economic losses. However, there are limited studies on the delay in healthcare seeking among STI patients in resource-limited countries such as Ethiopia.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess delays in seeking healthcare and associated factors among patients presenting with STIs at public health facilities i

Environmental pollution has harmful effects on human health, particularly the respiratory system. We aimed to study the impact of daily ambient air pollution on daily emergency room visits for acute respiratory symptoms. This study was conducted in two tertiary respiratory care centres in Delhi, India. Daily counts of emergency room visits were collected. All patients attending the emergency room were screened for acute onset (less than 2 weeks) of respiratory symptoms and were recruited if they were staying in Delhi continuously for at least 4 weeks and having onset (≤2 weeks) of respiratory

BACKGROUND: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and common mental disorders (CMDs) are the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. Lifestyle interventions via mobile apps and conversational agents present themselves as low-cost, scalable solutions to prevent these conditions. This paper describes the rationale for, and development of, "LvL UP 1.0″, a smartphone-based lifestyle intervention aimed at preventing NCDs and CMDs.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A multidisciplinary team led the intervention design process of LvL UP 1.0, involving four phases: (i) preliminary research (stakeholder cons

BACKGROUND: The impact of non-communicable diseases on tuberculosis incidence has received significant attention. It has been suggested that the risk of tuberculosis is higher among subjects with diabetes and these subjects also has poor TB treatment outcomes. This study was aimed at assessing the socio-demographic and clinical factors that may influence different outcome of TB in patients with DM (TB-DM) identified in the Brazilian national database from 2001 to 2011.
METHODS: TB-DM cases reported in the Brazilian information system were identified and compared.Covariates associated with the

INTRODUCTION: Shift work is an increasingly prevalent feature of the modern workforce, with first responders constituting a critical occupational group required to sustain 24-h operations. Modifiable health behaviour interventions, such as improving diet quality, may be effective in preventing or mitigating the non-communicable disease onset linked to shift work. This review evaluated evidence supporting nutritional interventions in shift workers with first responder populations considered as a pre-specified subgroup of interest.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Endocannabinoids (eCBs) are involved in various physiological functions such as appetite, metabolism, and inflammation. Although deterioration of these functions is often observed in patients with refractory cancer cachexia (RCC), the relationship between circulating eCBs and cancer cachexia remains unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between circulating levels of eCBs and clinical findings in patients with RCC.
METHODS: Circulating N-arachidonoylethanolamine (anandamide, AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) levels were measured in 39 patients with RCC

The objectives of the African Organisation for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC), both at its inception in the early 1980s, and at its reactivation in 2000 following a decade of inactivity, included bringing the products of decades of advances in cancer research to African populations through international collaboration. The historical perspective provided in this report illustrates progress in achieving these objectives through successive continent-wide activities over a period of 30 years, culminating in the organisation's most recent conference held in Durban, South Africa, 21-24 Nov

BACKGROUND: Asthma is one of the most common non-communicable diseases globally. This study aimed to assess asthma medicine use, management plan availability, and disease control in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood across different country settings.
METHODS: We used data from the Global Asthma Network Phase I cross-sectional epidemiological study (2015-20). A validated, written questionnaire was distributed via schools to three age groups (children, 6-7 years; adolescents, 13-14 years; and adults, ≥19 years). Eligible adults were the parents or guardians of children and adolescents inclu

Mosquito-borne viruses threaten the Caribbean due to the region's tropical climate and seasonal reception of international tourists. Outbreaks of chikungunya and Zika have demonstrated the rapidity with which these viruses can spread. Concurrently, dengue fever cases have climbed over the past decade. Sustainable disease control measures are urgently needed to quell virus transmission and prevent future outbreaks. Here, to improve upon current control methods, we analyze temporal and spatial patterns of chikungunya, Zika, and dengue outbreaks reported in the Dominican Republic between 2012 and

COVID-19 pandemic is the greatest communicable disease outbreak to have hit Malaysia since the 1918 Spanish Flu which killed 34,644 people or 1% of the population of the then British Malaya. In 1999, the Nipah virus outbreak killed 105 Malaysians, while the SARS outbreak of 2003 claimed only 2 lives. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has so far claimed over 100 Malaysian lives. There were two waves of the COVID-19 cases in Malaysia. First wave of 22 cases occurred from January 25 to February 15 with no death and full recovery of all cases. The ongoing second wave, which commenced on February 27, p

INTRODUCTION: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading cause of mortality in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR), driven largely by modifiable behavioral and metabolic risk factors such as unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, tobacco use, and obesity. Innovative and context-sensitive interventions are increasingly recognized as essential to address these challenges, particularly in settings characterized by sociocultural constraints, fragile health systems, and humanitarian crises. This systematic review aimed to examine evidence on innovative approaches for addressing NCD risk fact

BACKGROUND: The Health Belief Model (HBM) is a widely used psychological framework for explaining and predicting individual's health related attitudes, belief, and behaviors. Although the model has been applied across various fields of health and medical sciences, the extent of its global use, particularly across African and Asian countries has not been well documented.
OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aimed to assess the application of HBM in health sciences and medical research conducted between 2010 and 2025 in Africa and Asian countries.
METHODS: The review followed the updated Preferre
