Social enrichment mitigates facial expressions and physiological indicators of short-term stress in horses.

This study aimed to evaluate the ability of social noncontact environmental enrichment to facilitate social buffering and to characterize the emotional experience of horses subjected to restraint in stock by assessing physiological parameters and facial expressions. Pantaneiro horses (n = 11) were evaluated in a crossover design with two treatments: social noncontact enrichment during stock restraint and social isolation during stock restraint. Physiological parameters (heart rate, heart rate variability, respiratory rate, ocular temperature by infrared thermography, and auricular temperature

Prevention of noise-induced hearing loss in children - evidence-informed recommendations for safe listening at events.

OBJECTIVE: Children's events are often perceived as excessively loud, with risks of noise-induced hearing loss and other adverse effects. In many countries, including Hungary, specific regulations for recreational noise levels are absent. This research aims to establish a scientific basis for safety categories and noise level limits to protect children's hearing. DESIGN: Noise levels were measured at events, and otoacoustic emissions were assessed to determine auditory impacts. Children and parents also completed loudness perception surveys. STUDY SAMPLE: Thirteen events were analysed with 2

Assessing the efficacy of perilymphatic fistula repair surgery in alleviating vestibular symptoms and associated auditory impairments.

Perilymph Fistula (PLF), abnormal communication between the fluid-filled space of the inner ear and the air-filled space of the middle ear, is a significant cause of vestibular and auditory symptoms. This is a retrospective study of 22 cases treated with PLF repair surgery, selected based on our surgical indication. We analyzed the characteristics of these 22 cases and evaluated the efficacy of PLF repair surgery in treating vestibular and auditory symptoms. Cases with antecedent events had significantly shorter intervals before surgery. The postoperative recovery from vestibular symptoms foll

Microfluidic Preparation of Gelatin Methacryloyl Microgels as Local Drug Delivery Vehicles for Hearing Loss Therapy.

Local drug delivery has become an effective method for disease therapy in fine organs including ears, eyes, and noses. However, the multiple anatomical and physiological barriers, unique clearance pathways, and sensitive perceptions characterizing these organs have led to suboptimal drug delivery efficiency. Here, we developed dexamethasone sodium phosphate-encapsulated gelatin methacryloyl (Dexsp@GelMA) microgel particles, with finely tunable size through well-designed microfluidics, as otic drug delivery vehicles for hearing loss therapy. The release kinetics, encapsulation efficiency, drug

Acoustic effects of a superior semicircular canal dehiscence: a temporal bone study.

A dehiscence of the superior semicircular canal is said to be responsible for a number of specific and unspecific ear symptoms and possible a conductive hearing loss of up to 40 dB. As in vivo a dehiscence would not be opened against air, but is naturally patched with dura and the brain, it was our aim to investigate the effects of an superior semicircular canal dehiscence on the air conduction hearing in fresh human temporal bones with different boundary conditions. At ten fresh human temporal bones, we investigated the transmission of sound energy through the middle and inner ear using a rou

Gentamicin administration on the stapes footplate causes greater hearing loss and vestibulotoxicity than round window administration in guinea pigs.

Clinically, gentamicin has been used extensively to treat the debilitating symptoms of Mèniére's disease and is well known for its vestibulotoxic properties. Until recently, it was widely accepted that the round window membrane (RWM) was the primary entry route into the inner ear following intratympanic drug administration. In the current study, gentamicin was delivered to either the RWM or the stapes footplate of guinea pigs (GPs) to assess the associated hearing loss and histopathology associated with each procedure. Vestibulotoxicity of the utricular macula, saccular macula, and crista ampu

Noise trauma alters D-[3H]aspartate release and AMPA binding in chinchilla cochlear nucleus.

Exposure of adults to loud noise can overstimulate the auditory system, damage the cochlea, and destroy cochlear nerve axons and their synaptic endings in the brain. Cochlear nerve loss probably results from the death of cochlear inner hair cells (IHC). Additional degeneration in the cochlear nucleus (CN) is hypothesized to stem from overstimulation of the system, which may produce excitotoxicity. This study tested these predictions by exposing one ear of anesthetized adult chinchillas to a loud noise, which damaged the ipsilateral cochlea and induced degeneration in the glutamatergic cochlear

Selective vestibular ablation by KTP laser in endolymphatic hydrops.

OBJECTIVES AND HYPOTHESIS: Vertigo, the cause of disability in many patients with Ménière's disease, may be the result of the effects of endolymphatic hydrops on the semicircular canals. We hypothesize that intractable vertigo may be controlled by destruction of the semicircular canal neuroepithelium using visible light lasers without the need for extensive fenestration of the bony labyrinth. This study was designed to assess the cochlear effects of potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) laser-assisted triple semicircular canal ablation (TSCA) in endolymphatic hydrops. Inhalant allergy and Meniere's disease: Use of electrocochleography and intranasal allergen challenge as investigational tools.

INTRODUCTION: In an earlier study, we demonstrated the feasibility of using electrocochleography (ECoG) to document changes in inner ear function objectively after intranasal challenge of patients with inhalant allergy (with no prior immunotherapy) and Meniere's disease, using the antigen to which they were most sensitive. OBJECTIVE: We expand on this earlier study and continue to investigate the feasibility of this model in a subset of patients with inhalant allergy and Meniere's disease after immunotherapy. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study of 11 patients identified with both Meniere's disea

[Results and extraordinary complications of surgery for exostoses of the external auditory canal].

We present a retrospective study on 22 operations of exostosis of the external auditory canal in 20 patients. 8 patients were passionated by water sports. The most frequent indication for surgery (13 operations) was recurrent external otitis or ceruminal obstruction. In 7 cases the need for a wider access to the middle ear indicated surgery. Surgery was usually performed as an outpatient procedure, maximum hospitalization was 3 days. The mean healing period was 6 (3-10) weeks. Mean follow up was 43 (3-110) months. There were no severe intraoperative complications such as facial paresis, lesion

No Effects of Acute Alcohol Ingestion on Subjective Visual Horizontal Determination During Eccentric Rotation.

Evaluating the function of the vestibular part of the inner ear comprises more than the classic analysis of the lateral semicircular canal function. In healthy subjects, positional alcohol nystagmus may be seen after acute alcohol ingestion. Posturography has shown a deteriorated equilibrium after even moderate doses of alcohol, which speculatively could be an effect of otolith disturbance or a central integrative effect. We tested the possibility of an otolith effect by using linear acceleration in the lateral direction by means of eccentric rotation, stimulating mainly the outermost ear's ot

Cellular expression of GDNF mRNA suggests multiple functions inside and outside the nervous system.

Glial-cell-line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) is a distant member of the transforming growth factor-beta family and has potent neurotrophic effects on several classes of neurons including dopamine neurons and motoneurons. Here, we have used in situ hybridization to describe the development of the cellular expression of GDNF mRNA pre- and postnatally. Consistent with dopaminotrophic activity, GDNF mRNA is expressed in the developing basal ganglia and the olfactory tubercle. It is also found in a thalamic nucleus, in neurons of the substantia innominata, in the developing Purkinje neurons a

The nucleus magnocellularis in the red-eared turtle, Chrysemys scripta elegans: eighth nerve endings and neuronal types.

Eighth nerve endings and neuronal types in the nucleus magnocellularis were analyzed in the red-eared turtle (Chrysemys scripta elegans). One group of turtles had horseradish peroxidase (HRP) injected into the surgically exposed inner ear. Following injection the animals survived for 3-5 days and then their 8th nerve fibers and endings were analyzed. A second group of turtles were impregnated by the Golgi-Kopsch technique. This also demonstrated 8th nerve endings and neurons in the nucleus magnocellularis. A third group had brains stained with cresyl violet to demonstrate normal morphology. Tw
