Polymer composites from natural fibers and recycled waste surgical masks during COVID-19 pandemic.

The crucial role of face masks is highlighted in our day-to-day life during the COVID-19 pandemic. Polypropylene (PP)-based disposable face masks are widely used to hold back viral transmission. The discarded masks can create a huge burden of contamination on the environment. The purpose of this work is to recycle and reuse discarded masks to reduce environmental pollution. A simple and innovative technique to recycle surgical masks into composites of higher mechanical strength and antimicrobial properties is explored to reuse in packaging materials and cutleries. The surgical masks composed o

The Differential Phosphorylation-Dependent Signaling and Glucose Immunometabolic Responses Induced during Infection by Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Heidelberg in Chicken Macrophage-like cells.

Salmonella is a burden to the poultry, health, and food safety industries, resulting in illnesses, food contamination, and recalls. Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) is one of the most prevalent serotypes isolated from poultry. Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica Heidelberg (S. Heidelberg), which is becoming as prevalent as S. Enteritidis, is one of the five most isolated serotypes. Although S. Enteritidis and S. Heidelberg are almost genetically identical, they both are capable of inducing different immune and metabolic responses in host cells to success…

Species diversity and molecular analysis of Staphylococcus in confectioneries of a developing country, Iran.

Confectionery is one of the potential sources of contamination and transmission of gastrointestinal infections to humans. Staphylococcus species, and particularly the coagulase-positive ones, have the remarkable capability to produce high amounts of enterotoxin in food. In the present study, the frequency and diversity of Staphylococcus in confectioneries in Iran were assessed by using a combination of conventional and molecular methods. A total of 55 confection samples were collected from 30 confectioneries of Isfahan. They were analyzed for the presence of Staphylococcus using standard proto

Typhoid fever in Fiji: a reversible plague?

The country of Fiji, with a population of approximately 870 000 people, faces a growing burden of several communicable diseases including the bacterial infection typhoid fever. Surveillance data suggest that typhoid has become increasingly common in rural areas of Fiji and is more frequent amongst young adults. Transmission of the organisms that cause typhoid is facilitated by faecal contamination of food or water and may be influenced by local behavioural practices in Fiji. The Fijian Ministry of Health, with support from Australian Aid, hosted a meeting in August 2012 to develop comprehensiv

Amoebic dysentery.

INTRODUCTION: Amoebic dysentery is caused by the protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica. It is transmitted in areas where poor sanitation allows contamination of drinking water and food with faeces. In these areas, up to 40% of people with diarrhoea may have amoebic dysentery. METHODS AND OUTCOMES: We conducted a systematic review and aimed to answer the following clinical question: What are the effects of drug treatments for amoebic dysentery in endemic areas? We searched: Medline, Embase, The Cochrane Library, and other important databases up to April 2010 (Clinical Evidence reviews are u

Regulation of chicken contamination is urgently needed to control New Zealand's serious campylobacteriosis epidemic.

New Zealand's campylobacteriosis epidemic reached a new peak in May 2006 with the annualised national notification rate exceeding 400 per 100,000 for the first time, the highest national rate reported in the literature. The epidemic is estimated to cause at least 1 fatality a year, >800 hospitalisations, and >100,000 cases in the community, and cost the New Zealand economy 75 million dollars per annum. There is overwhelming epidemiological and laboratory evidence that fresh chicken is the dominant source of human infection. The seriousness of this epidemic justifies rapid, decisive action to r

Reprocessing Effectiveness for Flexible Ureteroscopes: A Critical Look at the Evidence.

Flexible ureteroscopes are essential devices, and reusable models require meticulous cleaning and sterilization between procedures. Reprocessing is complex, time-consuming, and difficult due to the instrument's small size, fragility, and internal channel. The Food and Drug Administration recently raised concerns about the effectiveness of ureteroscope reprocessing. Due to inadequate reprocessing and maintenance, contaminated and damaged ureteroscopes pose risks to patient safety. This review describes ureteroscope reprocessing methods and summarizes evidence on reprocessing effectiveness and d

Tularemia pneumonia.

Francisella tularensis is a zoonotic infection that can be acquired in multiple ways, including a bite from an arthropod, the handling of animal carcasses, consumption of contaminated food and water, or inhalation of infected particles. The most virulent subspecies of F tularensis is type A, which is almost exclusively seen in North America. Pneumonia can occur in tularemia, as either a primary process from direct inhalation, or as a secondary manifestation of ulceroglandular or typhoidal disease. This article describes the history of this infection, epidemiology, methods of diagnosis and trea

Neurocysticercosis: an old disease with new questions.

Cysticercosis is a parasitic infection of the central nervous system that occurs in some geographic regions and is transmitted through contaminated food or by the fecal-oral route. Treatment depends on the degree of central nervous system involvement. Ventricular cysts require surgery. Parenchymal involvement requires systemic antiparasitic therapy. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are used to image patients with neurocysticercosis. Magnetic resonance imaging is more sensitive for cerebral involvement than in computed tomography. Computed tomography is more sensitive to calci

Transferable mrkABCDF-bearing plasmids and benzalkonium bromide-lysozyme-based control of biofilms in multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli from food animals.

Strong biofilm-forming multidrug-resistant (MDR) Escherichia coli (E. coli) can persist on food-contact surfaces and contribute to contamination along the food production chain. In this study, we investigated the occurrence, genomic features, and plasmid transferability of strong biofilm-forming E. coli from food-producing animals and associated farm environments, and evaluated an approach for controlling their surface-associated biofilms. Among 536 isolates, 42 were classified as strong biofilm producers (7.84%, 42/536). The highest proportion was observed in pig-derived isolates (10.11%, 36/

Surveillance of veterinary drug residues in food commonly consumed in Singapore and assessment of dietary exposure.

Non-judicious and indiscriminate use of veterinary drugs in animal husbandry may result in accumulation of residues in animal tissues, and consequently in food for human consumption. The abuse of veterinary drugs presents a potential risk to consumer health, especially if the residue level is higher than the health-based guidance value (HBGV) such as the acceptable daily intake (ADI). Contamination of drug residues in food also promotes the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) which poses a serious threat to public health globally. There has been limited information on the occurrence an

Antimicrobial Resistance and Virulence Gene Profiles of Methicillin-Resistant and -Susceptible Staphylococcus aureus From Food Products in Denmark.

Foods may potentially serve as vehicles for the transmission of antimicrobial-resistant variants of Staphylococcus aureus that are important in a human clinical context. Further, retail food products can be a cause of staphylococcal food poisoning. For these reasons and to account for source attribution and risk assessment, detailed information on the population structure, resistance, and virulence profiles of S. aureus originating from retail food products is necessary. In the current study, whole-genome sequences from 88 S. aureus isolates were subjected to bioinformatics analyses in relatio

Hepatotoxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids induce DNA damage response in rat liver in a 28-day feeding study.

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA) are secondary plant metabolites that occur as food and feed contaminants. Acute and subacute PA poisoning can lead to severe liver damage in humans and animals, comprising liver pain, hepatomegaly and the development of ascites due to occlusion of the hepatic sinusoids (veno-occlusive disease). Chronic exposure to low levels of PA can induce liver cirrhosis and liver cancer. However, it is not well understood which transcriptional changes are induced by PA and whether all hepatotoxic PA, regardless of their structure, induce similar responses. Therefore, a 28-day s
