Interactive Voice Response Calls to Promote Smoking Cessation after Hospital Discharge: Pooled Analysis of Two Randomized Clinical Trials.

BACKGROUND: Hospitalization offers smokers an opportunity to quit smoking. Starting cessation treatment in hospital is effective, but sustaining treatment after discharge is a challenge. Automated telephone calls with interactive voice response (IVR) technology could support treatment continuance after discharge. OBJECTIVE: To assess smokers' use of and satisfaction with an IVR-facilitated intervention and to test the relationship between intervention dose and smoking cessation. DESIGN: Analysis of pooled quantitative and qualitative data from the intervention groups of two similar randomize

Facilitating advance care planning in oncology: study protocol for the evaluation of a tailored implementation of an advance care planning tool (the INDEED study).

BACKGROUND: Advance care planning (ACP) improves patient outcomes, but integration of ACP in daily practice for patients with cancer in hospitals remains suboptimal. Systematic implementation of tools to facilitate ACP could overcome the barriers for ACP. In this study we will evaluate the multifaceted tailored implementation of a digital ACP tool embedded in the electronic health record (EHR) in daily clinical cancer care. We will analyse the implementation process, its effect on use of the ACP tool, and the impact of use of the tool on healthcare use and healthcare costs. METHODS: We will p

Assessing the effects of local economic activities on stream ecosystem services across cities with contrasting urban development histories.

This study compared urban streams in two cities in central Portugal that have contrasting urban development histories to investigate how ecosystem services are associated with the local economic activities. For this purpose, we identified the predominant local economic activities in two cities in central Portugal, Aveiro and Coimbra, and selected thirty urban streams for assessment. The streams were evaluated based on the degree of urbanization, measured through impervious surface coverage (IMD), and several indicators of provisioning, regulating, and cultural services, using the Urban Stream

Sexual dysfunction in bipolar disorder: A systematic review.

Bipolar disorder (BD) involves sexual disturbances not only during affective phases but also during euthymia. Sexual dysfunctions (SD) in BD are particularly relevant, as they may negatively affect quality of life and treatment adherence. Despite their clinical impact, SD are often misdiagnosed and their characteristics remain unclear. This work aimed to review the literature on SD in patients with BD. A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines (PROSPERO ID-CRD42019130095). We included naturalistic studies of adults with BD in which sexual functioning was assessed using ques

Podcast Episode 3: How Can Physicians Work Collaboratively to Improve Cardiovascular Outcomes in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes?

Heart failure is a common and often underappreciated complication of type 2 diabetes. Patients with type 2 diabetes frequently have multiple interconnected comorbidities, including hypertension, chronic kidney disease, and obesity, which can culminate in cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome. Effective management of cardiovascular complications in patients with type 2 diabetes requires a comprehensive, coordinated approach to optimize treatment plans and improve overall patient care. Collaborative care models, involving multidisciplinary teams, can significantly improve patient outcomes by

Arrest discretion and training needs for interacting with people with substance use disorders: a qualitative secondary analysis among police recruits in Washington State.

BACKGROUND: Frequent interactions between law enforcement and individuals with substance use disorders carry significant public health implications. Pre-arrest diversion programs rely on officer discretion to redirect individuals toward a range of medical and social services rather than make an arrest. To inform more effective evidence-based training, this study examines how police recruits anticipate exercising this discretion and identifies their self-reported training needs for navigating encounters with this population. RESULTS: A qualitative thematic analysis of open-ended survey response

Frailty Screening in the Emergency Department Enables Personalized Multidisciplinary Care for Geriatric Trauma Patients.

Frailty is a multidomain reduction in physiologic reserve that impacts recovery and can contribute to poor outcomes following trauma beyond what chronological age, comorbidities, or injury severity predicts. In geriatric trauma patients, a large proportion are frail or prefrail on initial encounter in the emergency department, and because there are opportunities for actionable management plans, major trauma guidelines endorse systematic screening integrated into coordinated geriatric trauma care. We reviewed the literature and identified practical instruments used in the acute trauma setting f

Deciding between conservative kidney management and dialysis in older people with kidney failure: a narrative review.

The global population is ageing, and chronic kidney disease is becoming more common. As a result, increasing numbers of older adults with multimorbidity and frailty are progressing to kidney failure. This requires all healthcare professionals involved in the care of people with kidney failure to be able to provide careful guidance with regards to available treatment options. Choosing a treatment pathway for frail patients may be challenging, particularly for those considered ineligible for kidney transplantation. For such individuals, the remaining options are dialysis and conservative kidney

Spatial equity-oriented accessibility assessment and optimal allocation of older adult care facilities in Beijing's central urban area.

INTRODUCTION: Population aging is a pressing global public health challenge. In aging-concentrated urban central areas, accelerated population aging has worsened the mismatch between supply and demand, irrational spatial layout, and inadequate accessibility of older adult care resources. METHODS: To improve public service equity, this study took Beijing's central urban area as the research object. Using data from the 2018 Beijing Special Census on Targeted Assistance for older adults and the 2020 Full-Coverage Census of older adult care Facilities, facility accessibility was evaluated using a
