Effect of Deep Learning Reconstruction on Evaluating Cervical Spinal Canal Stenosis With Computed Tomography.

OBJECTIVE: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is commonly used to evaluate cervical spinal canal stenosis; however, some patients are ineligible for MRI. We aimed to assess the effect of deep learning reconstruction (DLR) in evaluating cervical spinal canal stenosis using computed tomography (CT) compared with hybrid iterative reconstruction (hybrid IR). METHODS: This retrospective study included 33 patients (16 male patients; mean age, 57.7 ± 18.4 years) who underwent cervical spine CT. Images were reconstructed using DLR and hybrid IR. In the quantitative analyses, noise was recorded by placi

Identification of distinct immune landscapes using an automated nine-color multiplex immunofluorescence staining panel and image analysis in paraffin tumor tissues.

Immune profiling is becoming a vital tool for identifying predictive and prognostic markers for translational studies. The study of the tumor microenvironment (TME) in paraffin tumor tissues such as malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) could yield insights to actionable targets to improve patient outcome. Here, we optimized and tested a new immune-profiling method to characterize immune cell phenotypes in paraffin tissues and explore the co-localization and spatial distribution between the immune cells within the TME and the stromal or tumor compartments. Tonsil tissues and tissue microarray (

Machine Learning-Based Differentiation of Nontuberculous Mycobacteria Lung Disease and Pulmonary Tuberculosis Using CT Images.

An increasing number of patients infected with nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are observed worldwide. However, it is challenging to identify NTM lung diseases from pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) due to considerable overlap in classic manifestations and clinical and radiographic characteristics. This study quantifies both cavitary and bronchiectasis regions in CT images and explores a machine learning approach for the differentiation of NTM lung diseases and PTB. It involves 116 patients and 103 quantitative features. After the selection of informative features, a linear support vector machine

Effectiveness of transfer learning for enhancing tumor classification with a convolutional neural network on frozen sections.

Fast and accurate confirmation of metastasis on the frozen tissue section of intraoperative sentinel lymph node biopsy is an essential tool for critical surgical decisions. However, accurate diagnosis by pathologists is difficult within the time limitations. Training a robust and accurate deep learning model is also difficult owing to the limited number of frozen datasets with high quality labels. To overcome these issues, we validated the effectiveness of transfer learning from CAMELYON16 to improve performance of the convolutional neural network (CNN)-based classification model on our frozen

CT of Kidney Volume in Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease: Accuracy, Reproducibility, and Radiation Dose.

Background Total kidney volume (TKV) assessment is valuable in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) but the reference standard method of MRI planimetry requires access to MRI and time-consuming interpretation. Purpose To determine whether accurate TKV measurements comparable to the resource-intensive reference standard of MRI planimetry can be obtained by using alternate methods including dose-reducing CT protocols and time-saving measurement equations. Materials and Methods In this prospective study conducted September 2016 to June 2017, adult participants with ADPKD underwent

Multiphase computed tomography for localization of parathyroid disease in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism: How many phases do we really need?

BACKGROUND: Multiphase computed tomography (CT) involves multiple cervical CT acquisitions to accurately identify hyperfunctional parathyroid glands, thus increasing radiation exposure to the patient. We hypothesized that only 2 cervical acquisitions, instead of the conventional 4, would provide equivalent localization information and halve the radiation exposure. METHODS: We identified 53 consecutive patients with primary hyperparathyroidism who underwent multiphase CT before parathyroidectomy. All scans were reinterpreted first using 2 phases then using all 4 phases. The accuracies of inter

Progression of ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament of the thoracic spine following posterior decompression and stabilization.

OBJECT: Despite its potential clinical impact, information regarding progression of thoracic ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) is scarce. Posterior decompression with stabilization is currently the primary surgical treatment for symptomatic thoracic OPLL; however, it remains unclear whether thoracic OPLL increases in size following spinal stabilization. It is also unknown whether patients' clinical symptoms worsen as OPLL size increases. In this retrospective case series study, the authors examined the postoperative progression of thoracic OPLL. METHODS: Nine consecut
