A 41-year-old Japanese woman with lipoprotein glomerulopathy is reported. The patient presented with nephrotic syndrome, hyperlipoproteinemia and an increased level of plasma Apo E. The damaged glomeruli showed various degrees of capillary dilatation and accumulation of some material-often showing stratification, along with mesangial proliferation and mesangial interposition. A 17-year-old male presented with nephrotic syndrome associated with microscopic hematuria. Renal biopsy showed only minor glomerular abnormalities (light microscopy). Immunohistology demonstrated strong mesangial deposition of IgA. Electronmicroscopy disclosed widespread effacement of foot processes in combination with isolated osmiophilic mesangial deposits. INTRODUCTION: The superficial pineal gland of the Sprague Dawley rat is a neuroendocrine structure secreting the hormone melatonin. By use of block face scanning electron microscopy, our aim here was to identify the 3-dimensional ultrastructure of the gland.
METHODS: A series of 2,731 block face images of the rat pineal tissue, 30 nm in thickness, was obtained in a Teneo volume scanning electron microscope and used for 3-dimensional reconstruction by use of the TrakEM2-plugin in the ImageJ software.
