Flexure-Based Locking Plates Can Modulate Interfragmentary Motion in Distal Femur and Diaphyseal Fractures: A Parametric Finite Element Analysis.

Axial interfragmentary motion is known to stimulate fracture healing. A mechanically compliant fracture fixation plate incorporating flexures is proposed to provide controlled axial micromotion to long bone fractures. To explore the concept's feasibility, computational modeling of general diaphyseal and distal femur fractures treated with both rigid and compliant plates is conducted. In Part I of this study, a diaphyseal fracture finite element model for novel compliant plates is validated against experimental data with good agreement. In Part II, a parametric analysis is conducted using the v…

Thoracic joint abnormalities and impaired thoracic motion in idiopathic pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis: an exploratory study using inspiratory and expiratory CT.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis (IPPFE) is a rare interstitial lung disease characterized by restricted ventilation and upper-lobe fibroelastosis. Historically, ankylosing spondylitis has been implicated in upper-lobe fibrosis and ventilatory impairment due to chest wall restriction, and impaired thoracic motion has recently been appreciated in IPPFE. We hypothesized that thoracic joint abnormalities (costovertebral, manubriosternal, and sternocostal joints) contribute to the impaired thoracic motion in patients with IPPFE. METHODS: Seventeen patients with IPPFE and 15…

Protrusive mandibular kinematics in anterior disc displacement: a CT-based 3D motion analysis before and after occlusal splint therapy.

Temporomandibular disorders are associated with altered mandibular mechanics, yet quantitative descriptions of protrusive joint kinematics remain limited. This study quantified protrusive mandibular kinematics in patients with anterior disc displacement with reduction (ADDwR), with and without osteoarthritis (ADDwR&OA), and evaluated changes after occlusal splint therapy using subject-specific three-dimensional analysis. Twenty-four participants were included (12 healthy controls, 6 ADDwR, 6 ADDwR&OA). Mandibular protrusion was recorded using motion capture and integrated with CT-based three-d…

A Motion-Feature-Informed Dynamic Visual Design Protocol for Translating Embodied Tai Chi Knowledge into Intangible Cultural Heritage Communication.

This protocol describes a reproducible workflow for translating embodied Tai Chi movements into dynamic visual designs to support the communication of movement-based intangible cultural heritage. As a movement-based cultural practice, Tai Chi conveys knowledge through bodily rhythm, trajectory, weight transfer, and balance, aspects that are often difficult to communicate using conventional static or video-based media. The protocol integrates markerless motion capture, motion-feature extraction, and rule-based visual mapping to transform movement characteristics into dynamic visual representati…

Comparison of lower limb kinematic and kinetic estimation during athlete jumping between markerless and marker-based motion capture systems.

Markerless motion capture (ML) systems, which utilize deep learning algorithms, have significantly expanded the applications of biomechanical analysis. Jump tests are now essential tools for athlete monitoring and injury prevention. However, the validity of kinematic and kinetic parameters derived from ML for lower limb joints requires further validation in populations engaged in high-intensity jumping sports. The purpose of this study was to compare lower limb kinematic and kinetic estimates between marker-based (MB) and ML motion capture systems during jumps. Fourteen male Division I movemen…

Evaluation of skeletal muscle microcirculation via magnetic resonance intravoxel incoherent motion perfusion imaging in an acute ischemia rabbit model.

BACKGROUND: Acute limb ischemia (ALI) necessitates prompt intervention to prevent severe complications such as amputation. Current clinical assessments lack reliable quantitative methods for gauging skeletal muscle ischemia severity. Intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) perfusion imaging is a noninvasive approach for quantifying microvascular perfusion. We aimed to assess microcirculation alterations in rabbit vastus lateralis muscle following acute ischemia using IVIM. METHODS: Acute ischemia models were established in 25 New Zealand white rabbits through arterial ligation of their right hind…

Real-time respiratory motion forecasting with online learning of recurrent neural networks for accurate targeting in externally guided radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In lung radiotherapy, infrared cameras can track reflective objects on the chest to estimate tumor motion due to breathing. However, treatment system latencies hinder radiation beam precision. Real-time recurrent learning (RTRL), the conventional online learning approach for training recurrent neural networks (RNNs), is a potential solution that can learn patterns within non-stationary respiratory data but has high complexity. This research assesses the capabilities of resource-efficient online algorithms for RNNs-unbiased online recurrent optimization (UORO), sparse …

High-Performance Mechano-Sensitive Piezoelectric Nanogenerator from Post-Treated Nylon-11,11 Textiles for Energy Harvesting and Human Motion Monitoring.

Piezoelectric polymer textiles offer distinct advantages in the fabrication of wearable nanogenerators (NGs). One effective strategy to enhance the output capacity of NGs is to modulate the piezoelectric performance of the textiles. This paper focuses on further improving the piezoelectric properties of nylon-11,11 textiles through post-drawing and annealing treatments. We elucidate the evolution of morphology and the ferroelectric phase in the submicron/nanoscale fibers during post processing as well as the corresponding changes in performance. The drawing process primarily enhances the orien
