Prevalence of Chronic Illness and Risk Factors for Chronic Illness Among Patients With Venous Leg Ulceration: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Introduction. Chronic illness and risk factors for chronic illness are rising public health concerns for individuals and health care systems. Individuals with venous leg ulceration (VLU) have at least one chronic illness. As there is a projected increase in VLU prevalence there is a need to determine concurrent prevalence of risk factors for chronic illness among this population. Methods. A cross-sectional design conducted in 8 community, nurse-led, leg ulcer clinics. Results. Fifty patients (58%, n = 29 females) were enrolled. Seventy percent were >65 years old; 90% had at least one chronic i

The real costs of acromegaly: analysis of different therapies.

Acromegaly is a rare, chronic condition caused by growth hormone (GH) overproduction, usually due to a benign tumour of the pituitary gland. During the disease many complications occur, including cardiovascular disease and changes in the musculoskeletal, respiratory, and endocrine systems. Treatment includes surgery, medical therapy, and radiation. In this paper a literature review was conducted for information related to costs of management of acromegaly and its associated comorbidities using PubMed.The majority of total costs represent pharmacological treatment, especially the most common so

Distinguishing between post-trauma pituitary stalk disruption and genetic pituitary stalk interruption syndrome - case presentation and literature overview.

An Italian multidisciplinary team of pain management experts reviewed ibuprofen and paracetamol in combination for acute pain. Effective treatment of acute pain should target both inflammation and pain signaling to reduce suffering and prevent the development of persistent pain. The combination of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and paracetamol appears to be a logical choice: paracetamol primarily acts centrally, while NSAIDs inhibit the inflammation that perpetuates the pain response. Both drugs are rapidly absorbed, reaching maximal concentrations within 1-2 hours. Coadministr

Current status and recent advances on the use of ultrasonography in pediatric rheumatic diseases.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasonography has become a useful tool in the clinical rheumatology settings in the last two decades, but its use has only recently been explored by pediatric rheumatologists. The aim of this article is to review the literature on the current status and recent advances on the use of ultrasound in pediatric rheumatic diseases. DATA SOURCES: We have retrieved and reviewed the relevant articles from MEDLINE/PubMed databases published so far, on the applications of ultrasound in juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), systemic lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis, enthesitis, Sjogren's

Severe Disabling Myalgia as an Initial Presentation of Polyarteritis Nodosa.

BACKGROUND: Polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) is a form of necrotizing vasculitis affecting medium or small blood vessels with multiorgan involvement. Although myalgia is a clinical feature of PAN, severe disabling myalgia as the initial presentation is rarely noted. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of 54-year-old male with recently detected chronic kidney disease admitted with progressive severe disabling muscular pains predominantly over calves with constitutional symptoms for seven weeks. He was weak to mobilize out of the bed. Later, he developed a vasculitic rash, unilateral ulnar claw, and

Post-traumatic stress disorder in Italy: a comprehensive evaluation of all the ICD comorbidities and gender-related differences.

OBJECTIVES: The association between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and medical comorbidities is controversial since most studies focu … ged on symptom severity/duration and age at the event. Metabolic (39.29%), circulatory (20.24%) and musculoskeletal systems/connective tissue diseases (17.86%) were the most frequent comorbidities. Metabolic/circulatory diseases were more frequent among males (p = 0.019 and p = 0.027, respectively) while females more frequently showed neoplasms (p = 0.039). Physical com …

Guidelines for management of rheumatic diseases in developing countries from basics to real-world situation: relevance, need, and processes for development.

Guidelines or recommendations help to provide uniform standards in medical practice. The development of guidelines requires adherence to pre-defined norms prescribed by different international organizations such as the European League against Rheumatism (EULAR). We searched Pubmed and LILACS to identify published papers in five major rheumatic diseases (rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, spondyloarthropathies, osteoarthritis, and scleroderma) from different countries based on their economic prosperity and could find a lack of published literature from most economically weaker

[Autoimmune reactions to immune checkpoint inhibitors].

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) have dramatically changed the face of cancer treatment and are gaining in importance. The ICIs have now been approved for the treatment of advanced cancers, including melanoma, non-small-cell and small cell lung cancers, renal cell carcinoma, Hodgkin's lymphoma, head and neck cancers and urothelial carcinoma and further indications are to be expected. The organs most affected by an autoimmune reaction are the intestines, the musculoskeletal system, skin, endocrine organs, the liver and the lungs. As the indications for immune checkpoint blockade expand and IC…

Associated anomalies in cases with anotia and microtia.

Infants with anotia and microtia (AM) often have other non-AM associated congenital anomalies. The purpose of this investigation was to assess the prevalence and the types of these associated anomalies in a defined population. The associated anomalies in infants with AM were collected in all livebirths, stillbirths and terminations of pregnancy during 29 years in 387,067 consecutive births in the area covered by our population-based registry of congenital malformations. Of the 146 cases with AM registered during this period, representing a prevalence of 3.77 per 10,000, 49.3% had associated an

Ground reaction forces are more sensitive gait measures than temporal parameters in rodents following rotator cuff injury.

Gait analysis is a quantitative, non-invasive technique that can be used to investigate functional changes in animal models of musculoskeletal disease. Changes in ground reaction forces following injury have been observed that coincide with differences in tissue mechanical and histological properties during healing. However, measurement of these kinetic gait parameters can be laborious compared to the simpler and less time-consuming analysis of temporal gait parameters alone. We compared the sensitivity of temporal and kinetic gait parameters in detecting functional changes following rotator c

The prevalence of fibromyalgia among patients with hepatitis B virus infection.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a syndrome characterized by widespread and chronic musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, morning stiffness, and sleep disturbance. However, the etiopathogenesis of FM remains unclear. Various etiological factors have been suggested to trigger FM. These include systemic rheumatismal disease, physical trauma, psychological disorders, and chronic infections. We determined the prevalence of FM in patients with chronic active hepatitis B virus (HBV) and inactive hepatitis B carriers, compared with matched healthy controls. Seventy-seven HBV patients (39 HBV carriers and 38 with chroni

Development and validation of a discretised multi-body spine model in LifeMOD for biodynamic behaviour simulation.

This paper presents a discretised musculoskeletal multi-body spine model using the LifeMOD Biomechanics Modeller. This was obtained by refining spine segments in cervical, thoracic and lumbar regions into individual vertebra segments, using rotational joints representing the intervertebral discs, building various ligaments between vertebrae and implementing necessary lumbar muscles. To validate the model, two comparison studies were made with in vivo intradiscal pressure measurements of the L4-L5 disc as well as extension moments, axial force and shear force around L5-S1 obtained from spine mo
