[Ipsilateral femoral neck fracture after fixation of intertrochanteric fracture by InterTAN intramedullary nail: A case report].

Hip fractures are common in elderly patients and are associated with significant morbidity and mortality, often referred to as the "last fracture of life". These fractures frequently result in a loss of functional independence. Evidence suggests that early surgical intervention can reduce mortality. The selection of treatment modality should take into account factors such as the type of fracture, the patient' s age, and overall health status. This case report discusses an 88-year-old female patient who sustained an unstable intertrochanteric fracture of the left femur following a fall. She und

Intramedullary nailing versus plate fixation for the treatment of proximal tibia extra-articular fractures: a meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: The incidence of proximal tibia extra-articular fractures is fairly common accounting for approximately 5-11% of all tibia fractures (Lang in Clin Orthop Relat Res 315:64-74, 1995; Freedman in Clin Orthop Relat Res 315:25-33, 1995). The optimal treatment method for these fractures between intramedullary nailing and proximal locking plate remains equivocal. The purpose of this meta-analysis is to assess the clinical, radiological, and functional outcomes as well as the complications in adult patients with extra-articular proximal tibia fractures treated with IMN or PLP. Outcomes of Intramedullary Nailing Versus Plate Fixation of Humerus Shaft Fractures: A Single-Center Retrospective Study.

The optimal fixation method for humeral shaft fractures remains a topic of debate. Intramedullary nailing (IM nailing) and plate fixation are the most common surgical options, each with distinct advantages and complications. This study aimed to compare the functional outcomes and complications associated with IM nailing and plating fixation for humeral shaft fractures at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital. This retrospective cohort study included adults who underwent humeral shaft fracture fixation from January 2012 to December 2022. Patients were treated with either IM nailing or plate fixatio

[Soft tissue protecting operative treatment of complex ankle fractures in elderly patients using fibular nailing].

The incidence of ankle fractures in older patients shows a clear upward trend. However, their proper treatment is often challenging and may be associated with a high complication rate. The primary reasons for the increased complication rate can be attributed to the specific characteristics of the patient population, such as frequently complex morbidities, weakened bone structure, and less than optimal soft tissue conditions. These problems are more likely to arise with standard invasive operative methods, such as plate osteosynthesis, which can have a pronounced negative impact on the already

Threaded rods versus arthrodesis nail as a static spacer for two-stage revision total knee arthroplasty.

INTRODUCTION: A spacer is required to maintain limb length and alignment and to provide a stable limb for mobilisation in two-stage revision total knee arthroplasty (rTKA) for periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). Static spacers are indicated in cases of massive bone loss, compromised soft tissues, and ligamentous and/or extensor mechanism insufficiency. The aim of this study was to compare the use of Ilizarov rods to arthrodesis nails for static spacer constructs in first-stage rTKA for PJI. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of 40 patients who underwent two-stage rTKA for PJI be…

Pathological fracture of the humeral shaft: Antegrade intramedullary nailing versus plate osteosynthesis with bone defect cementation.

PurposeClinically, metastatic pathological fractures of the humeral shaft remain a challenging issue. Plate osteosynthesis and intramedullary nailing are common fixation methods; however, the optimal strategy remains debated, especially in patients with limited life expectancy where surgical goals include rapid pain relief, functional recovery, and fewer reoperations.MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed 27 patients with metastatic humeral shaft fractures treated surgically during 2009-2019. Patients were grouped by plate osteosynthesis (n = 17) and antegrade intramedullary nailing (n = 10), and

Focal Pigmented Squamous Cell Carcinoma (pSCC) In Situ of the Nail: A Rare Case Emphasizing Diagnostic Vigilance.

Pigmented squamous cell carcinoma (pSCC) of the nail unit is an uncommon condition that can mimic benign entities. Clinically, pSCC can present as longitudinal melanonychia, onycholysis, or verrucous plaques, potentially leading to diagnostic delays. The pigmented variant is particularly challenging to diagnose, as it may be mistaken for benign melanocytic lesions. Histologically, pSCC demonstrates atypical keratinocyte proliferation with pigmentation, and immunohistochemical analysis is crucial to exclude melanocytic involvement. This case report describes a 25-year-old immunocompetent female

Femoral Nailing in a Porcine Model Causes Bone Marrow Emboli in the Lungs and Systemic Emboli in the Heart and Brain.

BACKGROUND: Shaft fractures of the femur are commonly treated with intramedullary nailing, which can release bone marrow emboli into the bloodstream. Emboli can travel to the lungs, impairing gas exchange and causing inflammation. Occasionally, emboli traverse from the pulmonary to the systemic circulation, hindering perfusion and resulting in injuries such as heart and brain infarctions, known as fat embolism syndrome. We studied the extent of systemic bone marrow embolization in a pig model. METHODS: Twelve anesthetized pigs underwent bilateral intramedullary nailing of the femur, while 3 a

Surface material analysis for human papillomavirus detection in nail Bowen's disease caused by HPV type 58.

Over the past few years, cases of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in nail Bowen's disease have been reported. This disease presents diagnostic challenges due to its similarity to nail malignant melanoma, particularly with respect to the clinical manifestation of black nail streaks. While skin biopsy is usually employed for diagnosis, it is an invasive procedure. We report the case of a 52-year-old healthy Japanese male with a pigmented streak on the nail of the fourth finger of his right hand, which had extended from the central to the lateral nail fold within 4 months. Dermoscopic examin
