The Healer's Wound: Personal Injury, Identity, and Ethical Responsibility in Orthopedic Surgery.

Orthopedic surgeons dedicate their careers to treating musculoskeletal injury, yet when they become patients, professional culture discourages disclosure, treats help-seeking as weakness, and provides no structured pathway to care without career consequence. This narrative review examines the ethical dimensions of surgeon injury through two complementary concepts drawn from Jungian psychology: the wounded healer archetype and shadow integration. We searched PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar from January 1975 to May 2026 for literature on the physician as patient, occupational injury and burno

Social experiences of people living with Parkinson's disease in Ireland: A qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms, compromising people with PD's (PwP) quality of life and psychological well-being, which may be compounded by stigma. We sought to explore the social experiences of PwP in Ireland, including the role of stigma. METHODS: Twenty-one people with PD were recruited through purposeful and snowball sampling. Data were collected through 30-50 min face-to-face or virtual semi-structured interviews. The interview explored PwP's symptoms, psychosocial experiences, and support needed in th

Implementation of Ambulatory Kidney Supportive Care in a Safety Net Hospital.

CONTEXT: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) disproportionately impacts lower socioeconomic groups and is associated with many symptoms and complex decisions. Integration of Kidney Supportive Care (KSC) with CKD care can address these needs. To our knowledge, this approach has not been described in an underserved population. OBJECTIVES: We describe our adaptation of an ambulatory integrated KSC and CKD clinic for implementation in a safety net hospital. We report our utilization metrics; characteristics of the population served; and visit activities. METHODS: We considered modifications from the pe

A new guide for basic psychological support for persons affected by neglected tropical diseases: A peer support tool suitable for persons with a diagnosis of leprosy and lymphatic filariasis.

BACKGROUND: People with disabilities due to neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), such as leprosy and lymphatic filariasis (LF), often encounter situations of stigma and discrimination that significantly impact their mental wellbeing. Mental wellbeing services are often not available at the peripheral level in NTD-endemic countries, and there is a need for such services. Basic psychological support for persons with NTDs (BPS-N) from peers is an important potential solution for addressing mental wellbeing problems. As there was no written document advising delivery of such support, NLR India brou

Self-management needs, strategies and support for individuals with sickle cell disease in developing countries: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Sickle cell disease (SCD) poses a significant global health burden, particularly affecting individuals in developing countries with constrained healthcare resources. While research on self-management in the context of SCD is emerging, it has predominantly focused on primary studies. The aim of the scoping review was to identify and map self-management needs of individuals living with SCD, the strategies they employed to meet those needs, and the support interventions available to them. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The review was conducted following the Askey and O'Malley's framework to

Orthopaedic and trauma surgery in the time of COVID-19 in France: A nationwide survey.

INTRODUCTION: The year 2020 was marked by the COVID-19 pandemic. The entire French health system was mobilized. Surgical services were asked to reschedule all elective procedures. We wondered about the impact of this pandemic on French orthopaedic surgeons. The main objective of this survey was to assess the impact of COVID-19 on emergency and non-emergency orthopaedic surgical activities. The secondary objectives were: to report how orthopaedic surgeons had mobilized and reorganized, and to assess the physical and psychological consequences on their state of health. HYPOTHESIS: The COVID-19

Psychological factors in adherence to COVID-19 public health restrictions in Italy: A path model testing depressed mood, anxiety, and co-rumination via cellphone.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the success of major non-pharmaceutical interventions, such as quarantine orders, has depended upon robust rates of citizens' adherence to protocols. Thus, it is critical to public health for research to illuminate factors that affect compliance with contagion-mitigating practices. Previous research has examined sociodemographic factors and aspects of psychological distress as correlates of adherence to public health guidelines. The current study expanded this research to investigate the psychosocial process of co-rumination, which has been identified in previous

A Novel Stress State Assessment Method for College Students Based on EEG.

Stress is an unavoidable problem for today's college students. Stress can arouse strong personal emotional and behavioral responses. Compared with other groups of the same age, college students have a special way of life and living environment. They have complex interpersonal relationships and relatively weak social support systems. At the same time, they also face fierce competition in both academic and employment. However, they lack the skills to deal with the crisis and are reluctant to ask others for help, which leads to a simultaneous increase in mental stress. The pressure on college stu

Psychosocial stress induction in vivo vs. in virtuo and the influence of a health app on the acute stress reaction in youths: a study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Acute and everyday stress is substantial for the development of mental and physical diseases, therefore it is crucial to get a better understanding of its pathogenesis. Different methods (e.g., Ambulatory Assessment) and stress reactivity paradigms (e.g., Trier Social Stress Test / TSST) in laboratory settings are often used to investigate basic mechanisms of this process. Due to the technological progress of the last years and especially due to children and adolescents growing up with it, the application of these developments in clinical research is reasonable. The aim of this pro

Identifying disrupted biological factors and patient-tailored interventions for chronic fatigue in adolescents and young adults with Q-Fever Fatigue Syndrome, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (QFS-study): study protocol for a randomized controlled trial with single-subject experimental case series design.

BACKGROUND: Chronic fatigue with a debilitating effect on daily life is a frequently reported symptom among adolescents and young adults with a history of Q-fever infection (QFS). Persisting fatigue after infection may have a biological origin with psychological and social factors contributing to the disease phenotype. This is consistent with the biopsychosocial framework, which considers fatigue to be the result of a complex interaction between biological, psychological, and social factors. In line, similar manifestations of chronic fatigue are observed in chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic enc

Pain and Injury in Elite Adolescent Irish Dancers: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Dance is an extremely popular activity among adolescents and has a range of associated physical and psychological health benefits. However, pain and injury in young elite dancers is pervasive, and the underlying risk factors are poorly understood. This study investigated the incidence of pain and injury in elite adolescent Irish dancers and examined a range of potentially associated biopsychosocial risk factors. Thirty-seven championship level Irish dancers completed baseline questionnaires recording any episode of pain or injury over the previous 12 months. Additionally, dancers provided info

Intimate partner violence and receptive syringe sharing among women who inject drugs in Indonesia: A respondent-driven sampling study.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) and HIV are overlapping public health problems that disproportionately affect women who inject drugs. Little is known about the relationship between IPV and HIV-related unsafe injecting practices among women in low- and middle-income settings. This study investigated whether IPV victimisation was associated with receptive syringe sharing among women who inject drugs in Indonesia. METHODS: Respondent-driven sampling (RDS) was used to recruit 731 women aged 18+ years, injecting drugs in the preceding 12 months, and residing in Greater Jakarta or Bandu

The Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression (CES-D) scale measures a continuum from well-being to depression: Testing two key predictions of positive clinical psychology.

BACKGROUND: Two core but untested predictions of Positive Clinical Psychology (PCP) are that (1) Many psychiatric problems can be understood as one end of bipolar continua with well-being, and (2) that reducing psychiatric symptoms will provide an equal (near linear) decrease in risk for several other psychiatric variables, irrespective of position on continua. AIMS: We test these predictions in relation to a purported well-being/depression continuum, as measured by the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression (CES-D), a popular measure of depressive experiences in research and clinical pr

[Pre- and post-operative information for the laryngectomized patient: verification of the validity of a brochure].

For those patients who are candidates for total laryngectomy, therapy is not terminated upon surgery and subsequent speech therapy. Treatment must, instead, take into consideration numerous, important psychological problems which arise upon learning the diagnosis and the need for radical surgery. Therefore, all those who come into contact with the patient during the different phases of disease (i.e. the surgeon, ward nurses, speech therapists) must all be made sensitive to such problems. At times the participation of a psychologist is required. Detailed information on both the temporary and pe

The Relative Operating Characteristic in Psychology: A technique for isolating effects of response bias finds wide use in the study of perception and cognition.

The clinician looking, listening, or feeling for signs of a disease may far prefer a false alarm to a miss, particularly if the disease is serious and contagious. On the other hand, he may believe that the available therapy is marginally effective, expensive, and debilitating. The pilot seeing the landing lights only when they are a few yards away may decide that his plane is adequately aligned with the runway if he is alone and familiar with that plight. He may be more inclined to circle the field before another try at landing if he has many passengers and recent memory of another plane crash
