Cerebral veins have received increasing attention due to their importance in preoperational planning and the brain oxygenation measurement. There are different modalities to image those vessels, such as magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) and recently, contrast-enhanced (CE) 3D gradient-echo sequences. However, the current techniques have certain disadvantages, i.e., the long examination time, the requirement of contrast agents or inability to measure oxygenation. Near-infrared optical tomography (NIROT) is emerging as a viable new biomedical imaging modality that employs near infrared light

Pneumonia is a common respiratory infection that affects the lungs. Lung ultrasound (LUS) is a portable, cost-effective imaging method, which is free of ionizing radiation and has been shown to be useful for evaluating pneumonia. The aim of this retrospective analytical study was to determine the association between lung ultrasound patterns and pneumonia. For the purpose of performing the required analysis, LUS patterns including consolidations, pleural line irregularities, A lines and B lines from 90 subjects (44 patients with confirmed pneumonia and 46 controls) were retrieved from a publish

Trauma is an important cause of mortality, particularly in the young. While computed tomography (CT) is the mainstay of body imaging in the setting of trauma, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging can be useful in stable patients. Although more commonly used in spinal and musculoskeletal trauma, MR also has a role in abdominopelvic trauma. Broadly, its uses include clarification of equivocal cases, monitoring complications of trauma, particularly with solid organ injury, or as a primary imaging modality for patients with low suspicion for injury for whom avoiding ionizing radiation is a priority-nam

Heat shock proteins (HSPs) are conservative and ubiquitous proteins that are expressed both in prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms and play an important role in cellular homeostasis, including the regulation of proteostasis, apoptosis, autophagy, maintenance of signal pathways, protection from various stresses (e.g., hypoxia, ionizing radiation, etc.). Therefore, HSPs are highly expressed in tumor cells, including malignant brain tumors, where they also associate with cancer cell invasion, metastasis, and resistance to radiochemotherapy. In the current review, we aimed to assess the diagnosti

Cystic mediastinal masses have traditionally represented a diagnostic dilemma with differentiation of malignant masses a particular area of concern. Each imaging modality has strengths and weaknesses in mediastinal imaging-computed tomography (CT) offers increased spatial resolution at the cost of poorer soft tissue differentiation and requiring ionizing radiation, while magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) offers superior soft tissue contrast/characterization at significantly greater cost. Ultrasound offers real-time visualization but is operator and tissue dependent. [18F]fluoro-D-glucose (F-18

Although as a mainstay modal for cancer treatment, the clinical effect of radiotherapy (RT) does not yet meet the need of cancer patients. Developing tumour-preferential radiosensitizers or combining RT with other treatments has been acknowledged highly necessary to enhance the efficacy of RT. The present study reported a multifunctional bioactive small-molecule (designated as IR-83) simultaneously exhibiting tumour-preferential accumulation, near-infrared imaging and radio/photodynamic/photothermal therapeutic effects. IR-83 was designed and synthesized by introducing 2-nitroimidazole as a ra

UNLABELLED: Currently, there are no standards for examining patients with suspected craniosynostosis. CT of the brain with 3D skull reconstruction is a common approach to diagnose craniosynostosis in many hospitals. This technique in pediatric patients is associated with a high dose of ionizing radiation and prompts searching for other diagnostic methods.

BACKGROUND: Arterial spin labeling, a magnetic resonance imaging modality that can evaluate cerebral perfusion without using a contrast material or ionizing radiation, is becoming increasingly accessible. However, only a few reports have used this method to assess the perfusion abnormalities observed in acute encephalopathy with biphasic seizures and late reduced diffusion.
PATIENT DESCRIPTION: A 10-month-old Japanese girl presented with febrile status epilepticus (early seizures). Her convulsions ceased after the administration of intravenous phenobarbital, although her impaired consciousnes

OBJECTIVE. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a multisystemic life-limiting disorder. The leading cause of morbidity in CF is chronic pulmonary disease. Chest CT is the reference standard for detection of bronchiectasis. Cumulative ionizing radiation limits the use of CT, particularly as treatments improve and life expectancy increases. The purpose of this article is to summarize the evidence on low-dose chest CT and its effect on image quality to determine best practices for imaging in CF. CONCLUSION. Low-dose chest CT is technically feasible, reduces dose, and renders satisfactory image quality. There

Ultrasonic guided wave techniques have been applied to characterize cortical bone for osteoporosis assessment. Compared with the current gold-standard X-ray-based diagnostic methods, ultrasound-based techniques pose some advantages such as compactness, low cost, lack of ionizing radiation, and their ability to detect the mechanical properties of the cortex. Axial transmission technique with a source-receiver offset is employed to acquire the ultrasound data. The dispersion characteristics of the guided waves in bones are normally analyzed in the transformed domains using the dispersion curves.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, is a three-dimensional spinal deformity characterized by lateral curvature and axial rotation around the vertical body axis of the spine, the cause of which is yet unknown. The fast progression entails regular clinical monitoring, including X-rays. Here we present an approach to evaluate scoliosis from the three-dimensional image of a patient's torso, captured by an ionizing radiation free body scanner, in combination with a model of the ribcage and spine. A skeletal structure of the ribcage and vertebral column was modelled with computer aided designed softwar

Exposure of the thyroid gland to ionizing radiation at a young age is the main recognized risk factor for differentiated thyroid cancer. After the Chernobyl and Fukushima nuclear accidents, thyroid cancer screening was implemented mainly for children, leading to case over-diagnosis as seen in South Korea after the implementation of opportunistic screening (where subjects are recruited at healthcare sites). The aim of cancer screening is to reduce morbidity and mortality, but screening can also cause negative effects on health (with unnecessary treatment if over-diagnosis) and on quality of lif

Gray hair is a visible sign of tissue degeneration during aging. Graying is attributed to dysfunction of melanocyte stem cells (McSCs) that results in depletion of their melanin-producing progeny. This non-lethal phenotype makes the hair follicle and its pigment system an attractive model for investigating mechanisms that contribute to tissue aging and therapeutic strategies to combat this process. One potential combination therapeutic is RT1640, which is comprised of two drugs that are known to stimulate hair growth (cyclosporine A [CsA] and minoxidil), along with RT175, a non-immunosuppressi

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this review paper is to evaluate the current data regarding clinical use of ultrasound (US) for diagnosis of systemic vasculitis.
RECENT FINDINGS: In recent years, US has emerged as an image modality taking a central role in the diagnosis and monitoring of vasculitides by measuring vessel wall inflammation and changes in vessel wall thickness. US has been recognized as an important tool predominantly in the diagnosis of large vessel vasculitis (LVV). Signs like the "halo sign" in temporal arteries of patients with giant cell arteritis (GCA) have demonstrated to b

Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) is a pandemic infectious disease caused by a novel coronavirus. Infection can result in a wide range of clinical outcomes, from an asymptomatic condition to severe bilateral pneumonia and life-threatening conditions. Diagnosis is based on the combination of a history of exposure, clinical presentation, and real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assays. In endemic areas, imaging tests including computed tomography (CT), chest X-ray (CXR), and ultrasound (US) have been included in the diagnostic workup. Multiple and peripheral areas of parenchymal injury i

Cockayne Syndrome (CS) is a severe neurodegenerative and premature aging autosomal-recessive disease, caused by inherited defects in the CSA and CSB genes, leading to defects in transcription-coupled nucleotide excision repair (TC-NER) and consequently hypersensitivity to ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. TC-NER is initiated by lesion-stalled RNA polymerase II, which stabilizes the interaction with the SNF2/SWI2 ATPase CSB to facilitate recruitment of the CSA E3 Cullin ubiquitin ligase complex. However, the precise biochemical connections between CSA and CSB are unknown. The small ubiquitin-like m

This work deals with the assessment of personal exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields and the study of temporal and spatial daily variations in a group of 24 adults from the West Bank, Palestine. Exposure was measured using a personal exposure meter EME SPY 140. Mean values of exposure levels from different radiofrequency sources were calculated using both naive and robust regression on order statistics approaches. The total daily exposure from all radiofrequency electromagnetic field sources varied widely among participants depending on their location, the mobile network they use,

Hip pain is a commonly reported primary symptom with many potential causes. The causal entity can remain elusive, even after clinical history review, physical examination, and diagnostic imaging. Although there are many options for definitive treatment, many of these procedures are invasive, are associated with risk of morbidity, and can be unsuccessful, with lengthy revision surgery required. Percutaneous musculoskeletal intervention is an attractive alternative to more invasive procedures and an indispensable tool for evaluating and managing hip pain. US is an ideal modality for imaging guid

Photodynamic therapy is a therapeutic option to treat cancer and other diseases. PDT is used every day in dermatology, and recent developments in the treatment of glioblastoma, mesothelioma or prostate have demonstrated the efficacy of this modality. In order to improve the efficacy of PDT, different strategies are under development, such as the use of targeted PS or nanoparticles to improve selectivity and the design of light devices to better monitor the light dose. Due to the low penetration of light into tissue, another way to improve the efficacy of PDT to treat deep tumors is the use of
