Fundoplication versus oral proton pump inhibitors for gastroesophageal reflux disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a widely studied and highly prevalent condition. However, few are reported about the exact efficacy and safety of fundoplication (FPT) compared to oral intake proton-pump inhibitors (PPI). This systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials (RCT) aims to compare PPI and FPT in relation to the efficacy, as well as the adverse events associated with these therapies. Search carried out in June 2020 was conducted on Medline, Cochrane, EMBASE and LILACS. Selection was restricted to RCT comparing PPI and FPT (open or laparoscopic) in GERD

Concerns about Data Integrity of 22 Randomized Controlled Trials in Women's Health.

OBJECTIVE: During a review on postpartum hemorrhage, we identified randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of one author conducted at the same time and place for the same condition, with large differences in baseline characteristics. We assessed the data integrity of the RCTs of this author. STUDY DESIGN: We undertook a focused analysis of the data integrity of all RCTs published by Dr. Ahmed M. Maged. We examined the studies for clinical logic and made pairwise comparisons of baseline characteristics and outcomes between trials. We used mathematical methods to assess whether the distribution of

Efficacy and safety in the treatment of hyperprolactinemia: A systematic review and network meta-analysis.

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: Hyperprolactinemia is a neuroendocrine disease that is responsible for a quarter of cases of secondary amenorrhea, which can lead to infertility in women. Dopaminergic agonists (bromocriptine, cabergoline, quinagolide) can be used in the treatment. However, there is a lack of secondary studies that compare their efficacy and safety, especially through a network meta-analysis. Thus, to contribute to the decision-making, a systematic review and network meta-analyses (NMA) were performed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of dopaminergic agonists in the treatment of

Functional outcomes and adverse effects following three interventions for displaced midshaft clavicular fractures: A Bayesian network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

INTRODUCTION: The efficacy of the most commonly used interventions for clavicle fractures remains controversial. These interventions are: open reduction and plate fixation (ORPF), non-surgical intervention (NSI), and use of an intramedullary nail (IMN). In adult patients with clavicle fractures, choosing which intervention might be best is challenging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: PubMed, Journals@Ovid Full Text, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Ovid MEDLINE, and Embase were performed to search English-language studies from the inception to February 2020. Randomized control

Subcutaneous Infliximab, CT-P13 SC: A Profile of Its Use in the EU.

CT-P13 (Remsima®; Inflectra®), a biosimilar of reference infliximab (Remicade®), provides a useful alternative for patients requiring infliximab therapy and, as with other biosimilar agents, has the potential to reduce treatment costs. Furthermore, the availability of CT-P13 in a subcutaneous formulation (CT-P13 SC), with the possibility (after adequate training) of self-administration at home, has the potential to both improve patient convenience and reduce the burden on the healthcare system. The initial approval of CT-P13 SC, for use in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis in adults, was b

Role of nutritional supplements in selected dermatological disorders: A review.

BACKGROUND: While a plethora of literature continues to be published on the role of nutritional agents both in lay press and indexed journals, the data is not on a firm footing and leaves the dermatologist in a quandry and the patient confused. The various agents include vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants, diets & gluten. A proper knowledge of the role of nutritional supplements in dermatological diseases can be a useful tool in advising the patients and in certain cases ameliorating the disorder. PATIENTS/METHODS: Literature review of last 15 years was made using the terms "diet i

Dipyrone as pre-emptive measure in postoperative analgesia after tonsillectomy in children: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Tonsillectomy is the 2nd most common outpatient surgery performed on children in the United States of America. Its main complication is pain, which varies in intensity from moderate to severe. Dipyrone is one of the most widely used painkillers in the postoperative period in children. Its use, however, is controversial in the literature, to the point that it is banned in many countries due to its potential severe adverse effects. Because of this controversy, reviewing the analgesic use of dipyrone in the postoperative period of tonsillectomy in children is essential. OBJECTIVE:

Population differences in vaccine responses (POPVAC): scientific rationale and cross-cutting analyses for three linked, randomised controlled trials assessing the role, reversibility and mediators of immunomodulation by chronic infections in the tropics.

INTRODUCTION: Vaccine-specific immune responses vary between populations and are often impaired in low income, rural settings. Drivers of these differences are not fully elucidated, hampering identification of strategies for optimising vaccine effectiveness. We hypothesise that urban-rural (and regional and international) differences in vaccine responses are mediated to an important extent by differential exposure to chronic infections, particularly parasitic infections. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Three related trials sharing core elements of study design and procedures (allowing comparison of out

Pneumatic balloon dilatation versus laparoscopic Heller myotomy for achalasia: a failed attempt at meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The advent of peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) shed some light on the role of the current standards in the treatment of idiopathic achalasia, namely endoscopic pneumatic dilatation (PD) and laparoscopic Heller myotomy (LHM). We analyzed the quality of the current evidence comparing LHM and PD. METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed in Pubmed/Medline, Web of Science, Google Scholar and Cochrane for meta-analyses/systematic reviews comparing PD and LHM or open surgery, limited to English language full-text articles. After a detailed review of these meta-analyses, a

Impact of a compression garment, on top of the usual care, in patients with breast cancer with early disturbance of the lymphatic transport: protocol of a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer-related lymphoedema (BCRL) is a common phenomenon. When lymphoedema is diagnosed late, options for treatment are diminished. Therefore, early diagnosis and treatment are very important to alter the potential deleterious evolution. Lymphofluoroscopy visualises the superficial lymphatic architecture in detail, giving the opportunity to detect a disturbance in the lymphatic transport (ie, dermal backflow) before the lymphoedema is clinically visible. The main objective is to investigate if there is an additional effect of a compression garment on top of the usual care (

Study protocol for a pilot randomized controlled trial on a smartphone application-based intervention for subthreshold depression: Study protocol clinical trial (SPIRIT Compliant).

INTRODUCTION: Interventions aimed at addressing subthreshold depression (StD) are important to prevent the onset of major depressive disorder. Our video playback application (SPSRS) is designed to reduce depressive symptoms by presenting positive words in videos, shedding new light on the treatment of StD. However, no randomized controlled trial (RCT) has utilized this video playback application for the treatment of individuals with StD. Therefore, a pilot RCT was designed to determine the feasibility of a full-scale trial. We herein present a study protocol for investigating the utility of a
