Exploring cell death mechanisms in liver transplantation: implications for graft survival.

Liver transplantation (LT) has become a life-saving therapy for patients with end-stage liver disease and malignancies. However, graft survival remains a significant challenge because of LT-related stresses. Grafts are subject to several stresses, including cold preservation after procurement and during transportation, as well as warm ischemia until vascular reconstitution, which can trigger hepatic cell death. This review examines the various cell death mechanisms that influence liver graft outcomes, including apoptosis, necrosis, autophagy, and non-apoptotic inflammatory cell death. We discu

Explainable multi-modal approach for uncovering key predictors of stroke-risk from ECG, EMG, blood pressure, and respiratory signals.

Accurate and timely stroke-risk prediction is necessary to help patients at risk take guided measures, as stroke remains a leading cause of death and long-term disability worldwide. While there are several developed stroke-risk prediction models using various bio-signals, it remains unclear which signal or signal feature carries the most information towards stroke. Additionally, respiratory signals have not been included in these models, despite research showing their relation to stroke disease. We address these gaps by developing an explainable multi-modal stroke-risk prediction model that in

Myo-inositol concentration in the medial prefrontal cortex is associated with changes in brain white matter microstructure in early psychosis.

Recent research highlights the critical role of white matter (WM) alterations in psychosis and schizophrenia (SZ), reporting volumetric and structural brain changes in affected individuals. In this study, we explored the role of astroglia in SZ, which is believed to play a role in white matter integrity. We investigated for the first time the associations between advanced diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging (dMRI) measures of WM microstructure and Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS)-derived glial markers in 30 subjects with early psychosis (EP, mean age 24 ± 6) versus 49 healthy controls (H

Enhancing Quality of Life in Head and Neck Cancer: A Scoping Review on the Role of Physical Prehabilitation.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Head and neck cancer presents a significant challenge for patients. Beyond the direct impact of the disease, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, while essential for cancer control, can further compromise patients' quality of life (QoL) and emotional well-being, while also introducing additional complications. These treatments may exacerbate existing cancer-related symptoms and contribute to malnutrition. This review aimed to identify and evaluate physical prehabilitation interventions implemented before or during radiotherapy/chemotherapy treatments to determine their impact on the

Evidence of the role of Midkine and Pleiotrophin in the pathogenesis of Familial Mediterranean Fever.

Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) is a chronic autoinflammatory illness that follows a pattern of periodic attacks; however, the majority of cases experience ongoing subclinical inflammation during the attack-free periods that could lead to the development of anemia, splenomegaly, heart disease, and the major complication, amyloidosis. Midkine/Pleiotrophin (MDK/PTN) are heparin-binding cytokines, with upregulated expression in various inflammatory and malignant diseases. Thus, the present research aims to identify the role of MDK and PTN in the pathogenesis of chronic inflammation and to expl

Moxibustion for gastrointestinal cancer-related fatigue: study protocol for a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Cancer-Related Fatigue (CRF) is one of the most prominent subjective symptoms that cancer patients encounter, in particular individuals with gastrointestinal tumors. This fatigue significantly impacts their quality of life, impairs adherence to treatment, and may ultimately reduce overall survival rates. Moxibustion has gradually gained recognition as a therapeutic intervention for CRF. However, clinical evidence supporting the efficacy of moxibustion remains limited. METHODS: This investigation employs a randomized, controlled, single-blinded trial design. A 1:1 random allocation

Preliminary analysis of ayahuasca-induced anatomical alterations in the somatosensory cortex of juvenile non-human primates (Callithrix jacchus) subjected to chronic stress.

Major depressive disorder remains a debilitating mental health disorder affecting millions worldwide, with growing prevalence among adolescents. Recent studies highlight the critical role of the somatosensory cortex in the neuropathology of depression, including structural alterations that impair cortical function. This study investigates the prophylactic effects of ayahuasca, a classic psychedelic brew, on morphological changes in the somatosensory cortex induced by chronic stress in juvenile male non-human primates (Callithrix jacchus). Using a model of social isolation to simulate chronic s

What is the prevalence of sleep disturbances among people with Huntington disease and pre-manifest genetic expansion carriers? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Anecdotally, sleep disturbances are common among manifest and pre-manifest Huntington disease genetic expansion carriers (HDGECs), but their prevalence has not been systematically studied. To address this gap, we systematically searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsychINFO, CINAHL-Plus, and PubMed (inception to October 2025), using exploded headings and text-words based on sleep-related terms intersected with "Huntington disease". We meta-analysed data where four or more studies used the same measure. 28 articles were included, with study design including case-series and case-control studies (sample siz

Queer tattooing: archives of spatial belonging, bodily autonomy, resistance and community.

This article examines queer tattooing as both a historical and a contemporary practice of resistance, belonging and community formation. Bringing together three archives - oral history interviews and portraits of queer elders, historical medical records documenting tattooed queer women engaged in sex work at the turn of the twentieth century and a dialogue with queer tattoo artist Sara Swanson - we consider what queer tattooing reveals across generations, bodies and spaces. Our interdisciplinary approach combines archival research, oral history, artistic practice and activist perspectives to t

The perception of disability in multiple sclerosis: validation and psychometric properties of the Italian perceived disability scale.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system and a leading cause of disability in young adults. Traditional measures of MS-related disability primarily rely on objective clinical evaluations, often neglecting patients' subjective experiences, which are affected by physical, cognitive, and emotional factors. This study aimed to validate the Italian Perceived Disability Scale (IPDS), a 20-item self-report tool designed to assess perceived disability across physical, psychological, and social domains. METHODS: A cohort of 100 individuals w

Metastable States of 2D-Material-on-Metal-Islands Structures Revealed by Thermal Cycling.

The integration of 2D materials with artificially textured substrates offers exceptional opportunities for engineering novel functional devices. A straightforward technological route towards such devices is a mechanical dry or wet transfer of 2D layer or heterostructure onto prepared patterned elements with subsequent van der Waals bonding. An issue of van der Waals bond stability is crucial for device operation but is almost unexplored. In our research, we address it by studying transport properties of hBN/graphene heterostructures transferred onto metallic island arrays and subjected to ther

Whole-genome Sequence Analysis Revealed Novel Subjective Cognitive Decline-associated Genes in 10,763 Chinese.

Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) is widely regarded as a potential preclinical stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD), yet its genetic basis remains poorly understood. To address this gap, we investigated genetic biomarkers associated with SCD using whole-genome sequencing (WGS) in 10,763 Chinese participants from the Healthy Zhejiang One Million People Cohort (HOPE Cohort). The discovery stage included 9284 samples, with 1479 samples used for validation. Using a two-stage design, we systematically investigated both common and rare variants associated with SCD. In rare variant analyses, we identi

Repeated low doses of lipopolysaccharide exacerbate behavioral changes induced by social isolation.

Social isolation (SI) due to Coronavirus disease 2019 had a substantial impact on mental health, increasing cases of major depressive disorder (MDD) and anxiety. Young individuals are notably affected, as research indicates that inflammatory responses can trigger mental health disorders, with chronic stress worsening this effect. Thus, the primary objective of this study was to investigate the combination of SI with repeated low doses of an inflammation inducer in young mice on behavioral and molecular changes in adulthood. For this, young Swiss male mice were housed in groups or isolated and
