Internal hernia through the Treitz fossa after robotic pancreatoduodenectomy: pathogenesis and preventive measures.

Internal hernia through the Treitz fossa following robotic pancreatoduodenectomy is a rare but potentially serious complication. In our review of 328 cases of robotic pancreatoduodenectomies, two patients (0.6%) required repeat surgery due to internal herniation of the entire small bowel through the Treitz fossa. This complication can present as afferent loop syndrome, with symptoms including nausea, vomiting, and abdominal distension, possibly leading to cholangitis and pancreatitis. Timely diagnosis and intervention are paramount, as conservative management often fails. Preventive measures i

Learning signs with NAO: humanoid robot as a tool for helping to learn Colombian Sign Language.

Sign languages are one of the main rehabilitation methods for dealing with hearing loss. Like any other language, the geographical location will influence on how signs are made. Particularly in Colombia, the hard of hearing population is lacking from education in the Colombian Sign Language, mainly due of the reduce number of interpreters in the educational sector. To help mitigate this problem, Machine Learning binded to data gloves or Computer Vision technologies have emerged to be the accessory of sign translation systems and educational tools, however, in Colombia the presence of this solu

Propensity to trust shapes perceptions of comforting touch between trustworthy human and robot partners.

Touching a friend to comfort or be comforted is a common prosocial behaviour, firmly based in mutual trust. Emphasising the interactive nature of trust and touch, we suggest that vulnerability, reciprocity and individual differences shape trust and perceptions of touch. We further investigate whether these elements also apply to companion robots. Participants (n = 152) were exposed to four comics depicting human-human or human-robot exchanges. Across conditions, one character was sad, the other initiated touch to comfort them, and the touchee reciprocated the touch. Participants first rated tr

Evaluation of microbial occurrence in reusable robotic instruments for minimally invasive surgery: A pilot study.

In recent decades, minimally invasive surgery has become the favoured surgical technique, with increasing utilisation of robotic surgery to enhance patient outcomes. However, the design complexity of surgical robotic instruments can pose challenges in maintaining adequate cleaning, disinfection and sterilisation-particularly of the device's interior. In our hospital, robotic instruments are reused for a maximum of ten successive patients, following the manufacturer's guidelines. To the best of our knowledge, neither the manufacturer nor ISO standards have specified any methods to determine the

Development of a Virtual Robot Rehabilitation Training System for Children with Cerebral Palsy: An Observational Study.

This paper presents the development of a robotic system for the rehabilitation and quality of life improvement of children with cerebral palsy (CP). The system consists of four modules and is based on a virtual humanoid robot that is meant to motivate and encourage children in their rehabilitation programs. The efficiency of the developed system was tested on two children with CP. The effect of using the robot is an increase in the number of exercise repetitions, as well as the time spent on therapy, developing and strengthening the child's musculature. Additionally, the children are able to p

Evaluation and modeling of diaphragm displacement using ultrasound imaging for wearable respiratory assistive robot.

INTRODUCTION: Assessing the influence of respiratory assistive devices on the diaphragm mobility is essential for advancing patient care and improving treatment outcomes. Existing respiratory assistive robots have not yet effectively assessed their impact on diaphragm mobility. In this study, we introduce for the first time a non-invasive, real-time clinically feasible ultrasound method to evaluate the impact of soft wearable robots on diaphragm displacement. METHODS: We measured and compared diaphragm displacement and lung volume in eight participants during both spontaneous and robotic-assi

Robotic assisted vs open radical cystectomy: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis.

Several randomized control trials (RCTs) have been published comparing open (ORC) with robot-assisted radical cystectomy (RARC). However, uncertainty persists regarding this issue, as evidences and recommendations on RARC are still lacking. In this systematic review and metaanalysis, we summarized evidence in this context. A literature search was conducted according to PRISMA criteria, using PubMed/Medline, Web Of Science and Embase, up to March 2024. Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were selected. The primary endpoint was to investigate health-related quality of life (QoL) both at 3 a

Understanding fundamental differences in symptomatic outcomes of hiatal versus paraoesophageal hernia robotic repairs.

Hiatal hernia (HH), or type I paraoesophageal hernias (PEH), can commonly be grouped along with types II-IV PEHs. The fundamental operation performed for repair is similar for all types. We question whether the clinical outcomes following surgical repair differ. The objective of this study is to determine the differences in clinical outcomes when comparing robotic-assisted surgical repair of HH versus types II-IV PEHs. This is a retrospective study analyzing 602 consecutive patients that underwent robotic-assisted repair of a PEH between August 2018 and June 2024. Data were retrieved from an I

Robotic Repair of Acute Traumatic Diaphragmatic Injury From an Abdominal Approach: A Case Report.

Traumatic diaphragmatic injury is a rare condition with a significant mortality risk and may cause a herniation of an intraperitoneal organ into the pleural space. In the acute phase, traumatic diaphragmatic hernia (TDH) may be repaired with laparotomy or thoracotomy and is often associated with multiple concurrent injuries. This case report highlights a rare clinical scenario of blunt traumatic DH in a 62-year-old male with approximately seven centimeters of stomach herniating into the left pleural space, repaired with minimally invasive surgery. This was done via a transabdominal approach wi

The robotic-assisted free jejunal flap for neovaginal canal creation in gender-affirming vaginoplasties.

INTRODUCTION: One of the biggest challenges with gender-affirming vaginoplasty was the creation of a long-lasting, durable, patent, and self-lubricating neovaginal canal that allowed for spontaneous, pain-free sexual intercourse. The jejunum was a durable, physiologic, and intestinal option to create the neovaginal canal that minimizes the adverse effects of skin graft, peritoneal, and colonic vaginoplasties. Free jejunal vaginoplasties had been performed in cis females for congenital genitourinary anomalies like Mullerian agenesis or after gynecologic-oncologic surgery but had yet to be repor
