Exploring gender differences in the impact of sleep and fatigue on disease severity in rheumatoid arthritis: a moderated mediation model.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is often accompanied by fatigue and sleep disturbances, which aggravate disease severity. Gender differences in these interrelationships remain insufficiently understood. This study aimed to examine whether fatigue mediates the association between sleep quality and disease severity in RA, and whether these pathways differ by gender. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A single-center study was conducted with 68 RA patients (55.9% female). Disease severity was assessed using the Routine Assessment of Patient Index Data-3, fatigue using the Bristol Rheumatology Fati

Sleep functional connectivity, hyperexcitability, and cognition in Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep disturbances are common in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and may reflect pathologic changes in brain networks. To date, no studies have examined changes in sleep functional connectivity (FC) in AD or their relationship with network hyperexcitability and cognition. METHODS: We assessed electroencephalogram (EEG) sleep FC in 33 healthy controls, 36 individuals with AD without epilepsy, and 14 individuals with AD and epilepsy. RESULTS: AD participants showed increased gamma connectivity in stage 2 sleep (N2), which was associated with longitudinal cognitive decline. Network hyper

Accelerometry for sleep assessment in children: Criterium validity of different algorithms in wrist- and ankle-worn devices.

Polysomnography, the gold-standard for measuring sleep, is costly, intrusive and usually limited to 1 night. Actigraphy offers a more affordable, less intrusive method over multiple nights. However, little research validates ActiGraph accelerometers against polysomnography, especially in children. This study evaluated the validity of different algorithms and compared wrist versus ankle accelerometer placements for estimating sleep in children aged 1-12 years. Twenty-nine children undergoing overnight type 1 polysomnography wore ActiGraph accelerometers. Six algorithms were evaluated against po

High-Throughput Small Molecule Drug Screening For Age-Related Sleep Disorders Using Drosophila melanogaster.

Sleep, an essential component of health and overall well-being, often presents challenges for older individuals who frequently experience sleep disorders characterized by shortened sleep duration and fragmented patterns. These sleep disruptions also correlate with an increased risk of various illnesses in the elderly, including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and psychological disorders. Unfortunately, existing drugs for sleep disorders are associated with significant side effects such as cognitive impairment and addiction. Consequently, the development of new, safer, and more effective sle

Sleep-Related Infant Deaths: Updated 2022 Recommendations for Reducing Infant Deaths in the Sleep Environment.

Each year in the United States, ∼3500 infants die of sleep-related infant deaths, including sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) (International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision [ICD-10] R95), ill-defined deaths (ICD-10 R99), and accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed (ICD-10 W75). After a substantial decline in sleep-related deaths in the 1990s, the overall death rate attributable to sleep-related infant deaths has remained stagnant since 2000, and disparities persist. The triple risk model proposes that SIDS occurs when an infant with intrinsic vulnerability (often manifested

Dysregulated arousal as a pathway linking childhood neglect and clinical sleep disturbances in adulthood.

BACKGROUND: A history of childhood maltreatment has a well-established association with clinical sleep disturbances in adulthood, which is a transdiagnostic contributor to many chronic diseases. OBJECTIVE: Determine whether actigraphy-measured indices of dysregulated arousal during sleep explain associations between abuse or neglect in childhood and clinical sleep disturbances in adulthood. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Participants were 646 individuals, ages 25-83 (59.3% female) from the MIDUS II Biomarker, Refresher studies. METHODS: Participants completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire,

The Role of Sleep Quality, Trait Anxiety and Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis Measures in Cognitive Abilities of Healthy Individuals.

Sleep plays a crucial role in cognitive processes. Sleep and wake memory consolidation seem to be regulated by glucocorticoids, pointing out the potential role of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis in the relationship between sleep quality and cognitive abilities. Trait anxiety is another factor that is likely to moderate the relationship between sleep and cognition, because poorer sleep quality and subtle HPA axis abnormalities have been reported in people with high trait anxiety. The current study aimed to explore whether HPA axis activity or trait anxiety moderate the relationshi

Influence of age and gender on reference values for common pediatric sleep questionnaires: Results from a community-based study.

OBJECTIVES: Sleep problems are often assessed using questionnaires, but it is unclear whether the responses given are influenced by age and gender. We addressed this question in several widely used pediatric sleep questionnaires and provide age-dependent percentile curves. METHODS: Data of a community-based study in schoolchildren were reanalyzed (N = 163, 50% males, age 6-17 years). Children and their parents completed the Sleep-Related Breathing Disorder Scale (SRBDS) of the Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire, the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC), the Sleep Self Report (SSR) of the Ch

Differential relationships between cannabis consumption and sleep health as a function of HIV status.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence that regular cannabis use has negative effects on sleep health. Relative to HIV- populations, HIV + individuals consistently report greater sleep impairments. The number of HIV + individuals reporting frequent cannabis use, often to treat sleep issues, has significantly increased recently. It is unknown, however, if HIV status moderates the association between cannabis use and sleep health. The current study, therefore, examines these associations in a sample of HIV + and HIV- adults. METHODS: HIV + and HIV- (N = 107) individuals completed one laboratory visit. P

Reclassification of clinical sleep disorders using traditional models of syndromic, neuroanatomic, pathophysiological and etiological diagnosis.

Existing classifications of central nervous system sleep disorders do not often provide tools to diagnose the majority of patients complaining of sleep-related symptoms, nor always guide effective treatment. I present a novel classification system that completely separates clinical syndromes from anatomical localization, pathophysiology, and etiology. The clinical syndrome I present can describe the majority of patients, but can be fractionated into individual subgroups for further study. By then separating the anatomy and physiology from the symptoms, an avenue of research becomes available t
