Implementation of Community Health Worker Support for Tobacco Cessation: A Mixed-Methods Study.

OBJECTIVE: Adults with serious mental illness have high tobacco use disorder rates and underutilization of first-line tobacco cessation pharmacotherapy. In a randomized trial, participants offered community health worker (CHW) support and primary care provider (PCP) education had higher tobacco abstinence rates at two years, partly through increased tobacco cessation pharmacotherapy initiation. This study determined the association between participant-CHW engagement and tobacco abstinence outcomes. METHODS: This was a secondary, mixed-methods analysis of 196 participants in the trial's interv

Protocol of a randomized controlled trial examining psychosocial enhancement and standard medication treatment for co-occurring opioid use and mental health disorders: A half fractional factorial randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The opioid epidemic disproportionately affects individuals with co-occurring opioid use and mental health disorders (COD), who often have poor treatment engagement. Multicomponent treatment models are popular solutions to increase treatment access and engagement for those with COD. Maintaining Independence and Sobriety through Systems Integration, Outreach and Networking (MISSION) is a hybrid multicomponent linkage and treatment approach that provides assertive community outreach combined with psychosocial treatment. This protocol paper describes a randomized controlled trial compa

Routine Hearing Screening for Older Adults in Primary Care: Insights of Patients and Clinic Personnel.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Hearing loss frequently goes undiagnosed and untreated, with serious sequelae. Hearing screening facilitates diagnosis and treatment but is not routinely conducted in primary care. This study addresses the attitudes and insights of patients and primary care clinic personnel relative to the routinization of hearing screening in primary care for older adults. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Data presented are from the qualitative portion of a larger study. The main study compared screening completion for 3 approaches to coordinating telephone-based hearing screening with

Perceptions and Experiences of Exercise Snacks Among Middle-Aged and Older Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta-Synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity in middle-aged and older adults is a major health problem. Exercise snacks are an emerging form of physical activity characterized by shorter single bouts of high-intensity exercise spread out repeatedly throughout the day which can provide more exercise opportunities for middle-aged and older adults. PURPOSE: To summarize perceptions and experiences of exercise snacks among middle-aged and older adults, and explore the barriers and facilitators of promoting exercise snacks. METHODS: We followed the PRISMA and systematically searched five databases from the ea

Linguistic Validation of a British-English Version of the SAMANTA Questionnaire and HMB-VAS Tool: A Step Toward Improved Diagnosis of Heavy Menstrual Bleeding.

BACKGROUND: Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) is a common disorder interfering with physical, emotional and social domains, and overall quality of life (QoL). The Heavy Menstrual Bleeding-Visual Analog Scale (HMB-VAS) tool, including the VAS for menstrual bleeding intensity (VAS-Int) and the VAS for its interference with daily activities (VAS-Imp), is useful for HMB screening. The SAMANTA questionnaire (SAMANTA-Q) was developed and psychometrically validated in Spanish to easily identify women with HMB. However, these instruments have not been validated in other languages. This study seeks to lin

Indicators for National and Global Monitoring of Girls' Menstrual Health and Hygiene: Development of a Priority Shortlist.

PURPOSE: Despite the importance of menstrual health and hygiene (MHH) for adolescent girls' health, education, and gender equality, few countries monitor MHH. MHH needs remain underprioritized, and progress achieved through policies, programs, or investments go unmeasured. This article reports the systematic development of an indicator shortlist to monitor adolescent girls' MHH at the national and global levels across low- and middle-income countries. METHODS: A core group of MHH researchers and practitioners collaborated with stakeholders from three countries with demonstrated commitment to

The socioeconomic impact of equine epizootic lymphangitis in working equids in low and middle-income countries: A scoping review.

Equine epizootic lymphangitis (EEL) is a very infectious and contagious fungal disease that, with its ocular, respiratory and skin forms, causes severe effects on the health and welfare of working equids. Treatment is expensive and rarely available in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). Epidemiological data is lacking in most countries where the disease is known to exist. The purpose of this scoping review is to identify the current knowledge on the socioeconomic impact of EEL in working equids in LMICs, to highlight knowledge gaps and provide recommendations for future research. Service Utilization among Persons Who Inject Drugs Attending a Syringe Exchange Program in New York State.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic studies commonly recommend the integration of harm reduction programs with health and social services to improve the well-being of persons who inject drugs (PWIDs). This study identified service utilization clusters for PWIDs attending a syringe exchange program (SEP) in 2017 to better understand in-house service usage. METHODS: We applied Multiple Correspondence Analysis and Hierarchical Clustering on Principal Components to classify 475 PWIDs into clusters using anonymized, SEP records data from New York. Multinomial logistic regression was used to identify sociode

Parental and Child Diagnosis Storytelling and Self-Image in French Children With Cleft lip With or Without Cleft Palate.

OBJECTIVE: Psychosocial adjustment can be challenging for children with cleft lip with or without a cleft palate (CL ± P). Previous studies have linked social integration with self-acceptance and highlighted the impact of the parents' stress on self-acceptance. Teasing can be linked to children having difficulties explaining their diagnosis to others. This prospective research aimed to gain a better understanding of family communication about cleft, children's oral storytelling about their cleft, and explore their self-image and perceived familial acceptance. PARTICIPANTS: Parents and their c…

Brain Structural Covariance Network in Asperger Syndrome Differs From Those in Autism Spectrum Disorder and Healthy Controls.

INTRODUCTION: Autism is a heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorder associated with social, cognitive and behavioral impairments. These impairments are often reported along with alteration of the brain structure such as abnormal changes in the grey matter (GM) density. However, it is not yet clear whether these changes could be used to differentiate various subtypes of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). METHOD: We compared the regional changes of GM density in ASD, Asperger's Syndrome (AS) individuals and a group of healthy controls (HC). In addition to regional changes itself, the amount of GM

Workhorse Free Functional Muscle Transfer Techniques for Smile Reanimation in Children with Congenital Facial Palsy: Case Report and Systematic Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric facial palsy represents a rare multifactorial entity. Facial reanimation restores smiling, thus boosting self-confidence and social integration of the affected children. The purpose of this paper is to present a systematic review of microsurgical workhorse free functional muscle transfer procedures with emphasis on the long-term functional, aesthetic, and psychosocial outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a literature search of the PubMed database from 1995 to 2019 using the following search strategy: "facial paralysis"[Title/Abstract] OR "facial palsy"[Title]. W…

Developmental differences in the prospective organisation of goal-directed movement between children with autism and typically developing children: A smart tablet serious game study.

Movement is prospective. It structures self-generated engagement with objects and social partners and is fundamental to children's learning and development. In autistic children, previous reports of differences in movement kinematics compared to neurotypical peers suggest that its prospective organisation might be disrupted. Here, we employed a smart tablet serious game paradigm to assess differences in the feedforward and feedback mechanisms of prospective action organisation, between autistic and neurotypical preschool children. We analysed 3926 goal-directed finger movements made during sma
