Trauma exposure and short-term volitional personality trait change.

OBJECTIVE: Research into post-traumatic growth (PTG) finds individuals report positive changes in their identity, relationships, and worldviews after trauma. In a pre-registered 16-week longitudinal study, we examined trait change after recent trauma exposure to test an operationalization of PTG as positive personality change. We examined the influence of intrapersonal and social factors including motivation to change traits, perceived social support, and event centrality. METHOD: Participants (n = 1004) reported on trauma exposure in past 1-month, centrality of each traumatic event, and soci…

Challenged and changed: Quiet ego and posttraumatic growth in mothers raising children with autism spectrum disorder.

Posttraumatic growth theory posits that when life circumstances are perceived as stressful, secondary appraisal processes can be recruited in ways to facilitate both coping efforts and personal growth. Using a mixed-methods approach, we found mothers' most challenging experiences involved child behavior (e.g. aggression, communication, and social issues) and psychosocial impacts (e.g. lack of social support, perceived judgment of others, perceived loss, and personal distress). Descriptions of most rewarding experiences reflect posttraumatic growth frameworks including constructive perceptions …

Childhood exposure to emotional abuse and later life stress among Kenyan women: a mediation analysis of cross-sectional data.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: We explore whether perceived stress among Kenyan mothers is predicted by childhood exposure to emotional abuse - both witnessed among parents and experienced directly. Further, we explore whether this association is mediated by social support, family functioning and polygynous marriage. DESIGN: We used cross-sectional data from a systematic random sample (n = 1974) of mothers in semi-rural Kenya. METHODS: Data were collected using validated scales and trained interviewers. Analyses were conducted using bootstrapped structural equation models and fixed-effects linear…

Coming Out to Family and Friends in the Trans and Gender Diverse Context.

Despite the risks of rejection and discrimination, "coming out" can be an important psychological milestone for transgender (trans) and gender diverse people (TGD). We evaluated the dimensions of identity that predict coming out to family and friends, and the role of social support in explaining the psychosocial benefits associated with coming out. An online survey was completed by 951 TGD adults, 516 (54.3%) who identify as gender binary (164 transwomen and 352 transmen) and 435 (45.7%) who identify as nonbinary. Overall, gender binary TGD people were more likely than nonbinary people to disc…

Interpersonal Predictors of Grief Among Caregivers of Persons With Dementia.

OBJECTIVE: Family caregivers of persons with dementia experience grief as the care recipients' dementia advances. Subtyping social anxiety disorder in developed and developing countries.

BACKGROUND: Although social anxiety disorder (SAD) is classified in the fourth edition of The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-IV) into generalized and non-generalized subtypes, community surveys in Western countries find no evidence of disjunctions in the dose-response relationship between number of social fears and outcomes to support this distinction. We aimed to determine whether this holds across a broader set of developed and developing countries, and whether subtyping according to number of performance versus interactional fears would be more useful. METHODS: The World Health Org
