Primary Brain Rhabdomyosarcoma Causing Extracranial Metastases: Case Report with Narrative Review of Atypical Presentations and Their Diagnostic Challenges.

BACKGROUND: Rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare malignant tumor originating from striated muscle cells. It accounts for only 3% of all soft tissue sarcomas in adults, and its metastases can also reach the central nervous system. Only sporadic cases of primary brain rhabdomyosarcoma (PBRMS) have been reported so far. CASE DESCRIPTION: We discuss the atypical presentation and diagnostic challenge of PBRMS in a 65-year-old man. He presented with a 3-day history of progressive right hemiparesis caused by an unspecific left frontoparietal heterogeneously enhancing lesion. Total body computed tomography and

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome with mesenteric fibromatosis: A case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) and mesenteric fibromatosis (MF) are rare diseases, and PJS accompanying MF has not been previously reported. Here, we report a case of a 36-year-old man with both PJS and MF, who underwent total colectomy and MF surgical excision without regular follow-up. Two years later, he sought treatment for recurrent acute abdominal pain. Emergency computed tomography showed multiple soft tissue masses in the abdominal and pelvic cavity, and adhesions in the small bowel and peritoneum. Partial intestinal resection and excision of the recurrent MF were performed t

A novel rat model of heterotopic ossification after polytrauma with traumatic brain injury.

Neurological heterotopic ossification (NHO) is characterized by abnormal bone growth in soft tissue and joints in response to injury to the central nervous system. The ectopic bone frequently causes pain, restricts mobility, and decreases the quality of life for those affected. NHO commonly develops in severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients, particularly in the presence of concomitant musculoskeletal injuries (i.e. polytrauma). There are currently no animal models that accurately mimic these combinations of injuries, which has limited our understanding of NHO pathobiology, as well as the

Screening of Pediatric Facial Fractures by Brain Computed Tomography: Diagnostic Performance Comparison With Facial Computed Tomography.

OBJECTIVES: Facial bone fractures secondary to head trauma are more common in children than in adults. Recently, multidetector row computed tomography (CT) has been considered superior to conventional radiography. Some studies have reported that facial soft tissue injuries require both facial and brain CT and that brain CT is helpful in screening facial bone fractures. However, these studies included only adult patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of brain CT and the need for additional facial CT to detect facial bone fractures in emergency pediatrics. ME

Insights into the molecular pathogenesis of cardiospondylocarpofacial syndrome: MAP3K7 c.737-7A > G variant alters the TGFβ-mediated α-SMA cytoskeleton assembly and autophagy.

Transforming growth factor beta-activated kinase 1 (TAK1) is a highly conserved kinase protein encoded by MAP3K7, and activated by multiple extracellular stimuli, growth factors and cytokines. Heterozygous variants in MAP3K7 cause the cardiospondylocarpofacial syndrome (CSCFS) which is characterized by short stature, dysmorphic facial features, cardiac septal defects with valve dysplasia, and skeletal anomalies. CSCFS has been described in seven patients to date and its molecular pathogenesis is only partially understood. Here, the functional effects of the MAP3K7 c.737-7A > G variant, previou

Comparison of White Blood Cell Scintigraphy, FDG PET/CT and MRI in Suspected Diabetic Foot Infection: Results of a Large Retrospective Multicenter Study.

Diabetic foot infections (DFIs) represent one of the most frequent and disabling morbidities of longstanding diabetes; therefore, early diagnosis is mandatory. The aim of this multicenter retrospective study was to compare the diagnostic accuracy of white blood cell scintigraphy (WBC), 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography ((18F) FDG PET/CT), and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in patients with suspected DFI. Images and clinical data from 251 patients enrolled by five centers were collected in order to calculate the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of W

DIFFUSE IDIOPATHIC SKELETAL HYPEROSTOSIS IN CAPTIVE GORILLAS (GORILLA SPP.): APPEARANCES AND DIAGNOSIS.

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is a disorder of unknown cause, in which new bone forms in soft tissues attached to the skeleton. Originally described in humans, in whom it is quite common, it is usually asymptomatic. New bone may completely bridge across joints, especially in the spine. However, it can be difficult to distinguish from diseases such as spondyloarthritis and spondylosis. With safer and increased use of radiography in diagnosis, the unfamiliar skeletal changes of asymptomatic DISH may now be coincidentally revealed during investigation of other disorders and resu

Poly(POG)n loaded with recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 accelerates new bone formation in a critical-sized bone defect mouse model.

BACKGROUND: Delivery of bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) via animal-derived absorbable collagen materials is used for the treatment of large bone defects. However, the administration of bovine proteins to humans is associated with the risk of zoonotic complications. We therefore examined the effect of combining BMP-2 with collagen-like peptides, poly(POG)n, in a critical-sized bone defect mouse model. METHODS: A 2-mm critical-sized bone defect was created in the femur of 9-week-old male C57/BL6J mice. Mice were randomly allocated into one of four treatment groups (n = 6 each): control (no

Aortic dissection extending from the brachiocephalic artery during transradial coronary catheterization: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Iatrogenic acute aortic dissection (AD) is an extremely rare but devastating complication during cardiac catheterization. It can be treated conservatively if it develops in a retrograde form or manifests as an intramural hematoma (IMH) with a micro-intimal tear in the absence of instability. However, only a few reports exist on its natural course and long-term outcomes. CASE PRESENTATION: A 78-year-old woman presented to the emergency department with acute chest discomfort. Elective cardiac catheterization was performed via the right radial artery. The patient's brachiocephalic ar

Chemotherapy combined with apatinib for the treatment of desmoplastic small round cell tumors: A case report.

Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a type of soft-tissue sarcoma with poor prognosis. Current treatments include multidisciplinary treatment options such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Apatinib is an oral, small-molecule, anti-tumor, angiogenesis-targeted drug, which acts mainly on the intracellular binding site of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2. In this study, we administered apatinib in combination with chemotherapy to achieve good disease control. This is a 31-year-old male who presented with upper abdominal pain, nausea, and anorexia for over a month

Nonvascularized Iliac Bone Reconstruction for the Mandible Without Maxillofacial Skin Scarring.

PURPOSE: There are many methods to reconstruct the mandible, but they are often accompanied by trauma, which can lead to scarring of the maxillofacial skin. The purpose of this study was to show the utility of a minimally invasive method for reconstruction of the mandible with nonvascularized iliac bone grafts without a skin scar, as well as to evaluate the success rate and complications. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective case series. We retrospectively analyzed patients who underwent transoral resection of benign mandibular pathologies, followed by nonvascularized iliac bone gra

Anatomical, histological and computed tomography comparisons of the eye and adnexa of crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous) to domestic dogs.

An understanding of species' morphological and physiological parameters is crucial to developing conservation strategies for wild animals kept in human care. Detailed information is lacking for crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous) eyes and adnexa. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe anatomical, histological and computed tomography (CT) features of the eye and adnexa in crab-eating fox, compared to domestic dogs. CT of the eye and adnexa of one live animal and a frozen specimen was performed for anatomical identification. In addition, the heads of five animals of each species were fix

Tomographic evaluation of the influence of the placement of a collagen membrane subjacent to the sinus mucosa during maxillary sinus floor augmentation: a randomized clinical trial.

AIM: To study the influence of a collagen membrane placed subjacent to the sinus mucosa on the dimensional changes of augmented maxillary sinus floor. METHODS: Twenty patients were recruited in the study and randomly assigned to two groups. After the elevation of the maxillary sinus mucosa, a collagen membrane with standardized dimensions was placed at the test sites subjacent to the sinus mucosa and the elevated space was filled with a xenograft, both at test and control sites. A collagen membrane was then used to cover the antrostomy at both sites, and sutures were applied to close the woun

Disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex infection mimicking malignancy in a patient with anti-IFN-γ autoantibodies: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Disseminated nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infections occur mostly in immunocompromised patients. Therefore, it is difficult to diagnose disseminated NTM infections in patients without history of immunocompromised diseases or using immunosuppressant. Patients with anti-interferon-γ (IFN-γ) autoantibodies are vulnerable to intracellular infections, such as disseminated NTM. Currently, there is no widely used and efficient technique for the detection of anti-IFN-γ autoantibodies. Herein, we report a case of an apparently healthy patient with disseminated Mycobacterium avium compl

The degree of sclerosis is associated with prognosis in well-differentiated liposarcoma of the retroperitoneum.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Well-differentiated liposarcomas (WDL) are often partly composed of sclerotic tissue, however, the amount varies widely between tumors, and its prognostic significance is unknown. We hypothesized that tumors with more sclerosis would behave more aggressively. METHODS: Primary retroperitoneal WDL from 29 patients resected at our institution with follow-up were histologically evaluated by soft tissue pathologists blinded to outcome. Tumors with ≥ 10% sclerosis were designated "sclerotic" while tumors with < 10% sclerosis were designated as "minimally sclerotic". Cellu

Isolated retroperitoneal enteric duplication cyst associated with an accessory pancreatic lobe.

INTRODUCTION: Enteric duplication cysts are rare congenital anomalies. They are lined by gastrointestinal mucosa, connected to the digestive tract, and share smooth muscle layers and a common blood supply. In rare cases, duplication cysts are isolated from the digestive tract and have a unique blood supply. No patient with isolated duplication cysts that are located in the retroperitoneum and associated with an accessory pancreatic lobe at the onset have been reported to date. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 10-year-old Asian boy complained of left upper abdominal pain for more than 3 months. Contra

Anterolateral Approach for Central Thoracic Disc Prolapse-Surgical Strategies Used to Tackle Differing Operative Findings: 3-Dimensional Operative Video.

Thoracic disc prolapses causing cord compression can be challenging. For compressive central disc protrusions, a posterior approach is not suitable due to an unacceptable level of cord manipulation. An anterolateral transthoracic approach provides direct access to the disc prolapse allowing for decompression without disturbing the spinal cord. In this video, we describe 2 cases of thoracic myelopathy from a compressive central thoracic disc prolapse. In both cases, informed consent was obtained. Despite similar radiological appearances of heavy calcification, intraoperatively significant diffe

Extra-skeletal Ewing Sarcoma of the chest wall in a child.

Chest wall or pleural-based tumours represent a heterogeneous group of lesions that are infrequent in children and infants; however, a large proportion of these lesions are malignant in nature. Categorising them on the basis of primary versus secondary, site of origin (osseous and cartilage, or soft tissue) and tissue composition may assist in narrowing the differential diagnosis. We present a case of a 7-year-old boy with a progressive history of dyspnoea. The initial chest radiograph (CXR) demonstrated complete opacification of the left hemithorax with no air bronchograms. This was associate
