Outcome of paediatric cataract surgery in Northwest Ethiopia: a retrospective case series.

AIM: To assess visual acuity outcomes, and factors associated with the outcome, of paediatric cataract surgery at the Child Eye Health Terti … in 33 eyes (37%). In bilateral cataract, worse outcomes were associated with preoperative nystagmus/strabismus. In traumatic cases, worse outcomes were associated with the preoperative trauma-related complications. CONCLUSIONS: Visual acuity improved significantly after surgery, with better outcomes in bilateral cases. Early detection and surgery by a train …

CONCLUSION: Our patients do not have gross structural brain defects besides microcephaly, strabismus, myopia, and growth or developmental delay. Large platelets were observed in the patients and unusual electron-dense intracytoplasmic inclusions in fibroblasts and epidermal basal cells were observed in both affected and unaffected family members. Monosomy 18p is a risk factor for facioscapulohumeral dystrophy.

BACKGROUND: 18p deletion syndrome is a rare disorder caused by partial or full monosomy of the short arm of chromosome 18. Clinical symptoms caused by 18p hemizygosity include cognitive impairment, mild facial dysmorphism, strabismus and ptosis. Among other genes, structural maintenance of chromosomes flexible hinge domain containing 1 (SMCHD1) is hemizygous in most patients with 18p deletions. Digenic inheritance of a SMCHD1 mutation and a moderately sized D4Z4 repeat on a facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) permissive genetic background of chromosome 4 can cause FSHD type 2 (FSHD2)…

Comparative study of visual dysfunctions in 6-10-year-old very preterm- and full-term-born children.

PURPOSE: To compare visual dysfunction between very preterm-born (VPB) children with no retinopathy of prematurity (no-ROP) at 6-10 years of … incidence of 16.7%. Amblyopia found in 10% of VPB children compared to 3.3% in full-term children. Strabismus was found equally in 10% of each group. CONCLUSION: VPB children with no-ROP are at an increased risk of developing decreased BCVA at least in one eye and anisometropia compared to age-matched full-term controls.

Finally, the remaining participants underwent an exhaustive assessment of their accommodative and binocular vision status. Retrobulbar cellulitis and abscessation: focus on short- and long-term concurrent ophthalmic diseases in 41 dogs.

OBJECTIVE: To describe concurrent ophthalmic diseases in dogs with retrobulbar cellulitis and abscessation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospe … corneal sensation (n=1), corneal oedema (n=1), corneal fibrosis (n=4), corneal lipidosis (n=1) and strabismus after suspected fibrosis (n=2) were diagnosed. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Ophthalmic complications are common in patients with retrobulbar inflammation indicating that these patients should undergo ophthalmic assessment and follow-up.

The Davida Teller Award Lecture, 2016: Visual Brain Development: A review of "Dorsal Stream Vulnerability"-motion, mathematics, amblyopia, actions, and attention.

Research in the Visual Development Unit on "dorsal stream vulnerability' (DSV) arose from research in two somewhat different areas. In the first, using cortical milestones for local and global processing from our neurobiological model, we identified cerebral visual impairment in infants in the first year of life. In the second, using photo/videorefraction in population refractive screening programs, we showed that infant spectacle wear could reduce the incidence of strabismus and amblyopia, but many preschool children, who had been significantly hyperopic earlier, showed visuo-motor and attent…

PURPOSE: To report four cases of early onset sixth-nerve palsy all of whom had eccentric fixation. METHODS: A retrospective case note revie … ear, and 2Δ XT (range 15XT-14ET) at distance. CONCLUSIONS: We speculate that early onset paralytic strabismus due to congenital sixth-nerve palsy results in an inability to cross fixate which results in the development of eccentric fixation. Attempts to use reverse occlusion to negate the eccentric fixation failed. We therefore recommend early surgery for t …

Assessing Suppression in Amblyopic Children With a Dichoptic Eye Chart.

PURPOSE: Suppression has a key role in the etiology of amblyopia, and contrast-balanced binocular treatment can overcome suppression and improve visual acuity. Quantitative assessment of suppression could have a role in managing amblyopia. We describe a novel eye chart to assess suppression in children. METHODS: We enrolled 100 children (7-12 years; 63 amblyopic, 25 nonamblyopic with strabismus or anisometropia, 12 controls) in the primary cohort and 22 children (3-6 years; 13 amblyopic, 9 nonamblyopic) in a secondary cohort.
