INTRODUCTION: Research demonstrates health disparities for culturally diverse populations who are minority groups within dominant cultural populations. Speech-language pathology practices for dysphagia are often derived from evidence drawn from Western contexts, but there is a need for culturally responsive practices to ensure optimal outcomes. In this scoping review we aimed to explore research on swallowing assessment and management for individuals with dysphagia who are culturally diverse, including how this is understood, the nature of practice, and what gaps exist.

Thyroglossal duct cysts (TGDCs) are among the most common congenital neck anomalies and account for a substantial proportion of congenital neck lesions. Although they usually present in childhood, often within the first decade of life, first presentation in elderly patients is distinctly uncommon. This report presents a case of a giant TGDC causing hoarseness due to laryngeal compression in an elderly patient treated at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery of the Affiliated Hospital of Guizhou Medical University. The patient presented with a 2-year history of an anterior

Oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD) is traditionally managed as a mechanical swallowing impairment. This narrative review proposes a conceptual model that reframes chronic, severe OD as a high-risk clinical condition driving systemic malnutrition and progressive nutritional deterioration. We examine the epidemiological burden of OD-associated malnutrition across geriatric, neurological, and oncological populations, exploring how diagnostic heterogeneity influences reported prevalence ranges. The pathophysiological narrative synthesizes hypotheses regarding the potential disruption of the cephalic pha

BACKGROUND: Geriatric syndrome assessment is of significant importance for health evaluation in hospitalized older adults. Physical frailty, functional dependence, dysphagia, and depression may coexist with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and interact with one another.
METHODS: A total of 1,665 hospitalized patients aged ≥60 years from June 2024 to March 2025 were included. MCI was diagnosed according to Petersen criteria. Geriatric syndromes were assessed using the Fried Frailty Phenotype, Barthel Index (ADL), GDS-15, and the Kubota Water Swallowing Test. LASSO regression was used for variab

Parkinson's disease is one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases worldwide. Swallowing difficulties present a significant challenge in the treatment of Parkinson's disease patients. Our current experimental work aimed to produce and assess a buccal polymer film containing pramipexole as the active pharmaceutical agent. This dosage form addresses the swallowing difficulties faced by Parkinson's patients, potentially eliminating inappropriate drug application and thereby improving therapeutic success. For the preparation of polymer films, chitosan was used as the film-forming agent, and

Anterior open bite is a frequent occlusal disorder that affects chewing, swallowing, speech, tooth loss, and aesthetics. Persistent infantile swallowing is a major cause of occurrence and relapse of anterior open bite after treatment. This retrospective cohort study aimed to identify factors affecting postsurgical relapse. The study included 50 surgically treated patients aged 15 to 47 with over 3-mm anterior open bite who were followed up postsurgically for 6 months. Sixteen patients (32%) relapsed. Compared with the nonrelapsed group, the relapsed group was older (35.81 versus 24.26 y; P<0.0

BACKGROUND: Dysphagia is a common condition in infants and young children, particularly among those with neurodevelopmental disabilities. The management of pediatric dysphagia requires customized approaches based on individual clinical features. This report describes our experience in managing pediatric dysphagia using a locust bean- and xanthan gum-based thickener (ThickenUp® Junior), which offers stable consistency and preserves the original taste of liquids.
CASE REPORT: Four cases were discussed to highlight the use of the new thickener. Each case illustrates different aspects of dysphagi

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the relationship between the three phases of hyoid bone movement and pharyngeal residue using the videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS).
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the data from 66 patients who underwent VFSS between April 2019 and December 2019. Hyoid bone movement was classified into three phases: upward, forward, and downward. We measured the velocity and distance of hyoid bone movement in each phase, as well as the pharyngeal residue after swallowing. The correlation between hyoid bone movement and the amount of pharyngeal residue was anal

Dermoid cysts are rare congenital lesions that arise due to the entrapment of ectodermal and mesodermal elements during embryonic development. We report the case of a 21-year-old male with HIV who presented with a longstanding sublingual mass associated with difficulty in chewing and swallowing. Clinical examination revealed a firm, non-tender, and mobile sublingual mass, accompanied by concurrent submental swelling. Ultrasonography and computed tomography of the neck were suggestive of ranula. The patient underwent surgical excision through an extraoral submental approach under general anesth

BACKGROUND: Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a genetic neuromuscular disorder causing progressive motor function loss, respiratory and swallowing impairments, and significant limitations in activities of daily living (ADLs) and social participation. While gene therapies have enhanced life expectancy, functional management remains crucial. Despite the International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health for Children and Youth (ICF-CY) being a valuable framework for patient-centered care, its integration in setting multidisciplinary rehabilitation goals for SMA patients is underexpl

Spontaneous pneumomediastinum, also called Hamman's syndrome, is an uncommon condition that results from alveolar rupture with air tracking into the mediastinum. It is usually triggered by events that raise intrathoracic pressure, but because of its rarity, it is often overlooked and may initially be confused with more serious conditions. The prognosis is generally excellent, as most cases resolve without intervention. We describe the case of a woman in her early 20s, with a history of regular e-cigarette use, who developed acute chest pain, shortness of breath, vomiting, and difficulty swallo
