Thalamocortical disconnection involved in pusher syndrome.

The presence of both isolated thalamic and isolated cortical lesions have been reported in the context of pusher syndrome-a disorder characterized by a disturbed perception of one's own upright body posture, following unilateral left- or right-sided stroke. In recent times, indirect quantification of functional and structural disconnection increases the knowledge derived from focal brain lesions by inferring subsequent brain network damage from the respective lesion. We applied both measures to a sample of 124 stroke patients to investigate brain disconnection in pusher syndrome. Our results s

First results of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, applied as a screening tool for psychosocial difficulties in pediatric audiology.

PURPOSE: Despite major improvements in rehabilitation possibilities, children with sensorineural hearing loss are at risk for psychosocial difficulties. These difficulties can impact their educational and career achievements and may be two to three times more common in children with hearing loss compared to those with normal hearing. Early identification of psychosocial difficulties can be facilitated using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and may improve outcomes and quality of life. We implemented the SDQ into the clinical follow-up of children with hearing loss in a tertia

Prophylactic Risk-Reducing Mastectomy (PRRM): A Set Practice or Catch-22 Situation in LMIC. A Single-Centre Prospective Cohort Study.

Background Pakistan's hereditary breast cancer has a higher-than-average prevalence. Our acceptability of prophylactic risk-reducing mastectomy (PRRM) still needs to be determined, and genetic testing still needs to be offered to all eligible. The aim is to determine the number of women presenting to our centre who availed of PRRM after positive genetic tests and the main reasons restraining them from considering PRRM.Materials and methods This study is a single-centre, prospective cohort. We collected data from 2017 to 2022 on BRCA1/2 and other (P/LP) gene-positive patients. Continuous variab

Short-term homeostatic visual neuroplasticity in adolescents after two hours of monocular deprivation.

In healthy adults with normal vision, temporary deprivation of one eye's visual experience produces transient yet robust homeostatic plasticity effects, where the deprived eye becomes more dominant. This shift in ocular dominance is short-lived and compensatory. Previous work shows that monocular deprivation decreases resting state gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA; inhibitory neurotransmitter) levels in visual cortex, and that those with the greatest reduction in GABA have stronger shifts due to monocular deprivation. Components of the GABAergic system in visual cortex vary with age (early childh

Factors Associated with Cigarette Smoking in Homeless Adults: Findings From an Outpatient Counseling Clinic.

BACKGROUND: Those who are homeless are 4 times more likely to smoke cigarettes than the general population in the United States. Though research has investigated smoking risk factors among homeless individuals, further investigation is needed to understand factors that can be addressed by smoking cessation programs. This study seeks to understand characteristics associated with cigarette use in clients of the counseling clinic at a Midwest homeless shelter, including whether homeless individuals who smoke demonstrate lower self-efficacy, greater social isolation, poorer perception of therapy,

Public perceptions of the association between drug effectiveness and drug novelty in France during the COVID-19 pandemic.

OBJECTIVES: During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, public debates overtly addressed the promises of new innovative drugs. Many of these debates pitted those who advocated for the development of new drugs by pharmaceutical companies against those who favored the repositioning of existing drugs. Our study explored perceptions of the association between drug novelty and effectiveness as well as perceptions of the role of the pharmaceutical industry in drug development. METHODS: Data were collected in January 2021 from a quota sample of the French population aged 18-75years (n=1

Perceived risks of transit use during COVID-19: Correlates and strategies from a case study in El Paso, Texas.

INTRODUCTION: COVID-19 has led to public transportation ridership plummeting and thus created fiscal crises and operational difficulties for transit operators. Although transit services remain essential for people with limited access to alternative transportation modes, the unfavorable public view keeps potential riders from transit. The public transportation industry is in dire need of restoring trust and recovering ridership. METHODS: In July 2020, we conducted an online survey in El Paso, Texas, to investigate COVID-19 risk perceptions related to transit use. A total of 712 valid responses

Physicians prescribe fewer analgesics during night shifts than day shifts.

Adequate pain management is one of the biggest challenges of the modern healthcare system. Physician perception of patient subjective pain, which is crucial to pain management, is susceptible to a host of potential biases. Here we explore the timing of physicians' work as a previously unrecognized source of systematic bias in pain management. We hypothesized that during night shifts, sleep deprivation, fatigue, and stress would reduce physicians' empathy for others' pain, leading to underprescription of analgesics for patient pain relief. In study 1, 67 resident physicians, either following a

The extrafoveal preview paradigm as a measure of predictive, active sampling in visual perception.

A key feature of visual processing in humans is the use of saccadic eye movements to look around the environment. Saccades are typically used to bring relevant information, which is glimpsed with extrafoveal vision, into the high-resolution fovea for further processing. With the exception of some unusual circumstances, such as the first fixation when walking into a room, our saccades are mainly guided based on this extrafoveal preview. In contrast, the majority of experimental studies in vision science have investigated "passive" behavioral and neural responses to suddenly appearing and often

Factors Associated with Women's Unwillingness to Decrease Alcohol Intake to Decrease Breast Cancer Risk.

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol intake is a known risk factor for breast cancer. National organizations recommend that women consume no more than one serving of alcohol per day, if at all; however, many women exceed this recommendation, and some are unwilling to decrease consumption. Our study sought to identify factors associated with women's unwillingness to decrease their alcohol intake to decrease their breast cancer risk. METHODS: 942 women in a screening mammography cohort were asked questions about their demographics, personal and family health history, lifestyle factors, and willingness/unwillingn
