Outer hair cell receptor current and sensorineural hearing loss.

It is argued in this paper that many nonlinear phenomena in audition and many types of sensorineural hearing loss can be explained by a disruption of the mechano-electrical transduction process at the apex of the outer hair cells. This is done using experimental data and a simple model of the active role of outer hair cells in cochlear mechanics based on our previous experiments with acoustic trauma. The causes of sensorineural loss addressed include acoustic trauma, aminoglycoside ototoxicity, intoxication with loop diuretics, hypoxia and Meniere's disease. The nonlinear phenomena discussed i

Temporary arrest of fetal movement with pancuronium bromide to enable antenatal magnetic resonance imaging of holoprosencephaly.

The well-known ability of real-time ultrasound to detect congenital abnormalities is often limited by acoustic artifact or fetal position or both. Magnetic resonance imaging can provide superior soft tissue resolution but is vulnerable to maternal and fetal motion artifact. Described and illustrated here is a case of fetal holoprosencephaly that was not of diagnostic clarity on ultrasound. The fetus was paralyzed with an intramuscular injection of pancuronium bromide before a resonance imaging study. Successful fetal paralysis with pancuronium bromide has been reported prior to a variety of fe

Ultrasonography of pathologically proved choroidal melanoma with a high-resolution small-parts scanner.

Between March 1983 and March 1985, 13 patients with choroidal melanoma underwent ultrasonography with a high-resolution small-parts scanner. The patients subsequently underwent enucleation, and the specimens were examined histopathologically. We reviewed the ultrasonograms for the presence of choroidal excavation, rupture through Bruch's membrane, retro-orbital fat shadowing, acoustic texture and retinal detachment. Comparison with the histopathological results showed that when conventional diagnostic criteria were used, most cases of rupture through Bruch's membrane were missed owing to the l

Perilymph total protein levels associated with cerebellopontine angle lesions.

The total protein levels in the perilymph of patients with acoustic neuromas, meningiomas, and Meniere's disease are contrasted. All specimens were obtained from the lateral semicircular canal during removal of the bony labyrinth. Any specimens with significant contamination by hemoglobin or serum proteins, as judged by the presence of hemoglobin/haptoglobin complexes, were discarded from this study. The findings of greatly increased perilymph protein levels in the tumor groups confirmed the reports of other workers. The levels in the Meniere's disease group compared favorably with the normal

Deep Learning-Driven Non-Contact Sound Source Localization via Multi-Axis Analysis with Laser Doppler Vibrometry.

This study presents a non-invasive sound source localization methodology that leverages multi-axis vibration analysis combined with deep learning classification. Accurate sound source localization is critical in various fields, including clinical diagnostics, where determining the origin of acoustic signals provides valuable physiological insights. Using Laser Doppler Vibrometry (LDV), sound-induced surface vibrations are measured, and directional information is extracted from the Log Power Spectra (LPS). The proposed framework integrates theoretical modeling of multi-axis vibrations, experime

Searching for Best Predictors of Paralinguistic Comprehension and Production of Emotions in Communication in Adults With Moderate Intellectual Disability.

Paralinguistic comprehension and production of emotions in communication include the skills of recognizing and interpreting emotional states with the help of facial expressions, prosody and intonation. In the relevant scientific literature, the skills of paralinguistic comprehension and production of emotions in communication are related primarily to receptive language abilities, although some authors found also their correlations with intellectual abilities and acoustic features of the voice. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate which of the mentioned variables (receptive langu

Contributions of tutor and bird's own song experience to neural selectivity in the songbird anterior forebrain.

Auditory neurons of the anterior forebrain (AF) of zebra finches become selective for song during song learning. In adults, these neurons respond more to the bird's own song (BOS) than to the songs of other zebra finches (conspecifics) or BOS played in reverse. In contrast, AF neurons from young birds (30 d) respond equally well to all song stimuli. AF selectivity develops rapidly during song learning, appearing in 60-d-old birds. At this age, many neurons also respond equally well to BOS and tutor song. These similar neural responses to BOS and tutor song might reflect contributions from both

Medial olivocochlear efferent system in humans studied with amplitude-modulated tones.

Evoked otoacoustic emissions (EOAEs) are assumed to be generated by outer hair cells (OHCs). It is now generally accepted that EOAEs represent a means of functional exploration of the active micromechanical properties of OHCs. Efferent fibers of the medial olivocochlear system (MOCS) are connected along the sides and the bases of OHCs. Some studies have shown that a suppression effect on EOAE amplitude is induced by the MOCS neurons during contralateral stimulation, presumably by modification of OHC motility. The contralateral acoustic stimuli used in experiments on the EOAE suppression effect

Nonreciprocal Wave-Mediated Interactions Power a Classical Time Crystal.

An acoustic standing wave acts as a lattice of evenly spaced potential energy wells for subwavelength-scale objects. Trapped particles interact with each other by exchanging waves that they scatter from the standing wave. Unless the particles have identical scattering properties, their wave-mediated interactions are nonreciprocal. Pairs of particles can use this nonreciprocity to harvest energy from the wave to sustain steady-state oscillations despite viscous drag and the absence of periodic driving. We show, in theory and experiment, that a minimal system composed of two acoustically levitat

A Practical Guide to Calculating Cepstral Peak Prominence in Praat.

The acoustic measure of cepstral peak prominence (CPP) is recommended for the analysis of dysphonia. Yet, clinical use of this measure is not universal, as clinicians and researchers are still learning the strengths and limitations of this measure. Furthermore, affordable access to specialized acoustic software is a significant barrier to universal CPP use. This article will provide a guide on how to calculate CPP in Praat, a free software program, using a new CPP plugin. Important external factors that could influence CPP measures are discussed, and suggestions for clinical use are provided.

Diverse identities and sites of action of cochlear neurotransmitters.

Accurate encoding of acoustic stimuli requires temporally precise responses to sound integrated with cellular mechanisms that encode the complexity of stimuli over varying timescales and orders of magnitude of intensity. Sound in mammals is initially encoded in the cochlea, the peripheral hearing organ, which contains functionally specialized cells (including hair cells, afferent and efferent neurons, and a multitude of supporting cells) to allow faithful acoustic perception. To accomplish the demanding physiological requirements of hearing, the cochlea has developed synaptic arrangements that

Lung ultrasound in pediatric radiology - cons.

In the 1990s, intensivists suggested a new type of sonography: lung ultrasound, based on artefacts that receive information even from physical acoustic phenomena not directly convertible into images of the human body. They compared the artefacts from the lung zones with no acoustic window with various computed tomography (CT) patterns. They used and still use US as a tool to evaluate patients bedside, i.e. monitoring of lung recruitment. They included Lung ultrasound in what was termed POCUS (Point-of-Care Ultrasound). Lung ultrasound has been progressively extended to paediatrics in general.

Rapid approach to complex boronic acids.

The compatibility of free boronic acid building blocks in multicomponent reactions to readily create large libraries of diverse and complex small molecules was investigated. Traditionally, boronic acid synthesis is sequential, synthetically demanding, and time-consuming, which leads to high target synthesis times and low coverage of the boronic acid chemical space. We have performed the synthesis of large libraries of boronic acid derivatives based on multiple chemistries and building blocks using acoustic dispensing technology. The synthesis was performed on a nanomole scale with high synthes

For Whom the Bubble Grows: Physical Principles of Bubble Nucleation and Dynamics in Histotripsy Ultrasound Therapy.

Histotripsy is a focused ultrasound therapy for non-invasive tissue ablation. Unlike thermally ablative forms of therapeutic ultrasound, histotripsy relies on the mechanical action of bubble clouds for tissue destruction. Although acoustic bubble activity is often characterized as chaotic, the short-duration histotripsy pulses produce a unique and consistent type of cavitation for tissue destruction. In this review, the action of histotripsy-induced bubbles is discussed. Sources of bubble nuclei are reviewed, and bubble activity over the course of single and multiple pulses is outlined. Recent

Intensimetric detection of distortion product otoacoustic emissions with ear canal calibration.

Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) have been accurately measured with an intensimetric technique, involving simultaneous measure of pressure and velocity in the ear canal, which allows one to correctly calibrate both the input stimuli and the otoacoustic emission (OAE) level. Suitable combinations of standard intensimetric quantities, active intensity and power density [Stanzial, Shiffrer, and Sacchi, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 131, 269-280 (2012)], are used to equalize the stimuli transmitted to the middle ear, and to estimate the DPOAE level emitted by the eardrum. The DPOAE intensim

Wingbeat Frequency-Sweep and Visual Stimuli for Trapping Male Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae).

Combinations of female wingbeat acoustic cues and visual cues were evaluated to determine their potential for use in male Aedes aegypti (L.) traps in peridomestic environments. A modified Centers for Disease control (CDC) light trap using a 350-500 Hz frequency-sweep broadcast from a speaker as an acoustic stimulus, combined with a black poster-board half-cylinder behind the trap as a visual stimulus, captured a significantly greater proportion of males in a laboratory arena during daylight than a CDC trap with the visual stimulus alone or a CDC trap alone without stimuli.
