Daily mortality and fine and ultrafine particles in Erfurt, Germany part I: role of particle number and particle mass.

Increases in morbidity and mortality have been observed consistently and coherently in association with ambient air pollution. A number of studies on short-term effects have identified ambient particles as a major pollutant in urban air. This study, conducted in Erfurt, Germany, investigated the association of mortality not only with ambient particles but also with gaseous pollutants and indicators of sources. Part I of this study concentrates on particles. Data were collected prospectively over a 3.5-year period from September 1995 to December 1998. Death certificates were obtained from the l

The panorama of cerebral palsy in Sweden. XI. Changing patterns in the birth-year period 2003-2006.

AIM: To describe the epidemiology of cerebral palsy (CP) in western Sweden. METHODS: A population-based study covering 94 466 live births in the area in 2003-2006. Birth characteristics and neuroimaging findings were recorded, prevalence was calculated and aetiology was analysed. RESULTS: CP was found in 206 children, including postneonatal cases, corresponding to a crude prevalence of 2.18 per 1000 live births. The gestational age-specific prevalence for <28 gestational weeks was 71.4 per 1000 live births, while it was 39.6 for 28-31 weeks, 6.4 for 32-36 weeks and 1.41 per 1000 for >36 week

Acute hospital-based services utilisation during the last year of life in New South Wales, Australia: methods for a population-based study.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to describe healthcare utilisation in the last year of life for people in Australia, to help inform health services planning. The methods and datasets that are being used are described in this paper. DESIGN/SETTING: Linked, routinely collected administrative health data are being analysed for all people who died in New South Wales (NSW), Australia's most populous state, in 2007. The data comprised linked death records (2007), hospital admissions and emergency department presentations (2006-2007) and cancer registrations (1994-2007). PARTICIPANTS: There we

Fire-related deaths in India in 2001: a retrospective analysis of data.

BACKGROUND: Hospital-based studies have suggested that fire-related deaths might be a neglected public-health issue in India. However, no national estimates of these deaths exist and the only numbers reported in published literature come from the Indian police. We combined multiple health datasets to assess the extent of the problem. METHODS: We computed age-sex-specific fire-related mortality fractions nationally using a death registration system based on medically certified causes of death in urban areas and a verbal autopsy based sample survey for rural populations. We combined these data

Animal-caused fatalities in New Mexico, 1993-2004.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate animal-caused fatalities in New Mexico using data collected during medicolegal death investigations, including toxicology, survival interval, and circumstances. METHODS: A retrospective review of the computerized database and hard copies of files from a centralized, statewide medical examiner's office, excluding deaths due to zoonotic diseases and motor vehicle collisions involving animals. RESULTS: Between 1993 and 2004, 63 deaths caused by animals were reported in New Mexico. The majority of decedents were male (46/63, 73%) and non-Hispanic white (33/63, 52%). Horses

Patient safety: a shared responsibility.

Patient safety is an essential and vital component of quality nursing care. However, the nation's health care system is prone to errors, and can be detrimental to safe patient care, as a result of basic systems flaws. A variety of stakeholders (society in general; patients; individual nurses; nursing educators, administrators, and researchers; physicians; governments and legislative bodies; professional associations; and accrediting agencies) are responsible for ensuring that patient care is safely delivered and that no harm occurs to patients. The responsibility of these stakeholders in addre

Slip, trip and fall accidents: relationship to building features and use of coroners' reports in ascribing cause.

Coroners' reports of 1035 deaths possibly related to building features were examined to assess their usefulness in identifying the cause of slip, trip and fall (STF) fatalities. Of the total, falls accounted for over 80%. Of the STF deaths, 61.4% related to falls on stairs, 6.7% to falls from steps or ladders, and 5.5% to falls from windows or roofs. About 60% of total fall fatalities involved infirm persons; alcohol was involved in 60% of the falls in the under-50 age group. Information in coroners' reports is generally insufficient to link building features to injuries; better approaches to

A population-based study of severe firearm injury among children and youth.

BACKGROUND: Firearm injuries are a major cause of pediatric mortality and morbidity in the United States. To date, population-based studies describe the epidemiology of firearm-related deaths; however, the patterns of severe, nonfatal pediatric firearm-related injuries are not as well defined. OBJECTIVES: To determine the epidemiology of severe firearm-related deaths and injuries among a statewide population of children and youth ages birth to 19 years. METHODS: Demographic, geographic, and cost data were analyzed from Connecticut death certificates for 1988 through 1992 and hospital dischar

A retrospective cohort study examining STI testing and perinatal records demonstrates reproductive health burden of chlamydia and gonorrhea.

Adverse reproductive health outcomes, such as pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy and tubal factor infertility, have been associated with Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoea infections. These reproductive health outcomes could be complemented by measuring subsequent pregnancies to assess impact on fertility. The study design was a cohort study of women in Queensland (QLD), Australia, using data linkage methods to link chlamydia and/or gonorrhea testing records (including an unexposed group undergoing full blood count tests; 2000 and 2005) with the QLD Perinatal Registry (

Injuries to Aboriginal populations living on- and off-reserve in metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas in British Columbia, Canada: Incidence and trends, 1986-2010.

BACKGROUND: Disparities in injury rates between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal populations in British Columbia (BC) are well established. Information regarding the influence of residence on disparities is scarce. We sought to fill these gaps by examining hospitalization rates for all injuries, unintentional injuries and intentional injuries across 24 years among i) Aboriginal and total populations; ii) populations living in metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas; and iii) Aboriginal populations living on- and off-reserve. METHODS: We used data spanning 1986 through 2010 from BC's universal he

The OECI model: the experience of INT Milan with a focus on the integration of psycho-oncology support.

The procedure for Organisation of European Cancer Institutes (OECI) accreditation identified the formation of MDTs for the diagnosis and scheduling of primary treatment with integration of supportive care as a key strength at Istituto Nazionale Tumori (INT). The opportunities for improvement highlighted by the OECI peer review inspired a study on the evaluation of psychological distress, with a view to integrating this evaluation into global patient management and to defining standardized criteria for the provision of psychological services. This article describes the OECI accreditation experi

Influence of interpregnancy interval on neonatal morbidity.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to assess the influence of birth spacing on neonatal morbidity, stratified by gestational age at birth. STUDY DESIGN: This was a population-based retrospective cohort study using Ohio birth records, 2006 through 2011. We compared various interpregnancy interval (IPI) lengths in multiparous mothers with the rate and risk of adverse newborn outcomes. The frequency of neonatal intensive care unit admission or neonatal transport to a tertiary care facility was calculated for births occurring after IPI lengths: <6, 6 to <12, 12 to <24, 24 to <60, and ≥60 months, and stratified

Association between hospital-level obstetric quality indicators and maternal and neonatal morbidity.

IMPORTANCE: In an effort to improve the quality of care, several obstetric-specific quality measures are now monitored and publicly reported. The extent to which these measures are associated with maternal and neonatal morbidity is not known. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether 2 Joint Commission obstetric quality indicators are associated with maternal and neonatal morbidity. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Population-based observational study using linked New York City discharge and birth certificate data sets from 2010. Confirmation of family cancer history reported in a population-based survey.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of family cancer history is essential for estimating an individual's cancer risk and making clinical recommendations regarding screening and referral to a specialty cancer genetics clinic. However, it is not clear if reported family cancer history is sufficiently accurate for this purpose. METHODS: In the population-based 2001 Connecticut Family Health Study, 1019 participants reported on 20 578 first-degree relatives (FDR) and second-degree relatives (SDR). Of those, 2605 relatives were sampled for confirmation of cancer reports on breast, colorectal, prostate, and lung

Impact of brief interventions and brief treatment on admissions to chemical dependency treatment.

This study examined two issues. One, whether individuals with possible substance use disorders were more likely to be admitted to specialized chemical dependency (CD) treatment after receiving a brief intervention (BI) - either alone or in combination with other services - than similar individuals who did not receive a BI. Two, whether participation in brief treatment (BT) following a BI was helpful in facilitating admission to CD treatment. The study took place in the emergency department (ED) of a large urban safety-net hospital where CD professionals screened patients for alcohol/drug probl

Heat wave morbidity and mortality, Milwaukee, Wis, 1999 vs 1995: an improved response?

OBJECTIVES: This study examined whether differences in heat alone, as opposed to public health interventions or other factors, accounted for the reduction in heat-related deaths and paramedic emergency medical service (EMS) runs between 1995 and 1999 during 2 heat waves occurring in Milwaukee, Wis. METHODS: Two previously described prediction models were adapted to compare expected and observed heat-related morbidity and mortality in 1999 based on the city's 1995 experience. RESULTS: Both models showed that heat-related deaths and EMS runs in 1999 were at least 49% lower than levels predicte

Birth outcomes and infant mortality by income in urban Canada, 1986.

For 1986, 219,470 live births were reported for residents of Canada's 25 Census Metropolitan Areas (CMAs). For each of these births, street address information as shown on the birth registration was used to code the census tract where the mother lived. Data by census tract were obtained for 1,650 infant deaths in 1986, and from the 1986 census for the population of 4,727,770 women aged 10-49 in 1986. Births, infant deaths and census population data (adjusted for undercount) were then used to calculate rates of infant mortality, low birth weight (LBW), very low birth weight (VLBW), prematurity,

Beyond 30-day mortality: causes and risk factors of half-year postdischarge mortality after gastric cancer surgery.

BACKGROUND: Conventional 30-day or in-hospital mortality underestimates the true burden of postoperative death after gastrectomy. This study aimed to characterize post-discharge mortality and its evolving determinants following gastric cancer surgery. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed patients who underwent gastrectomy for primary gastric cancer at Seoul National University Hospital between 2013 and 2019. Mortality data were updated through national death registry linkage with complete follow-up of at least 5 years. In-hospital deaths were reviewed using medical records, while out-of-hospi
