Disciplinary removal patterns among students with other health impairments and emotional disturbance: A three-year descriptive analysis of IDEA Part B data.

Students classified under Other Health Impairment (OHI), a category that includes Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), are frequently disciplined in school settings despite ADHD being classified as a neurodevelopmental rather than a behavioral disorder. This study examined patterns of disciplinary removal among students served under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Part B, focusing on comparisons between OHI and Emotional Disturbance (ED). Using publicly available IDEA Part B discipline data, a descriptive longitudinal analysis was conducted across three acad

Stacked-ensemble forecasting of cutaneous leishmaniasis in M'Sila Algeria with epidemiology and seasonality over three decades.

Algeria hosts the largest focus of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in North Africa and is among the most affected countries worldwide. This study aimed to comprehensively characterize demographic and clinical aspects, assess seasonal patterns, and develop a robust model to predict the monthly number of CL cases in M'Sila province, one of the consistently highest CL-burdened provinces of Algeria. Surveillance data (1995-2024, detailed demographics 2013-2024) sourced from M'Sila's Department of Public Health, were analysed. Seasonality was assessed via X-13 decomposition and seasonal amplitude (SA)

Neural and motor mechanisms of handwriting: from healthy aging to neurodegenerative disorders.

Handwriting is a complex cognitive and motor skill supported by a distributed brain network involving cortical, subcortical, and cerebellar regions responsible for planning, execution, and sensorimotor integration. Beyond its communicative role, handwriting provides biologically meaningful information about brain function and motor control, serving as a sensitive marker of both normal and pathological changes. Age-related alterations, such as reduced fine motor precision, impaired sensory feedback, and cognitive slowing, contribute to the progressive decline in handwriting fluency and legibili

Beating the Odds: A Successful Pregnancy in a Patient With ALK-Rearranged Lung Cancer on Alectinib.

The management of oncogene-driven non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) during pregnancy presents unique challenges due to limited safety data on targeted therapies. Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-rearranged NSCLC is a rare but increasingly recognized entity in young women, including during pregnancy. Here, we report the case of a 37-year-old woman diagnosed with metastatic ALK-rearranged NSCLC during her first pregnancy, who was commenced on alectinib. Following this, she had a successful second pregnancy whilst being treated with alectinib (withheld during weeks 6-10 of gestation to avoid the

Advances in the study of depression and anxiety in Parkinson's disease: A review.

Motor symptoms are central to diagnosing Parkinson's disease (PD), but depression and anxiety significantly impact the prognosis and course of PD. For many PD patients, these mental health issues may be the most crucial determinants of quality of life. This study uses an interdisciplinary approach to provide an in-depth understanding of the pathogenesis, diagnostic methods, and therapeutic strategies for depression and anxiety in PD, incorporating neuroscience, psychiatry, and psychology. It aims to offer theoretical support for developing personalized medicine and precise treatments, as well

Intensive Exposure and Response Prevention for Anxious Youth With a History of Self-Harm and Suicidality.

A growing body of research points to the increase in suicidal thoughts and behaviors, nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), and anxiety within adolescents. Given the increase in these behaviors for adolescents and young adults within the United States, it has become increasingly likely for clinicians who specialize in anxiety and obsessive-compulsive (OC) disorders to encounter adolescents and young adults with suicidal or self-harming behaviors. However, a paucity of research has examined how to best treat this population with exposure and response prevention (ERP), one of the gold-standard treatme

New approaches to categorising childhood disability: an international comparative analysis of the UNICEF/Washington Group child functioning module.

BACKGROUND: The Child Functioning Module (CFM) assesses children's functional difficulties in multiple domains (i.e., sensory, physical, communication, cognitive, psychosocial, and emotional functioning). Cut-off points are defined to identify children with disabilities, for use in international monitoring activities. While appropriate for many uses, the recommended cut-offs limit representation of the patterns of multiple co-occurring difficulties. OBJECTIVE: This paper proposes a new analytical approach that expands the identification of multiple co-occurring difficulties and tests it, usin

Feasibility and Acceptability of a Technology-Mediated Fall Risk Prevention Intervention for Older Adults With Mild Cognitive Impairment.

BACKGROUND: Falls and fall-related injuries are significant public health issues for adults 65 years of age and older. The annual direct medical costs in the United States as a result of falls are estimated to exceed $50 billion, and this estimate does not include the indirect costs of disability, dependence, and decreased quality of life. This project targets community-dwelling older adults (OA) with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) who are socially vulnerable and thus at high risk for falling. METHODS: We have developed an innovative technology-supported nursing-driven intervention called Se

The Goal Attainment Scale in Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 3: Exploration of Feasibility and Content Validity.

Progress in therapeutic development in spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3) underscores the need for trial readiness and outcome measures that accurately reflect patient-relevant disease progression. The Goal Attainment Scale (GAS) has been proposed to capture interindividual variability within a unified, patient-centered metric. However, concerns about its feasibility and clinimetric properties have limited its use in clinical trials so far. This exploratory study assesses the feasibility and content validity of the GAS interview in SCA3. The GAS interview was conducted by a single assessor i

[Nutrition therapy for the management of pathological nutritional status in multimorbid elderly patients during hospitalization].

Population ageing, increasing prevalence of chronic diseases and multimorbidity – and the associated healthcare costs – require a multidisciplinary approach in health care. Major nutrition-related geriatric challenges such as anorexia of ageing and malnutrition, dysphagia, sarcopenia, frailty, sarcopenic obesity, metabolic syndrome, as well as drug–nutrient interactions and iatrogenia form vicious circles that define the main focus areas of nutritional therapy. In 2023, the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism provided a new guideline on the nutrition of multimorbid hospitali

Psychopathological Influences on Surgical and Clinical Outcomes in Lumbar Disk Herniation: Prediction Models and Literature Analysis.

Background/Objectives: Lumbar disk herniation (LDH) significantly affects quality of life due to lower back and radiating leg pain. Surgical intervention, such as discectomy, is effective for symptom relief when conservative measures fail; however, psychological factors like anxiety, depression, and maladaptive coping strategies may negatively impact surgical outcomes. This study aims to assess the role of preoperative psychological evaluations in predicting postoperative recovery and to identify key psychological and functional predictors of surgical success. Methods: A prospective study was

Predicting and improving diagnosis of tuberculosis outcomes in South Africa using machine learning techniques.

The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare of South Africa has made significant efforts to combat tuberculosis (TB), guided by the National Strategic Plan for addressing HIV, STIs, and TB. However, progress in preventing and eradicating TB has been seriously hindered by reliance on ineffective diagnostic methods. This study aimed to predict and improve TB diagnosis in South Africa using machine learning techniques. Data from the National Income Dynamics Survey, conducted by the Southern African Labour and Development Research Units, were analyzed. The dataset underwent a 70:30 train-test split
