Get In, Get Tested, Get Care: STD Services in Urban Urgent Care Centers.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence indicates increased use of urgent care centers (UCCs) for sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing. We sought to learn more about STD services in UCCs in a large metropolitan area. METHOD: Using a modified rapid gap assessment approach, we interviewed staff from 19 UCCs in metro Atlanta, GA. The UCCs were identified using two online search engines. We focused on a 50-mile radius around Atlanta. We then excluded duplicates and closed UCCs, and the ones outside Atlanta's five contiguous counties. Using a prioritization process, we visited UCCs in or adjacent to are

Infertile Couples Prefer Twins: Analysis of Their Reasons and Clinical Characteristics Related to This Preference.

BACKGROUND: The number of multiple pregnancies has been significantly increased in the last decades due to assisted reproduction techniques development. Compared to singleton, twins and multiple pregnancies are associated to more complications and risks for both mother and children. The objective of this study was to examine the proportion of patients preferring a multiple birth over a singleton after an IVF/ICSI attempt, their reasons and the influence of socio-demographic and clinical parameters on their preference. METHODS: A prospective study was conducted in two different Spanish centers

Acceptability of multipurpose human papillomavirus vaccines among providers and mothers of adolescent girls: A mixed-methods study in five countries.

INTRODUCTION: Multipurpose vaccines (MPVs) could be formulated to prevent multiple sexually transmitted infections simultaneously. Little is known about acceptability of MPVs among vaccine health care providers (HCPs) or mothers of adolescent girls. METHODS: 151 adolescent vaccine providers and 118 mothers of adolescent girls aged 9-14 were recruited from five geographically-diverse countries: Argentina, Malaysia, South Africa, South Korea, and Spain. We assessed providers' preferences for single-purpose human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine versus MPVs (including HPV+herpes simplex virus (HSV)-

Geographic dimensions of a health network dedicated to occupational and work related diseases.

BACKGROUND: Although introduced nearly 40 years ago, Geographic Information Systems (GISs) have never been used to study Occupational Health information regarding the different types, scale or sources of data. The geographic distribution of occupational diseases and underlying work activities were always analyzed independently. Our aim was to consider the French Network of Occupational Disease (OD) clinics, namely the "French National OD Surveillance and Prevention Network" (rnv3p) as a spatial object in order to describe its catchment. METHODS: We mapped rnv3p observations at the workplace l

Characteristics of people dying by suicide after job loss, financial difficulties and other economic stressors during a period of recession (2010-2011): A review of coroners׳ records.

BACKGROUND: Suicide rates increase during periods of economic recession, but little is known about the characteristics of people whose deaths are related to recession, the timing of risk in relation to job loss, the nature of financial stresses and the sources of help individuals used. METHODS: We extracted information on social and economic circumstances, mental health and help-seeking from the coroners׳ records of 286 people who died by suicide in 2010 and 2011 in four areas of England. We graded each death on a 5-point scale of 'recession-relatedness', measuring the extent to which recessi

DATA SOURCES: MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and CINAHL were searched through October 2013 for original research studies published in English using combinations of the terms pregnancy, prenatal, or pregnancy outcomes; anxiety disorder; and generalized anxiety. Reference lists of included studies were hand-searched and a PubMed search for in-process reports was conducted. STUDY SELECTION: Relevant studies of anxiety disorders during pregnancy as determined by diagnostic interview were included if they reported on

Cost-effectiveness of spinal cord stimulation therapy in management of chronic pain.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of spinal cord stimulation (SCS) and conventional medical management (CMM) compared with CMM alone for patients with failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS), complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), peripheral arterial disease (PAD), and refractory angina pectoris (RAP). DESIGN: Markov models were developed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of SCS vs CMM alone from the perspective of a Canadian provincial Ministry of Health. Each model followed costs and outcomes in 6-month cycles. Health effects were expressed as quality-adjusted life years (QALYs). C

Post-licensure rapid immunization safety monitoring program (PRISM) data characterization.

BACKGROUND: The Post-Licensure Rapid Immunization Safety Monitoring (PRISM) program is the immunization safety monitoring component of FDA's Mini-Sentinel project, a program to actively monitor the safety of medical products using electronic health information. FDA sought to assess the surveillance capabilities of this large claims-based distributed database for vaccine safety surveillance by characterizing the underlying data. METHODS: We characterized data available on vaccine exposures in PRISM, estimated how much additional data was gained by matching with select state and local immunizat

Knowledge, attitude, perception of malaria and evaluation of malaria parasitaemia among pregnant women attending antenatal care clinic in metropolitan Lagos, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Little information exists on the compliance of pregnant women to malaria management in malaria endemic countries. This study was designed to access knowledge, attitude, perception and home management of malaria among consenting pregnant women attending antenatal care (ANC) clinic. METHODS: In total, 350 pregnant women were randomly recruited during their ANC Clinic in Lagos. Structured questionnaires were administered in a two-stages research design; first during their early months of ANC visit and the second approximately 1-2 months before delivery. Information on oc

Privacy-maintaining propensity score-based pooling of multiple databases applied to a study of biologics.

INTRODUCTION: A large study on the safety of biologics required pooling of data from multiple data sources, but while extensive confounder adjustment was necessary, private, individual-level covariate information could not be shared. OBJECTIVES: To describe the methods of pooling data that investigators considered, and to detail the strengths and limitations of the chosen method: a propensity score (PS)-based approach that allowed for full multivariate adjustment without compromising patient privacy. RESEARCH DESIGN: The project had a central data coordinating center responsible for collecti

Health outcomes of low-dose ionizing radiation exposure among medical workers: a cohort study of the Canadian national dose registry of radiation workers.

BACKGROUND: Medical workers can be exposed to low-dose ionizing radiation from various sources. The potential cancer risks associated with ionizing radiation exposure have been derived from cohort studies of Japanese atomic bomb survivors who had experienced acute, high-level exposure. Since such extrapolations are subject to uncertainty, direct information is needed on the risk associated with chronic low-dose occupational exposure to ionizing radiation. OBJECTIVES: To determine the occupational doses of ionizing radiation and examine possible associations with mortality rates and cancer inc
