Medically Tailored Meals for Patients With Cirrhosis and Hepatic Encephalopathy: The BRAINFOOD Proof-of-concept Trial.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Guidelines recommend that patients with hepatic encephalopathy (HE) receive a high-protein diet (roughly 1 g/kg actual body weight). Concommitant sodium restriction, low health literacy, and food insecurity limit patients' ability to meet this goal. We aimed to determine the feasibility of home-delivered high-protein medically tailored meals (MTMs) for patients with a recent episode of overt HE. METHODS: We enrolled patients with prior overt HE on active HE therapy in a 6-month trial of MTM. All received 21 home-delivered meals/week with protein snacks (mid-day and bedtim

A terminal metabolite of niacin promotes vascular inflammation and contributes to cardiovascular disease risk.

Despite intensive preventive cardiovascular disease (CVD) efforts, substantial residual CVD risk remains even for individuals receiving all guideline-recommended interventions. Niacin is an essential micronutrient fortified in food staples, but its role in CVD is not well understood. In this study, untargeted metabolomics analysis of fasting plasma from stable cardiac patients in a prospective discovery cohort (n = 1,162 total, n = 422 females) suggested that niacin metabolism was associated with incident major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). Serum levels of the terminal metabolites of e

Manganese-induced hyperactivity and dopaminergic dysfunction depend on age, sex and YAC128 genotype.

Manganese (Mn) is an essential micronutrient but is neurotoxic in excess. Environmental and genetic factors influence vulnerability to Mn toxicity, including sex, age, and the autosomal dominant mutation that causes Huntington disease (HD). To better understand the differential effects of Mn in wild-type (WT) versus YAC128 mice, we examined impacts of Mn exposure across different ages and sexes on disease-relevant behavioral tasks and dopamine dynamics. Young (3-week) and aged (12-month) WT and YAC128 mice received control (70 ppm) or high (2400 ppm) Mn diet for 8 weeks followed by a battery o

Effects of various Fe compounds on the bioavailability of Pb contained in orally ingested soils in mice: Mechanistic insights and health implications.

Reducing lead (Pb) exposure via oral ingestion of contaminated soils is highly relevant for child health. Elevating dietary micronutrient iron (Fe) intake can reduce Pb oral bioavailability while being beneficial for child nutritional health. However, the practical performance of various Fe compounds was not assessed. Here, based on mouse bioassays, ten Fe compounds applied to diets (100-800 mg Fe kg-1) reduced Pb oral relative bioavailability (RBA) in two soils variedly depending on Fe forms. EDTA-FeNa was most efficient, which reduced Pb-RBA in a soil from 79.5 ± 14.7 % to 23.1 ± 2.72 % (71

Effects of Iron Supplementation on Testicular Function and Spermatogenesis of Iron-Deficient Rats.

Iron deficiency is the most common micronutrient deficiency in the world. Previous studies have shown that iron deficiency increases oxidative stress and decreases antioxidant enzymes, and studies of male infertility indicated that oxidative stress may affect male reproductive functions. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of iron supplementation on spermatogenesis and testicular functions in iron-deficient rats. Three-week-old male Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into two groups: an iron-adequate control (AI group, 35 ppm FeSO4) and an iron-deficient group (ID

Cross-sectional association between vitamin B12 status and probable postpartum depression in Indian women.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin B12 is an essential micronutrient for neurological function, as it leads to the regeneration of methionine from homocysteine, which is precursor of biologically active molecule S-Adenosyl Methionine (SAM). Pregnancy is a state of increased demand and delayed postpartum repletion of nutrients may predispose women to depression. METHODS: We included women who visited the hospital at 6-weeks postpartum for a regular checkup. Inclusion criteria were age (18-50 years), and willingness to donate venous sample for analysis. Exclusion criteria included previous history of mood dis

Selenium source and level on performance, selenium retention and biochemical responses of young broiler chicks.

BACKGROUND: Selenium (Se) has been recognized as an essential micronutrient for nearly all forms of life. In recent decades, broiler responses to dietary Se supplemental levels and sources have received considerable attention. On environmental grounds, organic trace mineral utilization in practical broiler feeds has been defended due to its higher bioavailability. In such feeds, trace minerals are provided simultaneously in the same supplement as inorganic salts or organic chelates, a fact commonly ignored in assays conducted to validate organic trace mineral sources. The current assay aimed t
