Syndemic Psychosocial Health Conditions Associated with Recent Client-Perpetrated Violence Against Female Entertainment and Sex Workers in Cambodia.

Female entertainment and sex workers (FESW) are vulnerable to violence, which impedes safer sex behaviors and increases risk of HIV. FESW are also disproportionately affected by co-occurring psychosocial health conditions, including substance use, depression, and economic insecurity, which increased risk of exposure to violence. We used a syndemic framework to examine the effects of co-occurring psychosocial conditions on the risk of client-perpetrated physical and sexual violence against FESW. Data were collected among 1198 Cambodian FESW on recent client-perpetrated physical and sexual viole

Longitudinal associations between neuropsychological functioning and medical responsibility in youth with spina bifida: The moderational role of parenting behaviors.

For youth with spina bifida (SB), the transfer of medical responsibilities from parent- to self-management is an important component of autonomy development. Youth with SB are at risk for neurocognitive impairments with inattention and executive dysfunction, which may impact their ability to take responsibility for medical tasks. However, adaptive parenting may buffer against the negative impact of executive/attentional dysfunction on levels of medical responsibility. Thus, this study examined the moderating roles of parenting behaviors and child age on the longitudinal associations between ne

An instrument to assess HIV-related knowledge and adjustment to HIV+ status, and their association with anti-retroviral adherence.

BACKGROUND: Findings on the association between health literacy and anti-retroviral (ARV) adherence are inconsistent. Health literacy is usually operationalized with simple tests of basic literacy, but more complex conceptions of health literacy include content knowledge. People living with chronic illness also conceptualize and experience illness in ways other than biomedical or mechanistic models of disease. OBJECTIVE: There are no instruments that comprehensively assess knowledge of people living with HIV concerning HIV disease and treatment; or psychological adjustment to being HIV+. Litt

Feasibility and acceptability of an integrated behavioral medicine service within a post-bariatric surgery clinic.

BACKGROUND: Long-term medical and psychological follow-up after weight loss surgery is associated with improved patient outcomes. Weight regain after weight loss surgery is a common concern that has behavioral and psychological components; however, most patients do not attend behavioral medicine (BMED) follow-up appointments post-surgery. Innovative treatment models are needed to improve access to BMED to optimize long-term outcomes. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the feasibility and acceptability of an integrated BMED service within a bariatric surgery clinic. SETTING: University m

Exploring Multiple Forms of Intimate Partner Violence in a Gender and Racially/Ethnically Diverse Sample of Transgender Adults.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is highly prevalent in transgender (trans) populations in the United States; however, details about its manifestations and correlates have not been well captured. Using data from the 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey, we analyzed weighted data from 23,999 adult transgender participants to estimate the prevalence and explore correlates of five IPV subtypes: psychological IPV, physical IPV, trans-related IPV, stalking, and forced sex committed by an intimate partner. Regression models examined race/ethnicity, gender identity, past-year incarceration, past-year sex work

Effect of exogenous progesterone administration on cigarette smoking-related symptomology in oral contraceptive users who smoke.

Cigarette smoking-related symptomatology (e.g., craving; SRS) is linked to relapse after a quit attempt. SRS varies by menstrual phase, possibly due to variations in sex hormones (e.g., progesterone), though much of the research to-date has relied on observations from the menstrual cycle acting as a proxy for hormone levels. The goal of this study was to examine the effect of exogenous progesterone on SRS during ad libitum smoking and following overnight abstinence. Oral contraceptive users who smoked completed two 9-day crossover testing periods (7 days of ad libitum smoking and 2 days follow

Efficacy of Alternative Cardiac Rehabilitation Delivery Formats in Improving Psychological Symptoms after Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting.

Background: Health-care systems always strive for alternative cardiac rehabilitation (CR) models to ensure that options available to patients better fit their needs, risk factor profiles, and preferences. We assessed the effects of hospital-based cardiac rehabilitation (HBCR) and hybrid cardiac rehabilitation (HCR) on psychological symptoms (i.e., anxiety, depression, and stress) among patients following coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG). Methods: This cross-sectional study recruited 115 CABG patients who were referred to the Department of Cardiac Rehabilitation at Imam Ali Hospital

Preventing Unintended Pregnancy Among Young Sexually Active Women: Recognizing the Role of Violence, Self-Esteem, and Depressive Symptoms on Use of Contraception.

OBJECTIVES: Ineffective contraceptive use among young sexually active women is extremely prevalent and poses a significant risk for unintended pregnancy (UP). Ineffective contraception involves the use of the withdrawal method or the inconsistent use of other types of contraception (i.e., condoms and birth control pills). This investigation examined violence exposure and psychological factors related to ineffective contraceptive use among young sexually active women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Young, nonpregnant sexually active women (n = 315) were recruited from an urban family planning clinic i

Concurrent varenicline and prolonged exposure for patients with nicotine dependence and PTSD: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Prevalence of smoking among individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is disproportionately high, and PTSD is associated with especially poor response to smoking cessation treatment. OBJECTIVE: The current study examined whether integrating treatments for smoking cessation (varenicline plus smoking cessation counseling; VARCC) and PTSD (prolonged exposure therapy; PE) enhances smoking outcomes among smokers diagnosed with PTSD. METHOD: 142 adults with nicotine dependence (ND) and PTSD were randomized to a treatment program consisting of varenicline, smoking cessation

A randomized trial of an optimism training intervention in patients with heart disease.

OBJECTIVE: Optimism is prospectively and independently associated with superior cardiac outcomes, but there has been minimal study of optimism-specific interventions in persons with cardiovascular illness. We aimed to examine the feasibility and impact of an optimism-promoting program among patients with heart disease in a randomized controlled trial. METHODS: Participants (N=61) were outpatients, age 35-60, with coronary artery disease who were randomized to an 8-week in-person group-based optimism training intervention or an attention-matched educational control condition. Feasibility was a

Patients with established cancer cachexia lack the motivation and self-efficacy to undertake regular structured exercise.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with advanced cancer frequently suffer a decline in activities associated with involuntary loss of weight and muscle mass (cachexia). This can profoundly affect function and quality of life. Although exercise participation can maintain physical and psychological function in patients with cancer, uptake is low in cachectic patients who are underrepresented in exercise studies. To understand how such patients' experiences are associated with exercise participation, we investigated exercise history, self-confidence, and exercise motivations in patients with established cancer

The impact of extrafamilial victimization and poly-victimization on the psychological well-being of English young people.

Childhood victimization impacts on the well-being of children and young people, particularly those experiencing an extreme amount of different types of victimization (i.e., poly-victims). However, limited attention has been given to the impact of different categories of extrafamilial victimization (experienced outside of the family), particularly in the UK. The intricacies of the significant detrimental impact poly-victimization has on victims are also poorly understood. In this study, 730 young people, aged 13 to 16 years (mean 13.8 years), from one county in the UK, were surveyed about their

Predictors of dropout and bariatric surgery in Icelandic morbidly obese female patients.

BACKGROUND: Little is known on how morbidly obese individuals who participate in different treatments differ in relation to anthropometrical measurements and psychological characteristics. In the present study we investigated attrition and treatment choice, i.e., bariatric surgery and conservative treatment, of morbidly obese subjects. METHODS: Data was collected during screening from 292 morbidly obese women who participated in a weight loss program at an Icelandic rehabilitation center. Information were available on body composition, fasting blood samples, psychological characteristics, med

Sex and sexual orientation disparities in adverse childhood experiences and early age at sexual debut in the United States: results from a nationally representative sample.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been linked to early sexual debut, which has been found to be associated with multiple adverse health outcomes. Sexual minorities and men tend to have earlier sexual debut compared to heterosexual populations and women, respectively. However, studies examining the association between ACEs and early sexual debut among men and sexual minorities are lacking. The aim of this study was to examine the sex and sexual orientation disparities in the association between ACEs and age at sexual debut. Data were obtained from Wave 2 of the National Epidemiologic Su

Intimate partner violence and risky sexual behaviors among Iranian women with substance use disorders.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) and risky sexual behaviors are serious and overlapping public health problems that disproportionately affect drug-involved women. Despite the fact that drug-using women experience extensive IPV, to date, no studies have investigated the association of IPV and risky sexual behaviors among drug-using women in Iran. METHODS: Drug-using women (N =120) were recruited from a rehabilitation center in Tehran from March to October, 2009. The Revised Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS2), a standardized questionnaire, was used to collect data regarding violence. We u

A genetically informed test of cholesterol levels and self-control, depressive symptoms, antisocial behavior, and neuroticism.

BACKGROUND: Low cholesterol levels have been found to be associated with a wide range of behavioral problems, including violent and criminal behavior, and a wide range of psychological problems including impulsivity, depression, and other internalizing problems. The casual mechanisms underlying these associations remain largely unknown, but genetic factors may play a role in the etiology of such associations as previous research has found significant genetic influence on cholesterol levels and various deleterious behavioral and psychological outcomes. The current study addressed this existing

Summary of findings from the OPPERA prospective cohort study of incidence of first-onset temporomandibular disorder: implications and future directions.

UNLABELLED: Papers in this issue investigate when and how putative risk factors influence development of first-onset, painful temporomandibular disorder (TMD). The results represent first findings from the Orofacial Pain: Prospective Evaluation and Risk Assessment (OPPERA) prospective cohort study that monitored 2,737 men and women aged 18 to 44 years recruited at 4 U.S. study sites. During a median 2.8-year follow-up period, 260 participants developed TMD. The average incidence rate of 4% per annum was influenced by a broad range of phenotypic risk factors including sociodemographic character
