OBJECTIVE: To study the biological behavior of cardial cancer and its influence on surgical management.
METHODS: Complete clinicopathologic data of 46 cases with cardial cancer undergoing radical gastrectomy was investigated retrospectively. The relationships between tumor Borrmann type, depth of invasion, growth pattern, lymph node metastasis and 5-year survival rate postoperative were analyzed.

A rare case of thymic carcinoma with an intraluminal growth to the left brachiocephalic vein, the superior vena cava and the right atrium is described. Venogram and cardiac echogram were useful for evaluating the vascular permeation of the tumor. Chemoprevention for breast cancer is both old and new. It has long been appreciated that early ovarian ablation dramatically reduces the incidence of breast cancer in premenopausal women. PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to investigate the biological and molecular basis of intraepithelial spreading (IES) of carcinomas in situ (CIS) of the urinary bladder, which were considered to be precursors of nodular invasive carcinomas.

BACKGROUND: Diaphragmatic invasion from lung cancer (T3-diaphragm) is a rare occurrence reported to portend a poor prognosis.
METHODS: Fifteen patients with T3-diaphragm (14 males, 1 female; median age, 64 years) were surgically treated over a twenty-year period by en bloc resection (14 patients). One patient was only explored. Pathologic stage IIB (T3N0) was found in 11 patients. A partial infiltration of the diaphragm was observed in 3 patients, whereas full-depth invasion was found in 12. Diaphragmatic reconstruction was done primarily in 9 patients, and, by prosthetic material in 5.

Meningiomas account for approximately 18 to 19 per cent of all brain tumours. Although they can arise in numerous locations, meningiomas of the internal auditory canal (IAC) are rare. PURPOSE: We report on our personal experience with the radiologic and CT demonstration of the traspyloric duodenal spread of gastric carcinoma, whose relative frequency and prognostic value are recent literature data.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In the last 4 years we submitted to double contrast studies of the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract 49 gastric carcinoma patients with antrum involvement. Twenty-one cases were staged with CT performed with gastric water distension, pharmacological hypotonia and dynamic contrast agent perfusion. Finally, 41 patients underwent surgical treatment.

This report describes the surgical procedure consisting of larynx-preserving resection of the cervical esophagus and satisfactory lymphadenectomy. The sternum was split at the level of the 3rd intercostal space, which allowed an upper-mediastinal lymphadenectomy to be performed easily. The cervical esophagus was reconstructed using a free jejunal autograft.
