The utility of artificial intelligence in characterization and detecting causes of macular edema: A spectral-domain OCT-based algorithm study.

BACKGROUND: Macular Edema (ME), a prevalent cause of vision loss, can arise from various retinal conditions, most notably diabetic macular edema (DME) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Accurate and timely differentiation among these causes is necessary for appropriate treatment; however, it remains a diagnostic challenge. This research addresses the gap in automated ME classification by developing and evaluating a deep learning framework capable of distinguishing between DME, AMD, and normal retinal conditions using optical coherence tomography (OCT) images. METHODS: A retrospective

OcuMDNet: A lightweight CNN for robust multi-disease retinal diagnosis with cross-dataset reliability.

This study aims to develop a lightweight convolutional network for the classification of multiple retinal diseases using fundus images and to evaluate cross-dataset generalization under strict label alignment. We introduce OcuMDNet (Ocular Multi-Disease Net), a compact convolutional neural network (CNN) specifically designed for fundus imagery, incorporating batch normalization and dropout for regularization. A standardized processing pipeline is employed, which includes cropping and resizing images to 224 × 224 pixels, applying contrast-limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE), and per

Interpretable deep learning for personalized energy expenditure prediction using ECG and acceleration signals in incremental exercise.

Energy expenditure (EE) assessment is crucial in both sports science and health management. However, current EE prediction models often overlook individual differences and lack dynamic correlation analysis between multi-modal data and EE. Building upon previous research, this study proposes a personalized dynamic-static feature fusion framework, which integrates two types of information to improve energy expenditure (EE) prediction during incremental load exercise: dynamic signals (physiological signals recorded continuously during exercise, such as tri-axial acceleration and electrocardiograp

Early detection of self-care impairments in children with disabilities using an enhanced SE network optimized by ISCO algorithm.

Children with disabilities frequently encounter considerable obstacles in acquiring self-care skills, which are vigorous for developing their independence and overall quality of life. The early detection of self-care deficits is important for prompt intervention and assistance. Nevertheless, current valuation techniques predominantly depend on manual evaluations, which can be subjective, labor-intensive, and often inadequate in recognizing subtle deficits. The purpose of this study is to create an artificial intelligence (AI)-enhanced self-care prediction system for children with disabilities,

Predicting and classifying type 2 diabetes using a transparent ensemble model combining random forest, k-nearest neighbor, and neural networks.

Diabetes is one of the major health challenges in today's world, since chronic elevation of blood sugar can cause serious and sometimes irreparable damage to organs such as the heart, kidneys, and nervous system. Early detection of this disease plays a vital role in reducing its complications. However, machine learning and deep learning models often face distrust in medical settings due to their opaque, "black-box" nature. The aim of this study was to combine three machine learning algorithms using stacking and voting methods to propose a model for type 2 diabetes detection, and to increase tr

Development and temporal validation of a deep learning model for automatic fetal biometry from ultrasound videos.

OBJECTIVES: The objective was to develop an artificial intelligence (AI)-based system, using deep neural network (DNN) technology, to automatically detect standard fetal planes during video capture, measure fetal biometry parameters and estimate fetal weight. METHODS: A standard plane recognition DNN was trained to classify ultrasound images into four categories: head circumference (HC), abdominal circumference (AC), femur length (FL) standard planes, or 'other'. The recognized standard plane images were subsequently processed by three fetal biometry DNNs, automatically measuring HC, AC and F

Detection of pediatric developmental delay with machine learning technologies.

OBJECTIVE: Accurate identification of children who will develop delay (DD) is challenging for therapists because recent studies have reported that children who underwent early intervention achieved more favorable outcomes than those who did not. In this study, we have investigated how the frequencies of three types of therapy, namely the physical therapy, the occupational therapy, and the speech therapy, received by a child can be exploited to predict whether the child suffers from DD or not. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is of high interest as these features can be obtained with

Investigating action topography in visual cortex and deep artificial neural networks.

High-level visual cortex contains category-selective areas embedded within larger-scale topographic maps like animacy and real-world size. Here, we propose action as a key organizing factor shaping visual cortex topography and assess the ability of topographic deep artificial neural networks (DANNs) in capturing this organization. Using fMRI, we examined responses to images of body-parts and objects with different degrees of action properties. In left lateral occipitotemporal cortex, we identified a topographically-organized action gradient, with overlapping activations for bodies, hands, tool

Artificial intelligence-assisted optimization of Eichhornia crassipes extracts and evaluation of their biological activities.

In this research, the extraction conditions for Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms were optimized using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and Artificial Neural Network-Genetic Algorithm (ANN-GA) techniques to enhance the biological efficacy of the extracts. The optimization focused on three key variables: extraction temperature, duration, and the ethanol-to-water solvent ratio. Through the ANN-GA model, the optimal parameters were identified as 56.85 °C for temperature, 7.62 h for extraction time, and 23.93% for the ethanol/water proportion. The obtained extracts showed statistically signific

Convolutional long short-term memory neural network integrated with classifier in classifying type of asynchrony breathing in mechanically ventilated patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Asynchronous breathing (AB) occurs when a mechanically ventilated patient's breathing does not align with the mechanical ventilator (MV). Asynchrony can negatively impact recovery and outcome, and/or hinder MV management. A model-based method to accurately classify different AB types could automate detection and have a measurable clinical impact. METHODS: This study presents an approach using a 1-dimensional (1D) of airway pressure data as an input to the convolutional long short-term memory neural network (CNN-LSTM) with a classifier method to classify AB types into

Recurrent issues with deep neural network models of visual recognition.

Object recognition requires flexible and robust information processing, especially in view of the challenges posed by naturalistic visual settings. The ventral stream in visual cortex is provided with this robustness by its recurrent connectivity. Recurrent deep neural networks (DNNs) have recently emerged as promising models of the ventral stream, surpassing feedforward DNNs in the ability to account for brain representations. In this study, we asked whether recurrent DNNs could also better account for human behaviour during visual recognition. We assembled a stimulus set that includes manipu

The role of spectral characteristics of urine in bladder cancer diagnostics.

Finding a non-invasive diagnostic method with sufficient diagnostic power is crucial for early detection of malignant tumor diseases. The main goal of the presented work is to observe changes in the spectral characteristics of urine between patients diagnosed with bladder cancer and control subjects. Data were obtained through fluorescence spectroscopy and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The data obtained from multiple fluorescence spectra measurements were graphically represented as excitation-emission matrices (EEMs). In both EEMs and chromatograms, statistically significant p

From Support Vector Machines to Neural Networks: Advancing Automated Velopharyngeal Dysfunction Detection in Patients With Cleft Palate.

BACKGROUND: The generation of intelligible speech is the single most important outcome after cleft palate repair. The development of velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD) compromises the outcome, and the burden of VPD remains largely unknown in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). To scale up VPD care in these areas, we continue to explore the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) for automatic detection of VPD from speech samples alone. METHODS: An age-matched, single-institution cohort of 60 patients (30 control, 30 with VPD after cleft palate repair) generated appro

Classification of anterior cruciate ligament tears in knee magnetic resonance images using pre-trained model and custom model.

An anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear is a prevalent knee injury among athletes, and aged people with osteoporosis are at increased risk for it. For early detection and treatment, precise and rapid identification of ACL tears is significant. A fully automated system that can identify ACL tear is necessary to aid healthcare providers in determining the nature of injuries detected on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans. Two Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), the pretrained model and the CustomNet model are trained and tested using 581 MRI scans of the knee. Feature extraction is done wit
