Patient Perspectives on Their Home Peritoneal Dialysis Experience: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: The 2019 Advancing American Kidney Health initiative greatly incentivized increased home dialysis. However, peritoneal dialysis (PD) uptake in the United States has increased only modestly, and, although PD is associated with quality-of-life benefits for many patients, individual patient experiences of disease and treatment burden can vary greatly. Gaps remain in understanding the lived experience and impact of PD on patients. METHODS: Current and former PD patients (age ≥18 years) who received PD in 2019 or later were recruited between 2022 and 2025. Semi-structured interviews ex

RORγ Hijacks HIF1α to Promote Peritoneal Metastasis of Gastric Cancer.

UNLABELLED: Peritoneal metastasis (PM) is the most common and lethal form of metastasis in gastric cancer, highlighting an urgent need for treatment strategies. In this study, we identified retinoic acid receptor-related orphan receptor gamma (RORγ) as a key driver of PM in gastric cancer tumors. Integrative bioinformatics and IHC analyses revealed aberrant upregulation of RORγ in gastric cancer tumors, particularly in metastatic lesions. Functionally, elevated RORγ promoted gastric cancer cell adaptation to hypoxia and accelerated PM formation in vivo. The hypoxic microenvironment in gastric

[Percutaneous placement of a peritoneal dialysis catheter outside the operating room].

Since May 2023, the Caen University Hospital has developed an innovative program for the placement of percutaneous peritoneal dialysis catheters in a dedicated area outside the operating room. This approach is transforming medical and nursing practices, streamlining care delivery times, and empowering teams. Nurses play a central role-both technical and clinical-and are fully involved in ensuring the safety of the patient's care pathway.

Current approaches to prescription and optimization of peritoneal dialysis: a practical review.

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is an established form of kidney replacement therapy that offers patients the possibility of homebased treatment with significant flexibility and autonomy. Despite its advantages, many physicians in training and those just starting their clinical practice feel uncertain when prescribing PD, given the technical aspects, individualized adjustments, and the variety of modalities available. This manuscript provides a practical and didactic overview of how to prescribe PD, focusing on both continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and automated peritoneal dialysis (A

A sustainable future for peritoneal dialysis: a patient survey on green nephrology.

INTRODUCTION: Climate change poses an increasing threat to global health, demanding urgent action from healthcare systems. Nephrology contributes substantially to healthcare-related environmental impact and must adopt sustainable practices. Peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients are key stakeholders in these efforts, yet their perspectives remain underexplored. This study assessed PD patients' practices and attitudes regarding recycling, transport logistics, and digital healthcare. METHODS: An observational study was conducted in two centers using a 17-item questionnaire developed through literatu

Peritoneal Dialysis in the Transplant Pathway: From Waitlist to Graft Failure.

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is recognized as a well-established and safe modality of replacement therapy for patients with end-stage kidney disease. Recently, its use has attracted growing interest as a bridge to kidney transplantation (KTx). Given several advantageous pathophysiological characteristics, such as continuous purification, preservation of residual kidney function, and reduced cardiovascular impact, PD may be associated with clinical characteristics that could facilitate pre-transplant management; . However, clinical evidence remains limited and fragmented, and shared practical frame

The Impact of Balance Solution on the Outcomes of Incident Peritoneal Dialysis Patients.

PURPOSE: This study investigates the impact of Balance solutions on the risks of technique failure, death, and the first episode of peritonitis in incident peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. METHODS: From the database of Taiwan's National Health Insurance, patients with newly diagnosed end-stage kidney disease receiving PD for at least 90 days and treated with Balance solutions at the initiation of PD from 2009 to 2020 were identified. For each Balance solution user, 10 patients using conventional PD solutions, matched by the index year, were randomly selected as the control cohort. Risks of …

Electromyographic findings and frailty in hemodialysis vs peritoneal dialysis patients.

BACKGROUND: To compare the effects of hemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD) on peripheral nervous system function and frailty in non-diabetic end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. METHODS: This prospective, single-center, cross-sectional study consecutively enrolled 88 non-diabetic ESRD patients (HD: n = 45, PD: n = 43) receiving dialysis for ≥3 months at Bursa City Hospital between 1 May and 16 September 2025. All underwent neurological examination and nerve conduction studies. Frailty was assessed using the Fried Frailty Phenotype (FFP), classifying patients as robust (0), pre-f

Imaging in Advanced Epithelial Ovarian Cancer: Assessment of Peritoneal Spread.

Ovarian cancer affects over 250 000 women worldwide, with epithelial ovarian cancer accounting for approximately 90% of cases. Lack of effective screening and absence of early symptoms result in nearly 70% of patients presenting with late-stage disease. A distinct feature of advanced ovarian cancer is that peritoneal spread does not preclude curative surgical resection. Ovarian cancer is staged using the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics, or FIGO, system, last updated in 2014. US is the first-line imaging modality for evaluating the symptomatic female pelvis, while MRI is t

PIPAC for Malignant Peritoneal Mesothelioma: Current Insights and Future Directions.

BACKGROUND: Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare and aggressive tumour with poor prognosis, often diagnosed late due to nonspecific symptoms. Current standard treatment involves systemic chemotherapy and cytoreductive surgery combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, but this approach is limited to selected patients. SUMMARY: Pressurized intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy (PIPAC) has emerged as a novel technique improving drug delivery and penetration in the peritoneal cavity. This narrative review evaluates the role of PIPAC in the treatment of MPM, analysing da

An exploratory assessment of icodextrin for ultrafiltration failure subtypes in peritoneal dialysis.

Although icodextrin was initially developed for rapid transporters (type 1 UFF), emerging evidence suggests its effects might be independent of peritoneal membrane transport characteristics. This study aimed to evaluate the suitability of 7.5% icodextrin for all PD patients with UFF. We enrolled 19 patients with UFF and 24 non-UFF PD controls. All participants underwent standard, modified, Mini-, and Double-Mini peritoneal equilibrium tests (PET). Key parameters assessed included sodium sieving (∆DNa60, ∆D/PNa60), osmotic conductance to glucose, small-pore ultrafiltration (UFSP), free water tr

The performance of intraoperative peritoneal washings in detecting pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Accurate peritoneal staging is critical in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), as the presence of peritoneal metastases significantly alters prognosis and treatment strategy. In this setting, some centers use peritoneal washings (PWs), which allow the sampling of a large area of the peritoneal surface in the absence of a visible lesion, to improve peritoneal staging and improve selection for curative-intent surgery. METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective review of 28 patients who underwent cytopathologic evaluation of intraoperative PWs collected between July 2019 to

The impact of serum myokine profile on the outcome of peritoneal dialysis patients.

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients are at high risk for complications such as muscle loss and peritonitis. Individual myokines and functional assessment of PD patients are inconsistently reported to associate with poor prognosis, but their complex interactions for risk stratification have not been studied. METHODS: In 194 new PD patients, we measured the serum levels of a myokine panel, metabolic and inflammatory markers, together with physical function scores. We employed k-cluster analysis on the result and analyzed patient survival, technique survival, peritonitis-free survival,…

Experiences of Children Undergoing Peritoneal Dialysis: A Descriptive Phenomenological Study.

BACKGROUND: Kidney transplantation is the preferred kidney replacement therapy for children with kidney failure; when not feasible, peritoneal dialysis is the preferred dialysis modality. Despite its clinical advantages, children undergoing peritoneal dialysis face significant emotional, physical and psychosocial challenges that remain poorly documented in the literature, particularly from the child's own perspective. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of children undergoing peritoneal dialysis, with a view to informing family-centred nursing care and improving psyc

Imaging Diagnosis-Peritoneal Splenosis in a Dog: Computed Tomographic Findings.

This report describes a case of peritoneal splenosis in a dog, identified following the discovery of multiple peritoneal nodules on computed tomography (CT) performed for the evaluation of a compressive myelopathy. Histopathologic analysis confirmed the presence of ectopic splenic tissue without evidence of malignancy. In dogs, splenosis results from autotransplantation of splenic tissue within the peritoneal cavity, following splenic injury or surgery. Although most cases are incidental findings, nodule enlargement or rupture may occasionally lead to clinical consequences. This case emphasize

Primary Peritoneal Perivesical Hemangiosarcoma in 16 Dogs (2020-2024).

BACKGROUND: Canine hemangiosarcoma (HSA) commonly arises in the spleen, heart, and skin, whereas primary peritoneal presentations are rare and poorly characterized. A perivesical peritoneal location without involvement of adjacent organs has not been previously well described. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to characterize the clinical presentation, diagnostic features, treatment, and outcomes of dogs with primary peritoneal perivesical HSA. ANIMALS: This study included 16 client-owned dogs diagnosed with peritoneal perivesical HSA at 2 referral centres between 2020 and 2024. METHODS: Methods c

Peritoneal dialysis in Crohn's disease: A gray area worth revisiting.

Crohn's disease (CD) has traditionally been considered a relative or absolute contraindication to peritoneal dialysis (PD) because of concerns regarding chronic inflammation, peritoneal membrane injury, adhesions, and increased risk of peritonitis. However, clinical evidence supporting these concerns remains sparse. We report two patients with CD who initiated PD with differing outcomes. A 46-year-old man with longstanding stricturing ileocolonic CD developed end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) from monoclonal gammopathy of renal significance and acute interstitial nephritis. His CD was in clinica…
