Preadolescent children of substance-dependent fathers with antisocial personality disorder: psychiatric disorders and problem behaviors.

We compared psychiatric disorders and problem behavior scores in pre-adolescent children of fathers with alcohol or other drug dependence and ASP (SD+/ASP+), children whose fathers had substance dependence without ASP (SD+/ASP-), and children whose fathers were without either disorder (SD-/ASP-). SD+/ASP+ children showed elevated rates of major depression, conduct disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, and separation anxiety disorder when compared to SD+/ASP- and SD-/ASP- children. SD+/ASP+ children had higher internalizing and externalizing problem

Cluster of MMPI personality profiles in chronic tension-type headache and predictable response to Fluoxetine.

A study was made of the personality profiles of a sample of 51 patients with chronic tension-type headache (CTH) employing the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI). Two clusters were obtained by applying multivariate classification techniques: cluster 1 (with elevations on scales Hy, D and Hs only) and cluster 2 (exhibiting elevations on most scales except Pd, Mf and Si). Fifty subjects without chronic pain or known psychiatric disorders, and extracted from the same social setting as the patients, completed the MMPI as a control group. Fluoxetine treatment was started in the CTH …

Typus melancholicus and the Temperament and Character Inventory personality dimensions in patients with major depression.

Although many clinical studies have been conducted to determine the etiological role and clinical implications of typus melancholicus for unipolar depression, maladaptive personality features in depressive patients have not been well described. This study explores typus melancholicus, as measured by the rigidity subscale of the Munich Personality Test, and maladaptive personality features, as measured by the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI), in 131 remitted patients with DSM-IV major depression and 154 normal controls. The patients reported significantly higher scores on rigidity and …

A family study of outpatients with borderline personality disorder and no history of mood disorder.

While several studies have examined psychiatric disorders in the relatives of individuals with borderline personality disorder, many of these studies have not employed a family study methodology and suffer from other methodological shortcomings. Thus, the conclusions from family data addressing the validity of borderline personality disorder, its relation to other conditions, and its distinction from mood disorders, continue to be debated. The present investigation employed a family study design with direct interviews with relatives, structured diagnostic interviews with both probands and rela…

Childhood abuse and platelet tritiated-paroxetine binding in bulimia nervosa: implications of borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Co-occurrence of bulimia nervosa and borderline personality disorder has been attributed to shared factors, including childhood abuse and disturbances in central serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) mechanisms. To explore this notion, we conducted a controlled assessment of childhood abuse and 5-HT function in bulimics with and without borderline personality disorder. METHOD: Forty patients with bulimia nervosa, confirmed with the Eating Disorders Examination interview (14 with borderline personality disorder and 26 without), and 25 normal-eater controls were assessed for clinica…

Conduct disorder, antisocial personality disorder and substance use disorders in schizophrenia and major affective disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationships between childhood conduct disorder (CD), antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) and substance use disorders (substance abuse or substance dependence) in psychiatric patients with severe mental illness. METHOD: Substance use-related problems on screening instruments, lifetime and recent prevalence of substance use disorders, and family history of substance use disorder were evaluated in four groups of 293 patients with mainly schizophrenia-spectrum and major affective disorders: No ASPD/CD, CD Only, Adult ASPD Only, Full ASPD. RESULTS: Full ASPD was str…

Relation between premorbid personality and patterns of emotion expression in mid- to late-stage dementia.

Twenty-seven nursing home patients with mid- to late-stage dementia participated in a study of the relation between preillness personality, as indexed by attachment and emotion regulation style, and current emotional behavior. Preillness measures were completed by family members and current assessments of emotion were supplied by nursing home aides and family members; in addition, emotion was coded during a family visit using an objective coding system for facial emotion expressions. Attachment style was found to be related to the expression of positive affect, with securely attached individua…

Low body weight in male children and adolescents with schizoid personality disorder or Asperger's disorder.

This study explored the hypothesis that body weight is reduced in male children and adolescents with schizoid personality disorder or Asperger's disorder. The body weights of 33 consecutively admitted male subjects with one of these disorders were retrospectively assessed with percentiles for the body mass index (BMI). The mean percentile (+/- SD) for the BMI was 31.6 +/- 27.6 and differed significantly from the expected value of 50 (P<0.001). Ten subjects had a BMI of < or = 10th age percentile. Post hoc comparisons revealed that BMI percentiles were (a) reduced to a similar extent in patient…

Understanding the comorbidity between early-onset dysthymia and cluster B personality disorders: a family study.

OBJECTIVE: A number of studies have documented significant comorbidity between dysthymia and axis II personality disorders, particularly those grouped in cluster B. However, the nature of this comorbidity is poorly understood. The purpose of this investigation was to use the family study method to test five competing models of the comorbidity between early-onset dysthymia and cluster B personality disorders. METHOD: Proband groups consisted of subjects with early-onset dysthymia and a co-occurring cluster B personality disorder (N = 28), subjects with early-onset dysthymia without a cluster B…

Investigation into the relationship between personality traits and OCD: a replication employing a clinical population.

The relationship between obsessional personality traits and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) has long been the subject of debate. Although clinicians have asserted for nearly a hundred years that such a relationship exists, empirical investigations have failed to provide consistent support; however, none of these empirical investigations have undertaken analyses that control for the effect of mood variables. Employing a non-clinical sample, Rosen and Tallis (1995) [Behaviour, Research and Therapy, 4, 445-450] found that when mood variables are taken into account, a unique relationship betwe…

Relationship of NEO-PI to personality styles and severity of trauma in chronic PTSD victims.

The relationship of the NEO-PI to personality disorders was evaluated in a clinical population. Eighty subjects with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were given this measure, along with the MCMI-II and PTSD and combat scales. Two questions were addressed: (1) What is the relationship of NEO-PI domains and facets to personality disorders?; and (2) What is this scale's relationship to PTSD problems? Results support previous studies that employed a clinical population, but with lower correlation coefficients. For the most part, then, the NEO-PI domains and facets correlated in expected ways …

Psychological risk factors for dissociation and self-mutilation in female patients with borderline personality disorder.

The purposes of this study were to determine whether or not dissociation in female patients suffering from personality disorder is related to sexual and physical abuse or to abuse parameters and whether or not self-mutilation in the personality disorders is related to psychological risk factors or to dissociation. The sample was divided into 78 borderline and 72 nonborderline personality disorders. Psychological risk factors were measured through histories of childhood sexual abuse, physical abuse and separation or loss as well as scores on the Parental Bonding Index. Dissociation was measured…

Personality disorder in patients infected with HIV: a controlled study with implications for clinical care.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies of psychiatric illness in populations infected with or at risk for HIV have not included systematic evaluation for personality disorders. The authors present the first controlled study of 1) personality disorders in HIV-positive and HIV-negative homosexual men and 2) the impact of personality disorder on coping, social support, and mood in asymptomatic HIV-positive homosexual men. METHOD: The authors studied 58 asymptomatic HIV-positive and 53 HIV-negative homosexual men living outside the high-prevalence epicenters of the AIDS epidemic. Personality disorder was as…

Has multiple personality disorder remained consistent over time? A comparison of past and recent cases.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether recent descriptions of multiple personality disorder are consistent with descriptions from the past. Clinical presentations and childhood histories obtained from early case reports of multiple personality disorder published between 1800 and 1965 (N = 52) were compared with recent case reports published in the 1980s (N = 54). Recent and past cases did not differ in age at diagnosis, length of treatment, duration of follow-up, presence of child and opposite gender personalities, and exposure to hypnosis. Recent cases differed significantly from …

[Effect of personality disorders on response to cognitive behavioral therapy of panic disorder with agoraphobia].

This study measures the effect of personality disorders on the efficacy of treatment of agoraphobia. Forty-one patients suffering from panic disorder with agoraphobia are evaluated for the presence of a personality disorder (according to DSM-III-R criteria) before the onset of treatment. The treatment consists in 14 sessions of behavioural cognitive therapy. Various measures of agoraphobic avoidance are obtained before (pre-test) and after the end of treatment (post-test, three month follow-up). Effect of treatment reaches statistical and clinical significance for all patients. Grouping of pat…

Life events, personality, and physical risk factors in recent-onset duodenal ulcer. A preliminary study.

To clarify the interactions between stressful life events and other risk factors in the development of duodenal ulcer disease, we studied 33 patients with active ulcer, symptomatic for less than or equal to 6 months and untreated during the previous year, using the Paykel Interview for stressful life events, the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), and Zung's Anxiety and Depression scales. MMPIs were abnormal in 64% of the patients, and 61% showed some degree of depression. The 16 patients whose symptoms had been preceded by severe stress and more pathological MMPIs, especially …

The outcome of childhood conduct disorder: implications for defining adult personality disorder and conduct disorder.

The effect of conduct disorder on adult social functioning in the areas of work, sexual/love relationships, social relationships and criminality was studied in a sample of young adults who spent much of their childhoods in group-cottage children's homes and an inner-city comparison group. Most subjects with conduct disorder had pervasive (but not necessarily severe) social difficulties compared to peers without conduct disorder. Less than half of this group met DSM-III adult criteria for antisocial personality disorder and just over half were given a diagnosis of personality disorder on interv…

Personality traits and behaviors of alcohol-impaired drivers: a comparison of first and multiple offenders.

Using an interview and questionnaire format, 358 driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) first offenders and 141 DUI multiple offenders were compared on measures of personality traits, drinking behavior and problems, and driving behavior and history. In addition, official driving records for the two groups were compared. Results indicated that multiple offenders were significantly higher in hostility, sensation seeking, psychopathic deviance, mania, and depression than first offenders. Multiple offenders were significantly lower in emotional adjustment and assertiveness. Multiple offender…

[Functional stomach and intestinal complaints in young adults: incidence, follow-up, personality and psychosocial factors].

The prevalence rates and the course of functional gastrointestinal disorders in addition to psychopathology and psychosocial factors which are assumed to be associated with functional disorders were longitudinally investigated in an epidemiological cohort study of young adults aged 21-30 from the Canton of Zurich (Switzerland), by means of four interviews. Case definition was based on operational criteria concerning frequency and duration of symptoms reported by the subjects. One-year prevalence rates of (functional) stomach complaints and intestinal complaints were found to vary between 8.7 a

A comparison of four measures to diagnose DSM-III-R borderline personality disorder in outpatients.

After three decades of clinical controversy and research, a clinical consensus has formed that borderline personality disorder (BPD) exists as a unique entity which can be defined by DSM-III-R diagnostic criteria. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relative abilities of four different approaches to the identification of borderlines and to differentiate a DSM-III-R BPD group from a control group of other diagnoses. The approaches were the Kernberg's Structural Interview, the Diagnostic Interview for Borderline Personality Disorders (DIB), the Borderline Syndrome Index (BSI), and the …
