Obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) is characterized by recurrent episodes of partial or complete upper airway collapse during sleep that is highlighted by a reduction in, or complete cessation of, airflow despite documented on going inspiratory efforts. Due to the lack of adequate alveolar ventilation that results from the upper airway narrowing, oxygen saturation may drop and partial pressure of CO2 may occasionally increase. The events are mostly terminated by arousals. Clinical consequences are excessive daytime sleepiness related to the sleep disruption. Minimal diagnostic c

Huntington's disease (HD) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease characterized by motor, cognitive, and psychiatric disturbance. In this article, we used polysomnography, actigraphy and a variety of validated questionnaires to ascertain the extent to which sleep changes are identifiable and measurable in mild stage HD, and importantly, to see whether patients are negatively impacted by the changes in their sleep. We found significant differences in sleep architecture and sleep efficiency in patients compared with controls using polysomnography. However, patient scores on the Functional Outcomes

Rate of recovery of daytime performance and sleepiness following moderate and severe sleep deprivation (SD) was examined when recovery opportunity was either augmented or restricted. Thirty healthy non-smokers, aged 18-33 years, participated in one of three conditions: moderate SD with augmented (9-h) recovery opportunities, moderate SD with restricted (6-h) recovery opportunities, or severe SD with augmented recovery opportunities. Each participant attended the laboratory for 8-9 consecutive nights: an adaptation and baseline night (23:00-08:00 hours), one or two night(s) of wakefulness, and

INTRODUCTION: The behavior disorder occurring during REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep is a parasomnia characterized by absence of atonia typical of this phase of sleep, although the other characteristics are maintained, namely rapid eye movements and desynchronization of cortical electrical activity. Clinically it is accompanied by abrupt, often violent movements, which may involve a limb or the trunk in relation to dreams typical of this phase of sleep, and which may interrupt sleep. Many pathological processes have been described, including: the Shy-Dragger syndrome, Parkinson's disease, olivo

Many studies have examined the impact of varying levels of sleep loss or sleep disturbance upon the multiple sleep latency test (MSLT). Virtually no studies have examined the impact of level of physiologic arousal upon measured sleep tendency. In the current study, 12 normal-sleeping young adults took modified multiple sleep latency tests after either watching television for 15 minutes or after a 5-minute walk. This entire protocol was repeated on another week after subjects had been partially sleep deprived by reducing their time in bed by 50%. It was hypothesized that sleep latencies would b

OBJECTIVE: To assess recently alcohol-abstinent chronic alcoholic patients for selected parameters indicative of sleep quality.
METHOD: Patients (n = 24, 14 male), abstinent 3-6 weeks, and healthy controls (n = 20) were admitted to a clinical sleep unit. Measurements included sleep respiratory events and periodic limb movements, using strict methodology.
RESULTS: Clear signs of sleep deterioration and a high prevalence of apneic/hypopneic episodes were observed. Apneas were found at the same frequency for men and women; this has not been described before. No periodic limb movement was found.

A three year old with sleep apnea due to adenotonsillar hypertrophy is presented. The picture improved after treatment with antibiotics and corticosteroids, and disappeared after adenotonsillectomy. The symptomatology is studied in relation to primary alveolar hypoventilation and the "sudden death" syndrome in infants. The need of an early diagnosis is emphasized to avoid onset of an irreversible "cor pulmonale". It is suggested that aside from a probable predisposing "central" and constitutional factor in children with this syndrome, apparently there are heterogeneous electroencephalographic

BACKGROUND: Physical, psychological, and cognitive multimorbidity (PPC-MM), defined as the coexistence of conditions in at least two domains of physical conditions, depressive symptoms, and cognitive impairment, poses a major challenge to healthy aging. However, its potential risk factors remain unclear. As a key component of health, sleep habits are closely associated with various chronic conditions. This study aimed to investigate the longitudinal associations between sleep habits (night-time sleep duration, nap duration, and sleep quality) and the occurrence and progression of PPC-MM.

BACKGROUND: Sleep and circadian rhythms are affected by aging. Although the relationship between sleep disorders and cellular aging has been demonstrated in some studies, it still remains unclear. Telomere length has been considered one of the sensitive biomarkers for aging in recent years. Studies investigating the relationship between sleep disorders and telomere length are limited and their results are inconsistent. This study aims to demonstrate telomere length in sleep disorders.
METHODS: The study sample consisted of 116 participants, 94 patients and 22 healthy participants. Patients gr

Narcolepsy is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder defined by the selective loss of orexin-producing neurons in the lateral hypothalamus, leading to excessive daytime sleepiness and cataplexy. While pharmacological therapies have evolved to mitigate symptoms, they fail to address the core pathology-orexin deficiency. This narrative review examines the potential of orexin cell transplantation as an innovative therapeutic approach to restore orexin signalling and treat the root cause of narcolepsy. We begin by examining the clinical features, pathophysiology, and diagnostic criteria of narcoleps

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a leading neurodegenerative disease with deteriorating cognition as its main clinical sign. In addition to the clinical history, it is characterized by the presence of two neuropathological hallmark lesions; amyloid-beta (Aβ) and neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs), identified in the brain at post-mortem in specific anatomical areas. Recently, it was discovered that NFTs occur initially in the subcortical nuclei, such as the locus coeruleus in the pons, and are said to spread from there to the cerebral cortices and the hippocampus. This contrasts with the prior acceptanc
