Characteristics of the transgender community in Lebanon and barriers to proper healthcare.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with gender dysphoria represent a growing portion of the global population. Yet data about this community is lacking in Lebanon. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to characterize the health status of the transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) Lebanese adults by addressing challenges and disparities in access to basic needs. METHODS: An anonymous online survey was conducted between January and May 2021 across the Non Governmental Organization (NGO) supporting TGD individuals in Lebanon. The study consisted of self-reported health assessments collecting data on medical and men

Gestational Diabetes in Somali Women: Neglected Risks for Maternal and Neonatal Health.

This commentary examines gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) as an under-recognised contributor to adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes among Somali women and in comparable fragile settings. GDM is associated with pre-eclampsia, macrosomia, obstructed labour, stillbirth, neonatal morbidity, and later type 2 diabetes in women and offspring. Globally, hyperglycaemia in pregnancy affects approximately one in six live births, yet detection and management remain least accessible in low-resource and conflict-affected settings. Somalia has high maternal and neonatal mortality, but local GDM prevale

Burden and determinants of perinatal depression: population-based estimates from linked healthcare utilization data and EPDS screening.

PURPOSE: Perinatal depression is a frequent disorder affecting about 10-15% of women. Despite its significance, only a proportion of the female population is screened or intercepted by professional services. The aim of this study was to estimate its occurrence and to examine potential risk and protective factors. METHODS: Events attributable to perinatal depression were identified through an algorithm applied to Health Care Utilization (HCU) data in a cohort of 164,767 resident mothers giving birth between 2017 and 2023 in Agenzia di Tutela della Salute (ATS) della Città Metropolitana di Mila

Factors Associated With Opioid Agonist Treatment Engagement and Harm Reduction Service Use: Findings From the New South Wales Opioid Dependence Survey.

INTRODUCTION: Opioid agonist treatment (OAT) is one of the most effective treatments for opioid dependence, but there can be barriers to accessing treatment. This study examined characteristics associated with OAT engagement-never, previous or current-among people with opioid dependence in NSW, Australia, following recent reforms to OAT access. METHODS: Between October 2023 and March 2024, people with opioid dependence were recruited from services and community settings across NSW. Participants completed structured interviews on socio-demographics, mental health disorders, substance use and u

Differential Eating Disorder Symptom Trajectories Across the Perinatal Period and Associated Psychosocial Factors.

BACKGROUND: The perinatal period is a critical risk period for changes in eating disorder (ED) symptoms. However, extant research is mixed regarding the direction of these changes, with some studies identifying relief from ED symptoms and others finding evidence of worsening symptoms during this time. To account for heterogeneity in ED symptom change among pregnant and postpartum individuals, the current study aimed to explore ED symptom trajectories and their psychosocial correlates during pregnancy and the first postpartum year using person-centered statistical approaches. METHOD: A communi

Behavioral and biological alterations following transplantation of ASD-associated gut microbiota in mice.

BACKGROUND: Alterations in the gut microbiota have been increasingly reported in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, the extent to which ASD-associated microbial communities are linked to behavioral and host biological changes remains to be clarified. METHODS: Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) was performed using samples from children with ASD or typically developing (TD) controls into antibiotic-pretreated mice. Behavioral performance was evaluated using open field, social interaction, and spatial learning paradigms. Gut microbial composition was assessed by 16S rR

Mixed-method longitudinal investigation of sexual and gender-based violence following COVID-19 in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, concerns were raised about unintended effects of measures taken to prevent its spread, on sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). The United Nations called for understanding how national lockdowns put young people at risk of SGBV. This research is particularly needed in contexts such as South Africa, where pre-existing levels of SGBV are high and limited data has been released. METHODS: This mixed-method longitudinal study characterised trajectories of household-level and partner-level SGBV exposure over 6 months, approximately 1 year after the i

Language-based AI modeling of personality traits and pathology from life narrative interviews.

Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) hold promise for clarifying personality disorder (PD) models, research methodology, understanding, and clinical treatment. This study models personality and personality pathology using natural language. A representative community sample of N = 1,409 older adults from St. Louis (33% Black, 65% White, and 2% other) completed life narrative interviews lasting on average 20 min. Language from the interviews was then used to train and test language-based personality models on scores from the NEO-Personality Inventory-Revised and the Structured Interview for

Physical Activity in People with Hemophilia.

Hemophilia is a rare inherited bleeding disorder associated with recurrent musculoskeletal bleeding, chronic pain, and functional decline. Advances in prophylactic therapies, including extended half-life factors, non-factor therapies like emicizumab, and gene therapies, have fundamentally transformed care, enabling a paradigmatic shift from activity restriction to promotion. This review synthesizes recent evidence to examine the multifaceted role of physical activity (PA) in people with hemophilia (PwH), current challenges, and strategies to optimize health outcomes. PA confers substantial ben

Examining the impact of naming equity within perinatal substance use and mental health policy: a scoping review.

The ways in which we understand and respond to perinatal substance use are explicitly and implicitly driven by policy. Perinatal substance use is a visible manifestation of intersecting systems of oppression, shaped by racist, colonial and sexist discourses surrounding mothering and drug use. Policies related to perinatal substance use and mental health have far-reaching impacts on families, communities and generations. This scoping review examined the conceptualization and operationalization of equity within foundational perinatal policies in one Canadian province, British Columbia (BC), betw

Impact of structurally transphobic policy environment on harmful alcohol and substance use among transgender and nonbinary adults.

Previous studies have demonstrated high prevalence of alcohol and substance use behaviors among transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) communities. Considering the recency of anti-trans policies in the US, it is critical to understand whether structural anti-trans factors are associated with substance use outcomes. To fill this gap, we examined the associations between factors that make up a structurally anti-trans policy environment and unhealthy alcohol use and drug use among TGD adults. Using data from the Priority Assessment in Trans Health (PATH) Project (n = 797), multivariable regression

"Fusion of Horizons": Part III. Rethinking radon Risk: Scientific advances and regulatory implications (since 1990s).

This study examines the global evolution of scientific understanding regarding radon exposure and its health implications, focusing on the transition from early occupational exposure limits and epidemiological risk assessments to molecular-level attributions of radon-induced diseases. Since the early 1990s, advancements in genetic and molecular research have provided growing evidence suggesting that radon exposure may leave a distinct oncological signature, potentially allowing for more precise differentiation between radon-induced lung cancers and those caused by other factors. While this fie

Hemodialysis Patients' Emotional Profiles and Associated Symptomatology: A Cross-Sectional Multicenter Study.

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has a significant impact on patients' physical, psychological, and social well-being. Emotional disorders are common and contribute to a higher prevalence of symptoms compared to that in the general population. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between the emotional profiles and symptomatology in patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD). Methods: A multicenter, cross-sectional, observational/analytical study was developed in seven centers of the Spanish Renal Foundation in the Community of Madrid (Spain). The study protocol was reviewed and appr

Family-centred interventions for people with substance use disorders in low-income and middle-income country settings: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Substance use disorder (SUD) and problematic substance use are global public health concerns with significant multifaceted implications for physical health and psychosocial well-being. The impact of SUD extends beyond the individual to their family while imposing financial and social burdens on the community. Though family-centred interventions have shown promise in addressing SUD, their implementation and impact in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) remain underexplored. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Per Joanna Briggs Institute's scoping review protocol, a systematic search

What do the Public Understand About Intimate Partner Violence in the Context of Military Veteran Status and PTSD?

Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) represents a significant public and social health concern and may present particular complexities in military veteran relationships which are subject to unique stressors including separations, transition to civilian life and increased risk of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Public understanding is vital in terms of ensuring access to services and appropriate intervention. However, little is known about the public perception of IPV in this context. This study sought to assess how public recognition and discourse is affected by military veteran status and a

Naloxone Knowledge and Attitudes Towards Overdose Response Among Family Members of People who Misuse Opioids.

Providing family members of individuals with opioid use disorders (OUD) naloxone is a cost-effective way to prevent overdose deaths. However, misconceptions and negative attitudes towards naloxone hinder family engagement with naloxone programs. This study examines factors associated with knowledge and attitudes toward naloxone among adults with close family members who misused opioids. Adults with family members (parent, step-parent, child, spouse, sibling, or step-sibling) who misused opioids (N = 299) completed a web-based survey. Participants were recruited through treatment providers, com
