Bilateral Internal Auditory Canal Metastasis of Colon Carcinoma Mimicking Neurofibromatosis Type II: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: The vast majority of cerebellopontine angle tumors are benign with a favorable prognosis. Metastatic tumors occurring in the cerebellopontine angle are extremely rare. Herein, we report a case of colon carcinoma metastasis to the bilateral internal auditory canals. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 59-year-old man presented with a 2-week history of binaural hearing loss. One year before admission, he was diagnosed with colon carcinoma and underwent surgical resection combined with chemotherapy. Physical examination showed complete hearing loss in bilateral ears and bilateral facial palsy. Magne

Primary Extraosseous Ewing Sarcoma of the Maxillary Sinus in an Adult-A Rare Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Ewing sarcoma (ES), which is described as diffuse endothelioma of the bone, is divided into osseous and extraosseous Ewing sarcoma (EES) mostly affecting children and adolescents. It is a rare, aggressive, and poorly differentiated small blue round cell tumor that seldom affects the head and neck regions. CASE REPORT: Herein, we reported a 46-year-old man presenting with right nasal block, epistaxis, and epiphora from the right eye for one month. The nasal endoscopy revealed a friable mass arising from the anterior half of the right nasal cavity. Histological findings were sugge

Use of 3D Models in the Surgical Decision-Making Process in a Case of Double-Outlet Right Ventricle With Multiple Ventricular Septal Defects.

3D printing has recently become an affordable means of producing bespoke models and parts. This has now been extended to models produced from medical imaging, such as computed tomography (CT). Here we report the production of a selection of 3D models to compliment the available imaging data for a 12-month-old child with double-outlet right ventricle and two ventricular septal defects. The models were produced to assist with case management and surgical planning. We used both stereolithography and polyjet techniques to produce white rigid and flexible color models, respectively. The models were

Development of a novel murine delayed secondary fracture healing in vivo model using periosteal cauterization.

INTRODUCTION: Delayed union and nonunion development remain a major clinical problematic complication during fracture healing, with partially unclear pathophysiology. Incidences range from 5 to 40% in high-risk patients, such as patients with periosteal damage. The periosteum is essential in adequate fracture healing, especially during soft callus formation. In this study, we hypothesize that inducing periosteal damage in a murine bone healing model will result in a novel delayed union model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A mid-shaft femoral non-critically sized osteotomy was created in skeletally m

Highly Satisfied Total Knee Arthroplasty Patients Display a Wide Range of Soft Tissue Balance.

Soft tissue balancing while crucial for a successful total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is incompletely defined and the subject of broad recommendations. We analyzed 69 unilateral computer-assisted surgery posterior stabilized (PS) TKA subjects who postoperatively scored ≥36 out of a possible 40 points on the satisfaction section of the American Knee Society score (2011). We examined a range of postoperative coronal plane laxity parameters and the correlation between preoperative and postoperative laxity. Total postoperative coronal laxity arcs at maximum extension and 20 degrees of flexion varied

Influence of energy absorbers on Malgaigne fracture mechanism in lumbar-pelvic system under vertical impact load.

Malgaigne fractures are the most common and widespread pelvic injuries resulting from the shear forces the action mechanism of which has not been explained in the literature yet. Military accidents with improvised explosive devices (IED) perfectly reflect this type of pelvic fracture. The finite element (FE) model of lumbar-pelvic complex (LPC) was developed based on computed tomography (CT) scans with the seat including steel frame, padding and soft tissue. The correlation coefficients of both low (100 N) and high (500 N) loads were greater than that currently obtained in the literature due t

Primary extra-nodal non-Hodgkin lymphoma in buttock soft tissue: A rare case report.

RATIONALE: Primary extra-nodal non-Hodgkin lymphoma (PE-NHL) arising in the region of the buttocks is rare. After reviewing the literature from the last 20 years, we found only 3 reported lymphomas originating from soft tissue of the buttocks. In our case, positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) was performed for the first time, both before and after treatment, to determine the initial stage of PE-NHL and the curative effects of treatment. PATIENT CONCERNS: We report the case of a 71-year-old woman who was admitted to our hospital due to pain, skin redness, rising skin tempe

Lipomatosis of the parotid salivary gland: 2 case reports and review of the literature on fat-containing salivary gland lesions.

Two cases of lipomatosis of the parotid salivary gland in two dogs are reported. Both dogs were presented with a slow growing unilateral non-painful mass in the parotid region. The mass measured 12 and 15 cm on the longest axis for case 1 and 2 respectively. Initial incisional biopsies were suggestive of infiltrative lipoma or salivary gland adenocarcinoma. Case 2 underwent head radiographs that showed a soft tissue opacity on the area of the right parotid gland followed by a computed tomography that showed a multi-lobulated infiltrative mass occupying the right parotid gland. Both cases under

ABCC6 Deficiency Promotes Development of Randall Plaque.

BACKGROUND: Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is a genetic disease caused by mutations in the ABCC6 gene that result in low pyrophosphate levels and subsequent progressive soft tissue calcifications. PXE mainly affects the skin, retina, and arteries. However, many patients with PXE experience kidney stones. We determined the prevalence of this pathology in patients with PXE and examined the possible underlying mechanisms in murine models. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study in a large cohort of patients with PXE and analyzed urine samples and kidneys from Abcc6-/- mice at various ages. W

Anterior convex lateral orbital wall: distinctive morphology in Apert syndrome.

Bony malformations of the orbit and alterations to the soft tissue in Apert syndrome contribute to ophthalmic dysfunction. Recognised structural malformation of the sphenoid and ethmoid sinuses, together with corresponding deformities in the anterior and middle cranial base, are characteristic. Our aim was to explore the underlying structural components of disfigurement and the consequent development of the orbit in patients with Apert syndrome over time by studying 18 preoperative computed tomographic (CT) scans of affected patients and 36 scans from controls. Cephalometric measurements relat

Primary Papillary Serous Carcinoma of the Fallopian Tube Presenting as a Vaginal Mass: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND There is now evidence to support that some cases of high-grade serous papillary carcinoma arise from the fallopian tubes rather than the ovaries. Common symptoms at presentation include abdominal pain and swelling, vomiting, altered bowel habit and urinary symptoms. To our knowledge, this is the first case of serous papillary carcinoma presenting as a vaginal mass lesion. CASE REPORT A 41-year-old woman was referred to the Bnai-Zion Medical Center with the main complaint of irregular vaginal bleeding, vaginal mucous discharge, and suspected pelvic mass. Physical examination showed a

Double non-contiguous fractures in a patient with spondylo-epiphyseal dysplasia with spinal ankylosis treated with open and percutaneous spinal fixation technique: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Patients with ankylosing spines are susceptible to developing spinal fractures even with minor trauma and can develop early or late neurological injuries. These fractures require early and aggressive surgical management to enable spinal stability and/or neural decompression. Being highly unstable by nature, they require relatively long segment instrumentation and fusion, which can increase paravertebral soft tissue damage and perioperative bleeding. The purpose of this report is to describe a rare case of traumatic double fractures at the cervico-thoracic and thoraco-lumbar transit
