The Trauma Recovery and Empowerment Model (TREM): conceptual and practical issues in a group intervention for women.

This article describes the Trauma Recovery and Empowerment Model (TREM), a manualized group intervention designed for women trauma survivors with severe mental disorders, and discusses key issues in its conceptualization and implementation. TREM recognizes the complexity of long-term adaptation to trauma and addresses a range of difficulties common among survivors of sexual and physical abuse. Focusing primarily on the development of specific recovery skills and current functioning, TREM utilizes techniques shown to be effective in trauma recovery services. The group's content and structure ar

Is the reexperience of painful emotion therapeutic?

Recently, a great deal of attention has been focused on the health promoting benefits that can accrue from revisiting painful emotion. The rationales for revisiting painful emotions include those that assume reexperiencing emotion per se can be health-promoting. Another view stipulates that revisiting painful emotion will only yield benefit if there is some recasting/restructuring of the emotional memory. Research pertinent to the various rationales is discussed. Then research on the impact of emotional expression and outcomes studies of therapies designed to enhance emotional experience are r

Snoring and nightmares.

To test the conclusion of a recent study that snoring and disturbing dreams are strongly associated, 199 university undergraduates responded to a questionnaire that assessed their level of snoring and the frequency with which they experienced fantastic nightmares. Contrary to data provided by this recent study, we did not find a significant relationship between snoring and disturbing dreams. Some possible reasons for the discrepancy between these data sets were considered.

Psychiatric sequelae after traumatic injury: the Pittsburgh Regatta accident.

Accidental injury in a child is sudden, often violent, and emotionally stressful, particularly when it is accompanied by hospitalization and rehabilitation. The following case report examines the presence of post-traumatic stress disorder and other psychiatric illnesses in five children involved in a boating accident during the 1988 Pittsburgh Regatta and considered severity of injury as well as complicating psychosocial stressors in the development of the disorders. The presence of symptoms was not related to the nature or extent of the injury but was instead the by-product of additional fact

Augmented Reality 3MDR Therapy for the Treatment of PTSD and Comorbid Moral Injury: A Case Study.

Rates of veteran suicide, post-traumatic stress, and moral injury remain alarmingly high and continue to rise. While virtual reality and augmented reality technologies have shown promise in improving post- traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) severity, research on these innovative methods is still limited. Multi- modal memory desensitization and reconsolidation (3MDR), a cutting-edge therapy that combines Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy or Augmented Reality Exposure Therapy with a "walk and talk" therapy, has demonstrated significant potential in enhancing participant engagement and substantially

Increased cardiovascular events in young patients with mental disorders: a nationwide cohort study.

AIMS: It remains unclear whether young patients with mental disorders have a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases than does the general population. Using a nationwide database, we investigated the prognostic association between the risks of myocardial infarction (MI), ischaemic stroke (IS), and mental disorders in young patients. METHODS AND RESULTS: Young patients aged between 20 and 39 years old who underwent nationwide health examinations between 2009 and 2012 were screened. A total of 6 557 727 individuals were identified and subsequently classified according to mental disorders includi

Traumatic Brain Injury and Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors among Post-9/11 Veterans: Investigating Longitudinal Change and Interactions with Mental Health.

Veterans die by suicide at almost twice the rate of non-veterans, and risks for suicide can be further increased after sustaining traumatic brain injury (TBI). This is notable, given that over 20 % of post-9/11 Veterans are estimated to have experienced TBI. Better understanding risk for suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) would allow for improved screening processes and targeted treatment approaches. In this study, we use data from 823 veterans who served after September 11, 2001 and participated in the VISN 6 MIRECC's Post-Deployment Mental Health Study. In total, 511 (62.1 %) veterans re

A methodology for assessing deployment trauma and its consequences in OEF/OIF/OND veterans: The TRACTS longitudinal prospective cohort study.

Many US veterans of Afghanistan and Iraq have multiple physical and psychiatric problems. A major focus of research has been on determining the effects of mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI), but mTBI is rarely diagnosed in the absence of co-occurring conditions such as blast exposure, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, substance abuse, etc. These potentially interactive psychological and physical conditions produce complex patterns of cognitive, psychological, and physical symptoms that impede civilian reintegration and complicate efficient and effective treatment planning. Mental Health and Affect Regulation Impairment in Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD): Results from the Canadian National FASD Database.

AIMS: Individuals with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) frequently have challenges with regulating emotional arousal, or affect regulation (AR), and experience high rates of mental health disorders. This study examined children and adults with FASD to investigate the relationship between AR impairment and several mental health problems and diagnoses. METHODS: Data from the Canadian national FASD database was used for analysis. Seven mental health diagnoses, including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, conduct disorder, attachment disorder, intellec

Polygenic Risk Factors for Comorbid Diagnoses in Individuals with Substance Use Disorders: A Phenome-Wide Survival Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Persons with substance use disorders (SUD) often suffer from additional comorbidities. Researchers have explored this overlap via phenome wide association studies (PheWAS). However, PheWAS are largely cross-sectional, limiting our understanding of whether diagnoses predate development of an SUD. We characterize whether polygenic scores (PGS) are associated with time to comorbid diagnoses in electronic health records (EHR) after the first documented SUD diagnosis. METHODS: Using data from All of Us (N = 393,596), we explored: 1) whether social determinants of health (SDoH) are assoc

The impact of pre-existing anxiety on affective and cognitive processing of a Virtual Reality analogue trauma.

Dysfunctional processing of traumatic events may be in particular related to high trait anxiety as a pre-traumatic risk factor for the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, as this has rarely been investigated in prospective, experimental studies, we aimed to analyse the association between high trait anxiety and affective as well as cognitive processing of stress using a new prospective Virtual Reality analogue trauma paradigm to overcome limitations of retrospective or current analogue designs. Individuals with high and low trait anxiety (N = 80) were exposed to a mu

A year into the war: Longitudinal effects of trauma, displacement, and income loss on mental health in conflict zones.

BACKGROUND: Research has linked war-related stressors like traumatic loss, forced displacement, and income disruption to acute mental health symptoms. Little is known about how symptoms evolve longitudinally during prolonged conflict. Extending our 90-day studies, we tracked clinical symptoms and betrayal-based moral injury over one full year following the October 7, 2023, attack and ensuing war in Israel. We hypothesized stressor-exposed individuals would report persistent psychological distress and heightened betrayal perceptions one year later. METHODS: A four-wave longitudinal study follo
