BACKGROUND: Capsule endoscopy (CE) is widely used for intestinal examination; however, capsule aspiration into the airway is a serious complication that requires urgent intervention. We present a management case report and review 39 cases from 2003 to 2023, providing insights into the prevention and treatment of capsule aspiration.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 69-year-old man with chronic bronchitis and emphysema presented with 7 months of intermittent melena. After swallowing a capsule endoscope (PillCam™ SB 3), he had a brief cough and chest tightness. Imaging confirmed aspiration in the right inte

Adequate upper airway (oral, pharyngeal and laryngeal) sensation is crucial for safe and efficient swallowing and airway protection. Despite its importance, methods of upper airway sensory testing for individuals with dysphagia remain poorly defined. The aim of this study was to summarise and appraise current methods of upper airway sensory testing to inform dysphagia clinical practice and future research directions. A systematic review was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Studies that reported a method of upper airway sensory t

A dysphagia diet is a special dietary programme. The development and design of foods for dysphagia should consider both swallowing safety and food nutritional quality. In this study, we investigated the rheological properties (viscosity, thixotropy, and viscoelasticity), textural properties, and swallowing behaviour of commercially available natural, pregelatinised, acetylated, and phosphorylated maize starch and tapioca starch. The results showed that all the samples belonged to food grade 3 in the framework of the International Dysphagia Dietary Standardization Initiative (IDDSI) and exhibit

INTRODUCTION: Plastic surgeons can help to eliminate stunting by surgically treating children born with congenital craniofacial anomalies such as tongue-tie, or ankyloglossia. Releasing ankyloglossia can help to support breastfeeding and the later development of orofacial anatomy and physiology. Failure to do so can lead to growth and development difficulties in children. We report a heartbreaking case of a stunted 8 year-old female with underdiagnosed and untreated ankyloglossia.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: The patient was consulted with a short stature, speech disorder, and swallowing disorder. H

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Allgrove syndrome (AS) (AAA syndrome) is a rare autosomal recessive disease caused by mutations in the AAAS gene located on chromosome 12q13. The AAAS gene encodes for the ALADIN protein (alacrima, achalasia, adrenal insufficiency, neurologic disorder). AS can manifest with a plethora of symptoms. Early recognition of the syndrome remains challenging due to its rarity and progressive nature. This report presents an unusual case of triple-A syndrome (TAS) with concurrent neuromuscular manifestations. Understanding the atypical presentation of this syndrome is vital

Tuberculous meningitis (TBM), an advanced form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis (TB), is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection of the meninges surrounding the brain and spinal cord. If it is not promptly and effectively treated, it can result in serious inflammatory reactions and neurological problems. TBM frequently leads to joint stiffness, discomfort, respiratory difficulties, swallowing difficulties, neurological deficits, and muscular weakness. Physiotherapy intervention is essential in treating these issues, as it provides individualized treatment strategies and programs that enha

INTRODUCTION: The gag reflex is a protection mechanism that prevents food and unwanted agents from entering the lower airways. It is usually part of the physical examination of swallowing to detect oropharyngeal dysphagia, but it is a potentially ambiguous sign.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the diagnostic value of the gag reflex in patients with neurogenic oropharyngeal dysphagia and adults without it.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted an analytical observational study in patients with neurogenic oropharyngeal dysphagia (cases) and patients without dysphagia (controls). We evaluated the absence

Bulbar function in spinal muscular atrophy has been defined as the ability to meet nutritional needs by mouth while maintaining airway protection and communicate verbally. The effects of disease-modifying treatment on bulbar function are not clear. A multidisciplinary team conducted post-hoc analyses of phase 3 SPR1NT trial data to evaluate bulbar function of infants at risk for spinal muscular atrophy who received one-time gene replacement therapy (onasemnogene abeparvovec) before symptom onset. Three endpoints represented adequate bulbar function in SPR1NT: (1) absence of physiologic swallow

Dysphagia is a fatal condition after acute stroke. We established machine learning (ML) models for screening aspiration in patients with acute stroke. This retrospective study enrolled patients with acute stroke admitted to a cerebrovascular specialty hospital between January 2016 and June 2022. A videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) confirmed aspiration. We evaluated the Gugging Swallowing Screen (GUSS), an early assessment tool for dysphagia, in all patients and compared its predictive value with ML models. Following ML algorithms were applied: regularized logistic regressions (ridge, l

Background and Objectives. Swallowing and coughing reflexes are both closely associated with airway protection. Peak cough flow (PCF) is associated with dysphagia in several neurogenic diseases. In this study, we aimed to analyze the relationship between PCF and aspiration in Parkinson's disease (PD) and determine the cut-off value of PCF. Materials and Methods. We retrospectively analyzed the records of patients with PD who underwent a videofluoroscopic swallowing study and checked for PCF. A total of 219 patients were divided into an aspiration group (n = 125) and a non-aspiration group (n =

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Nutritional management of adults with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an important clinical issue. However, it is not clear which dysphagia-related factors should prompt introduction of alternative nutrition (AN). We aimed to determine which patients with DMD were introduced to AN.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 56 patients with DMD (median age, 23.5 years). They were divided into patients able to continue oral feeding (OF) and those introduced to AN. Body weight, frequency of ventilator use, daily meals, history of steroid treatment, results of videofluoro

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Maintaining total muscle mass in the older adults with swallowing difficulty (dysphagia) is important for preserving swallowing function. Increasing protein intake can help sustain lean body mass in the older adults. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of various high-protein texture-modified foods (HPTMFs) on muscle mass and perform dietary assessment in ≥ 65-yrs-old patients with dysphagia.
SUBJECTS/METHODS: Participants (n = 10) received the newly developed HPTMFs (average 595.23 ± 66.75 kcal/day of energy, 54.22 ± 6.32 g/day of protein) for 10 days. Rel

BACKGROUND: Swallowing is a complex function that can be disrupted after stroke. Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation therapy that recently has been tested to treat stroke-related dysphagia.
METHODS: The authors performed a search in the literature to review the described evidence of the use of tDCS in dysphagia after stroke. Three electronic databases were searched. The risk of bias evaluation was carried out through the RoB-2 tool. The Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations (GRADE) framework was also implemented.

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is often associated with dysphagia and esophageal dysmotility; however, only a few clinical studies on this topic have been conducted. Patients with SSc who underwent swallowing examinations and esophagography at our institution between 2010 and 2022 were included. A retrospective evaluation of the patients' backgrounds, autoantibody positivity, swallowing function, and esophageal motility was performed using medical charts. The association between dysphagia and esophageal dysmotility in patients with SSc and respective risk factors was investigated. Data were collecte

Long-term laryngotracheal complications (LTLC) after inhalation injury (II) are an under-recognized condition in patients with burns. The purpose of this study was to systematically review all available evidence on LTLC after II and identify gaps in knowledge to guide the direction of future research. A scoping review was performed to synthesize all available evidence on LTLC after II, as guided by the question, "What are the LTLC after II, in patients with or without a history of translaryngeal intubation and/or tracheostomy?". Previous studies have lacked a clear anatomical and functional definition of glossectomy for tongue cancer adjacent to or crossing the midline (TCML). The aim of this study was to provide a novel surgical approach based on anatomical unit resection surgery to treat TCML. A total of 120 patients with TCML who had undergone radical surgery were recruited retrospectively into the study. The patients who were treated with compartment surgery formed the control group; those treated with anatomical unit resection surgery formed the experimental group. The TCML was classified into cancer adjacent to

BACKGROUND: Intensive care unit (ICU)-acquired dysphagia has severe consequences for patients including increased morbidity and mortality. Standard operating procedures, however, including systematic evaluation of swallowing function and access to specialised assessment and training may be limited. Dysphagia management relies on multiprofessional collaboration, but practice is variable and nonstandardised.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to explore and compare nurses', physicians', and occupational therapists' perceptions of dysphagia management in the ICU.

Dysphagia is a common symptom of neurological disease, including multiple sclerosis (MS). The DYsphagia in MUltiple Sclerosis (DYMUS) questionnaire was developed as a screening tool for swallowing problems. The purpose of the present study was to validate the Czech version of the DYMUS questionnaire. We validated the questionnaire on a sample of 435 patients with MS and 135 healthy controls (HC) chosen by accidental sampling from larger, long-term studies conducted by the Prague MS Center. For the purposes of this study, we used both electronic (primary method of distribution) and paper-based
