Durable wall lining for malaria control in Liberia: results of a cluster randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Malaria control in Liberia depends upon universal coverage with pyrethroid-impregnated long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs). Despite regular mass distribution, LLIN coverage and usage is patchy. Pyrethroid resistance in malaria vectors may further reduce LLIN efficacy. Durable Wall Lining (DWL), a novel material treated with two non-pyrethroid class insecticides, was designed to be installed onto the surface of inner walls, and cover openings and ceiling surfaces of rural houses. OBJECTIVES: AIM: To determine the malaria control efficacy of DWL. PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: To determine

Development of molecular and antigenic-based rapid tests for the identification of African swine fever virus in different tissues.

African swine fever (ASF) is a severe haemorrhagic infectious disease affecting suids, thus representing a great economic concern. Considering the importance of the early diagnosis, rapid point of care testing (POCT) for ASF is highly demanded. In this work, we developed two strategies for the rapid onsite diagnosis of ASF, based on Lateral Flow Immunoassay (LFIA) and Recombinase Polymerase Amplification (RPA) techniques. The LFIA was a sandwich-type immunoassay exploiting a monoclonal antibody directed towards the p30 protein of the virus (Mab). The Mab was anchored onto the LFIA membrane to

Comparison of Cardiovascular Procedure Rates in Patients With Supplementary vs Basic Insurance in Switzerland.

IMPORTANCE: Switzerland's mandatory health insurance provides universal coverage, but residents can opt for supplementary private insurance for nonessential, nonvital amenities. It is debated whether people with supplementary private insurance receive overtreatment due to financial incentives. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether incidence rates of cardiovascular procedures in people with supplementary private insurance are higher than in those with basic insurance only. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A population-based weighted cohort comparative effectiveness study, using administrative claims

Managers' and providers' perspectives on barriers and facilitators for the implementation of differentiated service delivery models for HIV treatment in Mozambique: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: In 2018, Mozambique's Ministry of Health launched a guideline for a nationwide implementation of eight differentiated service delivery models to optimize HIV service delivery and achieve universal coverage of HIV care and treatment. The models were (1) Fast-track, (2) Three-month Antiretrovirals Dispensing, (3) Community Antiretroviral Therapy Groups, (4) Adherence Clubs, (5) Family-approach, and three one-stop shop models for (6) Tuberculosis, (7) Maternal and Child Health, and (8) Adolescent-friendly Health Services. This study identified drivers of implementation success and f

Comparison of visual requirements and regulations for obtaining a driving license in different European countries and some open questions on their adequacy.

We reviewed the current state of knowledge regarding visual function and its suitability as part of medical examinations for driving licenses. We focused only on Group 1 drivers. According to previous studies, visual acuity, which is the most common test, is weakly associated with a higher risk of road accidents, with a greater role of visual field. The inclusion of the visual field test in medical examinations is therefore important, but the actual limit value is still unclear and further research in specific situations is needed. Color vision impairment was not found a threat to traffic safe

Multimorbidity patterns and function among adults in low- and middle-income countries: a scoping review protocol.

BACKGROUND: A fifth of adults in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) have multimorbid conditions, which are linked to socio-economic deprivation and aging. Multimorbidity is associated with high rates of functional problems and disability, increased healthcare utilization, and lower quality of life. Literature on multimorbidity and associations with function is mostly from high-income countries (HICs) and focused among older adults. Moreover, data regarding disease patterns and their impact on person-centered outcomes are limited. There is a need for research into understanding common pat

Implementation barriers and enablers of midwifery group practice for vulnerable women: a qualitative study in a tertiary urban Australian health service.

BACKGROUND: Maternity services have limited formalised guidance on planning new services such as midwifery group practice for vulnerable women, for example women with a history of substance abuse (alcohol, tobacco and other drugs), mental health challenges, complex social issues or other vulnerability. Continuity of care through midwifery group practice is mostly restricted to women with low-risk pregnancies and is not universally available to vulnerable women, despite evidence supporting benefits of this model of care for all women. The perception that midwifery group practice for vulnerable

Umbilical Artery Cord Gas Abnormalities in the Presence of a Nuchal Cord in Term Singleton Pregnancies: A Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: The clinical significance of nuchal cord (NC) at the time of delivery is unclear. Studies have found that NC is associated with lower umbilical artery (UA) pH. Since fetal hypercarbia precedes respiratory acidosis, we hypothesize UA pCO2 is elevated in neonates with NC at the time of delivery. STUDY DESIGN: This is a secondary analysis of a prospective cohort study of women with full-term singleton pregnancies admitted in labor or for induction of labor at an institution with a universal umbilical cord gas policy. We compared patients with NC at the time of delivery to those withou
