South American camelids (SACs) have become increasingly popular as livestock and companion animals in the Midwestern United States. With increased ownership, postmortem evaluations and samples available for diagnostic assessment are being submitted more frequently to veterinary diagnostic laboratories. We searched archived pathology records at the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (WVDL) between 2009-2019 for SAC cases. BACKGROUND: Coxiella burnetii is the causative agent of Q fever which is a highly infectious zoonotic disease. C. burnetii has become one of the most important causes of abortion in livestock, which can lead to widespread abortions in these animals. There are very limited studies on the prevalence of C. burnetii infection in cases of animal abortion in Iran. OBJECTIVE: In the study, the laboratory results of 150 bovine abortion cases from 2018 (January-September) are presented.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Depending on the submitted sample material and the requested examination, serological, bacteriological and/or molecular biological investigations were performed to detect abortion-causing pathogens which need or do not need to be notified in Austria.
RESULTS: In addition to animal pathogens, the zoonotic pathogens Brucella melitensis and Salmonella Dublin were detected in 1 case each and Coxiella burnetii in 2 fetuses.

Reproductive losses in camelids are due to infertility, pregnancy loss, udder diseases and neonatal mortality caused by a variety of infectious diseases. Uterine infection and abortion represent the major complaint in camelid veterinary practice. Pleuropulmonary blastoma (PPB) is a rare biphasic tumor of children formed by mixed epithelial-and-mesenchymal elements. In this article, the authors report a pulmonary mass in an equine fetus with characteristics of PPB. A soft multicystic broad-based pleural mass was identified in the right caudal lung lobe.
