Immigrant mental health issues, especially depression in relation to discrimination and acculturation, are reported to be serious problems in the United States. The current study examines the prevalence of depressive symptoms among Korean immigrants in New York City (NYC) and its relation to self-reported discrimination and acculturation. A sample of 304 Korean immigrants residing in NYC completed a survey utilizing the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale-Korean version, Discrimination Scale, and Acculturation Stress Scale. Results indicated that 13.2% of the sample population de

INTRODUCTION: Although age of first intercourse and the emotional aspects of that experience are often a target in assessment because they are thought to contribute to later sexual functioning, research to date on how sexual debut relates to adult sexual functioning has been limited and contradictory.
AIM: The goal of this study was to explore the association between age of first intercourse and adult sexual function in a sample of Euro-Canadian and Asian Canadian university students. In addition, culture-based comparisons of sexual complaints were made to clarify the role of culture in sexua

This study examined the relationship between acculturation and peritraumatic dissociation in a sample of 304 physically injured Latino survivors of community violence. Item response theory analyses were conducted to document the measurement equivalence of English- and Spanish-language versions of a scale measuring peritraumatic dissociation. After establishing equivalence, structural equation modeling was used to determine the impact of acculturation on peritraumatic dissociation after controlling for other relevant covariates, including assault characteristics, intoxication before the assault

The aim of this study was to explore the Latino American asylum seekers' acculturation preferences in Spain and their relationship with psychosocial variables (stereotypes, emotions, quality of contact, perceived discrimination and social support), differentiating between public and private domains of the Relative Acculturation Extended Model (RAEM). Ninety-eight asylum seekers (44.9% females) answered a questionnaire. Results show that they prefer assimilation in public domains and integration in private domains, showed positive stereotypes and emotions towards Spaniards, perceived a pleasant

Although regular cervical cancer screening can prevent cervical cancer, screening utilization remains low among immigrant population including sub-Saharan African immigrants (SAIs). Acculturation is a complex process, which can lead to adoption of positive or negative health behaviors from the dominant culture. Acculturation strategies are the varying ways in which individuals seek to go about their acculturation by either maintaining or rejecting their own cultural values ip or accepting or rejecting the host culture's cultural values. Cervical cancer screening behaviors among SAI women may b

Objective: Research examining the responders of the World Trade Center terrorist attacks of 9/11 has found that Hispanic responders are at greater risk for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) than non-Hispanic White responders. However, no studies have examined how acculturation may influence the relationship between coping and PTSD in Hispanic 9/11 responders. This novel study is the first to examine differences in coping and PTSD among Hispanic responders by level of acculturation. Methods: The sample is composed of 845 Hispanic 9/11 responders who were seen at the World Trade Center Health

BACKGROUND: The process of acculturation (post-migration acquisition of host culture and/or loss of heritage culture) likely represents a key mediator of the observed post-migration decline in health that is evident among immigrant populations such as Mexican Americans. The observations that migrant health declines progressively as not only a function of length of stay in the U.S. but also across generations, and that this inter-generational decline in health is evident as early as at the time of birth itself, supports the concept of fetal programming of acculturation's effects. However, the u

The aim of this study was to examine the influence of demographic variables and the interplay between gender roles and acculturation on breast and cervical cancer screening outcomes among Vietnamese American women. Convenience sampling was used to recruit 100 Vietnamese women from the Richmond, VA, metropolitan area. Women were recruited to participate in a larger cancer screening intervention. All participants completed measures on demographic variables, gender roles, acculturation, and cancer screening variables. Findings indicated that traditional masculine gender roles were associated with

The purpose of this study is to describe the relationships among acculturation, risk behaviors, and reported physical dating violence among Cuban-American ninth grade adolescents. Participants (N=82) completed a questionnaire that assessed their level of acculturation to the U.S. (Americanism), their maintenance of the Hispanic culture (Hispanicism), binge drinking, drug use, sexual intercourse, condom use and physical dating violence victimization. Multiple logistic regression was conducted. Hispanicism was associated with a decrease in odds of reporting physical dating violence victimization

BACKGROUND: Malignancies of the lymphoid cells, including non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL), HL, and multiple myeloma, occur at much lower rates in Asians than other racial/ethnic groups in the United States. It remains unclear whether these deficits are explained by genetic or environmental factors. To better understand environmental contributions, we examined incidence patterns of lymphoid malignancies among populations characterized by ethnicity, birthplace, and residential neighborhood socioeconomic status (SES) and ethnic enclave status.
METHODS: We obtained data about all Asian patients diagn

We explored the relationship between acculturation and beliefs, attitudes, norms, and intention regarding oral contraceptive use among Korean immigrant women using acculturation and the theory of reasoned action (TRA) as the frameworks. A total of 1,494 Korean surname-based telephone numbers were sampled in New York City. One hundred forty-five Korean immigrant women completed a telephone survey. The findings support the assumption that acculturation affects intention to use oral contraceptives indirectly only through one or more of the TRA components. Acculturation could function as an antece

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular (CV) risk factors are influenced by behavioral, cultural, and social factors, suggesting that acculturation plays a significant role in the emergency and growth of chronic disease. The objective of this study was to determine the relation between CV risk factors and the main components of acculturation, in Yaquis and Tepehuanos Indians from Mexico.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional population-based study in Yaquis and Tepehuanos communities from the Yaqui Valley in Sonora and the Sierra Madre Occidental Mountains in Durango, in northwest Mexico. Acculturation stat

Acculturation/enculturation has been found to impact childhood health and obesity status. The objective of this study is to use cross-sectional data to examine the association between proxies of adult/caregiver acculturation/enculturation and child health status (Body Mass Index [BMI], waist circumference [WC], and acanthosis nigricans [AN]) in the U.S.-Affiliated Pacific Islands (USAPI), Alaska, and Hawai'i. Study participants were from the Children's Healthy Living (CHL) Program, an environmental intervention trial and obesity prevalence survey. Anthropometric data from 2-8 year olds and par

Acculturative stress is associated with negative mental health among culturally diverse individuals. Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (DHH) individuals experience acculturative stress as they navigate within and between the Hearing and Deaf communities, yet, research has not examined the relationship between deaf acculturative stress and psychological functioning. This study examined the relationships between deaf acculturative stress, well-being, and symptoms of depression and anxiety. One hundred and ten DHH adults (71.6% female, 82.7% White, median age = 30-39) completed an online survey including

The effect of acculturation on cognition was examined among 142 older Hispanics: cognitively normal [CN; n = 70], Mild Cognitive Impairment, amnestic [aMCI; n = 27], and Dementia [D; n = 45]. Acculturation levels (high vs. low) were determined using the Short Acculturation Scale for Hispanics (SASH). ANCOVAs used a wide variety of neuropsychological tests as independent variables controlling for age and education. Among CN subjects, the highly acculturated group performed better on Logical Memory delayed recall (LM-II) [F(1, 56) = 9.26, p < .001, ηp2 = 0.14], Digit Span Forward [F(1, 56) = 4.3

OBJECTIVE: many cultures have a set time of traditional rest in the postpartum period. There is limited information on how this activity may potentially increase the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). We aimed to investigate VTE risk by determining the prevalence of the cultural practice of postpartum "lying-in", quantifying activity and determining the factors that influence this tradition in women from China and the Indian subcontinent (India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) at an Australian tertiary referral hospital.
DESIGN: we surveyed a prospective cohort of 150 women aged ≥ 18 y

High expressed emotion (high EE) in family members (high levels of criticism, emotional overinvolvement, and/or hostility) has been found to be predictive of a poorer course of illness for patients with schizophrenia in many different cultures. Acculturation has also been found to relate to symptom severity and clinical course in a number of disorders (e.g., substance abuse, schizophrenia). There is reason to believe that acculturation may interact with EE, however, this relationship has yet to be examined systematically. The present study evaluated the relationship between acculturation and E

BACKGROUND: We have previously found that the level of acculturation in Chinese subjects influences reporting of depression. It is not clear to what extent such differences in reporting are a consequence of differences in the recognition of depressive symptoms. This study examined the influence of acculturation and personal depressive experience on recognition of depressive symptoms in a sample of Chinese subjects and controls in a western region.
METHOD: A 35-item Depressive Symptom Questionnaire was given to 385 Chinese subjects, grouped according to their language preference, and 143 non-C

The US Hispanic population faces rising skin cancer risks and poorer clinical outcomes, despite lower incidence rates. Acculturation, adopting elements of the dominant culture, may influence skin cancer attitudes and behaviors among Hispanics. We systematically reviewed PubMed articles from 2000 to 2023. Peer-reviewed English articles that assessed the relationship between acculturation and skin cancer in the Hispanic population were included. Andreeva et al. observed that lower acculturation levels correlated with increased use of shade and protective clothing (P < 0.05). More acculturated La
