Suppressibility of the 2f1-f2 stimulated acoustic emissions in gerbil and man.

The suppression tuning properties of the oto-acoustic distortion product emission, 2f1-f2 have been measured in the ear canal of gerbil and man. The results show the acoustic response to be suppressible in a similar, frequency-dependent manner in both species. Frequencies near to those of the stimulating tones are most effective in suppressing the response. Derived iso-suppression tuning curves have Q10dB values of between 1 and 6. Suppressor tones having frequencies near to f2 (the higher frequency stimulus) make a contribution to the tuning curve which is largely independent of the stimulus

[Acoustic stimulation and adaptation to noise of the developing mouse auditory system].

To assess the effects of an acoustically enriched environment during the auditory system development, groups of mouse pups, from two strains (Swiss Albinos Rb-3 and deafness, the latter carrying a recessive gene [dn] making homozygous dn/dn totally deaf), were exposed to pulsed pure-tone stimulation (2 500 Hz; 85 +/- 5 dB SPL) at different periods of development from conception to weaning. Growth curve, weight at 40 days, eye opening and behaviour at 24 days to the same stimulus were analyzed as a function of the mother's audition (hearing or deaf) and of the period of acoustic exposure: expos

Indication of direct acoustical cochlea stimulation in comparison to cochlear implants.

The new implantable hearing system Codacs™ was designed to close the treatment gap between active middle ear implants and cochlear implants in cases of severe-to-profound mixed hearing loss. The Codacs™ actuator is attached to conventional stapes prosthesis during the implantation and thereby provides acoustical stimulation through a stapedotomy to the cochlea. Cochlear implants (CIs) on the other hand are an established treatment option for profoundly deaf patients including mixed hearing losses that are possible candidates for the Codacs™. In this retrospective study, we compared the clinica

The sonographic evaluation of tubal patency with stimulated acoustic emission imaging.

OBJECTIVES: Experimental and clinical data suggest that insonation of echo-enhancing contrast agents with high acoustic power produces disintegration of microbubbles, resulting in a phenomenon called stimulated acoustic emission (SAE). The purpose of this study was to investigate whether SAE might be detected by transvaginal sonography and whether this technique may be useful in the assessment of tubal patency by hysterosalpingo-contrast sonography (SAE-HyCoSy). METHODS: Patients booked for X-ray hysterosalpingography (HSG) for infertility evaluation also received SAE-HyCoSy. The order of the

[The effects of mono- and bipolar stimulations of the acoustic nerve by a pulse current].

The amplitudes of the EPs during monopolar and bipolar stimulation of the acoustic nerve were analysed in the cat auditory cortex. Increasing number of trains of 0.2 and 0.5 msec duration of short (5 mu sec) electric pulses were delivered to the streptomycin-damaged cochlea. The comparison of the two types of stimulation revealed a larger dynamic range and a higher increase in the amplitude at the bipolar stimulation. The average value of the stimulation current was lower for the monopolar stimulation.

Blood-Mediated Opto-Acoustic Stimulation of Brain Cortex at Sub-millimeter Precision.

Direct modulation of neural activity with high spatiotemporal precision is a cornerstone in experimental neuroscience. Here, we present a blood-mediated optoacoustic stimulation (BOAS) approach that utilizes blood as an endogenous transducer for brain stimulation. By delivering 532-nm nanosecond pulsed laser to the cortex, we demonstrate that the absorption of hemoglobin generates sufficient acoustic pressure to trigger neuronal activity. By integrating BOAS with calcium imaging in GCaMP6f -expressing mice, localized neuronal responses were observed. Quantitative analysis reveals that BOAS pro…

Acceptance and Benefits of Electro-Acoustic Stimulation for Conventional-Length Electrode Arrays.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies have shown an advantage for electro-acoustic stimulation (EAS) in cochlear implant (CI) patients with residual hearing, but the degree of benefit can vary. The objective was to explore which factors relate to performance with and acceptance of EAS for CI users with conventional-length electrodes. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted for adults with an average threshold of 75 dB hearing loss or better across 250 and 500 Hz preoperatively (n = 83). All patients underwent cochlear implantation with a conventional-length electrode. Low-frequency audiometri…

Prenatal features of Pena-Shokeir sequence with atypical response to acoustic stimulation.

A fetal sonographic screening examination performed at 23 weeks showed polyhydramnios, micrognathia, fixed postures of all long bones, but no movement and no breathing. The fetus showed fetal heart rate acceleration but no movement when acoustic stimulation was applied with artificial larynx. All these findings persisted on serial examinations. The neonate was stillborn at 37 weeks and a final diagnosis of Pena-Shokeir sequence was made. In addition to typical sonographic features of Pena-Shokeir sequence, fetal heart rate accelerations with no movement in response to acoustic stimulation sugg…

Effect of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation on auditory function following acoustic trauma.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is one form of non-invasive brain stimulation and increasingly shows neuroprotection in multiple neurological disorders. However, the potential of rTMS for protective action on auditory function following acoustic trauma has not been investigated. Here, we examined effect of TMS on hearing conservation, neurons survival and brain-derived neurotrophin factor (BDNF) expression in the cochlea and auditory cortex following acoustic trauma in rats. Wistar rats were exposed to intense pure tone noise (10 kHz, 120 dB SPL for 2 h) followed by rTMS tr

Acoustic, mechanical and galvanic stimulation modes elicit ocular vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials.

OBJECTIVE: This study compared the characteristic parameters of ocular vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (oVEMPs) elicited by the air-conducted sound (ACS) and bone-conducted vibration (BCV) stimulation modes as well as the galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) mode. DESIGN: Fifteen healthy subjects underwent oVEMP tests using ACS (127 dBSPL), BCV (142dB force level), and GVS (5mA) modes. The response rate, latencies of nI and pI, nI-pI interval and amplitude were measured for each mode and compared among modes. RESULTS: All 15 healthy subjects (30 ears) had 100% response rates in both B

Sensitivity to interaural time differences with combined cochlear implant and acoustic stimulation.

The interaural time difference (ITD) is an important cue to localize sound sources. Sensitivity to ITD was measured in eight users of a cochlear implant (CI) in the one ear and a hearing aid (HA) in the other severely impaired ear. The stimulus consisted of an electric pulse train of 100 pps and an acoustic filtered click train. Just-noticeable differences (JNDs) in ITD were measured using a lateralization paradigm. Four subjects exhibited median JNDs in ITD of 156, 341, 254, and 91 mus; the other subjects could not lateralize the stimuli consistently. Only the subjects who could lateralize ha

Fetal death from sepsis following a reassuring intrapartum fetal acoustic stimulation test.

An intrapartum fetal death within 20 minutes of a reassuring acoustically stimulated fetal heart rate acceleration is reported. The cause of death in this instance was congenital pneumonia, gram-negative sepsis, and meconium aspiration. Umbilical cord pH values obtained at delivery did not demonstrate asphyxia (ie, low pO2, high pCO2, and low pH), but suggested a metabolic acidosis typical of sepsis.

No change in the acoustic reflex threshold and auditory brainstem response following short-term acoustic stimulation in normal hearing adults.

Unilateral auditory deprivation or stimulation can induce changes in loudness and modify the sound level required to elicit the acoustic reflex. This has been explained in terms of a change in neural response, or gain, for a given sound level. However, it is unclear if these changes are driven by the asymmetry in auditory input or if they will also occur following bilateral changes in auditory input. The present study used a cross-over trial of unilateral and bilateral amplification to investigate changes in the acoustic reflex thresholds (ARTs) and the auditory brainstem response (ABR) in nor

[Direct acoustic cochlear stimulation for therapy of severe to profound mixed hearing loss: Codacs™ Direct Acoustic Cochlear Implant System].

OBJECTIVE: Implantable hearing aids have become a valid option for the therapy of various forms of hearing loss. The Codacs™ Direct Acoustic Cochlear Implant System is the first vibratory implant available for patients with severe to profound mixed hearing loss (MHL). By directly coupling sound energy into the perilymph, a very high maximum power output (MPO) is achieved over a broad frequency range. Via a conventional stapedotomy, the vibratory energy of the electromagnetic actuator is transferred directly to the perilymph through the oval window. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This article describes
